well, first we'll need to bring one of the numbers to 10, so to do that we need to add 8. since we add 8 to one, we must subtract 8 from /1
the other 2, turning it into a -6. so now we have to figure 10-6, and we get 4. OH YEA THIS IS SO MUCH easier than when I was in school :/
quite frankly, I think it's bizarre. this common core method can be useful for large quantities though. like multiplying 64 by 32 to 2048
RandomMagus
49 * 9 = (50-1)*(10-1) = 500 - 10 - 50 + 1 = 451. It's just disguised high school math, but good for mental math. Worth knowing

they teach it that way. I did also show her a simpler way and told her to do it CC first and check her work with the other method
grumpy173
US 38th in math the old way. Countries that implemented common core have seen significant improvement. But you're an expert, right?

If you think its because of the way its taught you are much dumber than your comments smugness portrays.
And if you think that the way its taught does not play a role, then you're as dumb as your comment portrays
qaaaaa
Nope. It's just a different approach than we all learned. It's much more effective, but has a steeper learning curve. Kids learn easier >
angrygardener
Good luck, you're talking sense to a bunch of band wagoneers who've never spoken to a good teacher in their lives.
Though, but the problem is a lot of teachers don't really understand it. The whole CC system is flawed though.
rememberthatonetimeyeahmeneither
There’s also the matter of teaching what is developmentally appropriate. The approach has to be comprehensible not just learning the steps.

HollyRex
Not even close.

there is no Common Core math. CC is a set of desired results, nowhere anywhere in the CC agreements does it specify HOW math is taught.
This is my answer every time I hear “common core math.” Common Core is a set of standards for EVERY subject.
ISupportYourViews
Thank you for this.
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
Yep, these strange methods we're seeing is the result of trying to reach more kids and get em all to learn (to pass cc standards) some 1/ 2
are insane, but most are actually really good, and aid heavily in mental math, understanding the solution rather than memorizing process 2/2
tryingtofallasleep
Thank you!! It’s the idiot publishers who should be pulled through the mud, not the CC.
Actually, the new methods are actually design to reach more kids (get more kids passing) they just aren't all great methods, but a lot are!
I don’t argue that. I’m just tired of seeing parents post these horrendously worded worksheets and declaring that the CC is BS.
As a teacher- thank you for this!!! I'm tired of non teachers telling me what BS CC is without understanding this.
I see it on Facebook so much, and I'm constantly battling with those morons about how their kid will be better at math cause of the methds.
011011100110111101101110011000010110110101100101
Just because you think it's nonsense doesn't mean it's nonsense, it makes doing math in your head much faster.
It's fucking retarded. Designed by beuracratic retards to ensure kids fail. WTF is wrong with 2+2=4? Why complicate the fuck out of it??
KScarey
CC was actually put together by teachers and bc so many states got on board the gov got on board too- not bureacratic
As far as I know, 2+2 is and always will be 4.... it’s designed to help calculate bigger numbers mentally and to understand the process more
Haha, I see so many inept parents on Facebook talking just like you, and they just sound like pathetic morons, just like you.
NurseyMcNursepants
Yes, they totally want the kids to fail. Because...........
noyouratowel
Why?
SeriouslyAwkward
They have retarded questions like "you have 5 bananas how do you get 2 bannas" and any answer that isn't what they taught is wrong
orangecicle
American education is about learning how to fall in line and obey. That's it.
Basically many adults don't understand common core and it makes them feel dumb. Therefore they think it's bad.
There's 3 or 4 different ways to do everything. Kid learned 4 different ways to multiply and divide last year and this year cant remember it
Look pal, CC math isn't Microshaft Winblows, OK?!
I learned multiple ways to multiply and divide in elementary school, way before common core. Teaching kids only 1 is retarded.
HorribleWifey
Common core is garbage.
MrPredator
Agree wholeheartedly on that one. Definitely some fucked up bullshit.
TheNotoriousMastermindLeBones
I made my kids learn both. They're fucking amazing at math now. Common core is good shit once you get it.

Things you don't understand aren't always garbage. The theory of the way cc teaches math may not be how you learned, but it is sound.
I understand it- I have a secondary edu Degree.
TritonPontus
What exactly does it teach? Not exactly with the times. (In high school) didn’t attend American elementary school.
pokebug666
For the longest time I thought CC simply meant "math, reading, etc". Are you saying it also encompasses a different _way_ of teaching?
CC is about how kids think. E.g. in math, what used to be memorization (times tables, etc) is now about the meaning of numbers themselves.
Like you can learn calculus formulas but it doesn't mean much if you don't understand the
It's not once you actually understand what they're doing. The main problem is the adults didn't learn it so they don't understand.
There's actually how I do math in my head anyway so I'm cool with it.
That's partly the idea! Common core tries to teach intuitive ways to think about numbers, and how to understand what you're actually doing 1
when you solve problems! The old way was just rote "do this thing because I dunno I guess it works out if you do." Now everyone's mad 2/
manofthewild07
Thank you! The only people who dislike it are older people. Kids don't know the difference!
Well, to be fair there IS another problem: sometimes the teachers don't really understand it, so they don't teach it very well. Then the 1/
kids don't like or get it because they aren't being taught properly. But this is to be expected when you're changing how the country 2/

well, first we'll need to bring one of the numbers to 10, so to do that we need to add 8. since we add 8 to one, we must subtract 8 from /1
tyr888
the other 2, turning it into a -6. so now we have to figure 10-6, and we get 4. OH YEA THIS IS SO MUCH easier than when I was in school :/
tyr888
quite frankly, I think it's bizarre. this common core method can be useful for large quantities though. like multiplying 64 by 32 to 2048
RandomMagus
49 * 9 = (50-1)*(10-1) = 500 - 10 - 50 + 1 = 451. It's just disguised high school math, but good for mental math. Worth knowing
tyr888
I would have done 49 X 10, and then subtract a 49 to get to the 441 (that you meant to put)

Its driving me nuts, esp as a homeschooling mom. I'm having to learn USELESS formulas.

My friend is a 5th grade math teacher and she's having to figure it out too. We were trying to figure it out together so she could grade hw.
WhySoSirius
I helped a girl I nannied with her common core HW and it took me a while to understand, but once she walked me through it I could see why
WhySoSirius
they teach it that way. I did also show her a simpler way and told her to do it CC first and check her work with the other method
grumpy173
US 38th in math the old way. Countries that implemented common core have seen significant improvement. But you're an expert, right?
Dionysus187
If you think its because of the way its taught you are much dumber than your comments smugness portrays.
grumpy173
And if you think that the way its taught does not play a role, then you're as dumb as your comment portrays
qaaaaa
Nope. It's just a different approach than we all learned. It's much more effective, but has a steeper learning curve. Kids learn easier >
angrygardener
Good luck, you're talking sense to a bunch of band wagoneers who've never spoken to a good teacher in their lives.
qaaaaa
Though, but the problem is a lot of teachers don't really understand it. The whole CC system is flawed though.
rememberthatonetimeyeahmeneither
There’s also the matter of teaching what is developmentally appropriate. The approach has to be comprehensible not just learning the steps.
wearywanderer
People underestimate what kids are developmentally capable of
notacreeper
I'm an engineer and have taken through calc 4 and common core takes me a minute to figure out. It's ridiculous

Common core is objectivly better. Dont knock change just because you cant understand it. You sound like my grandpa.
damangus
"If you have 3 oranges and Janiqua has 2 bananas, how many grapes does Marco have?" <-- CC math
HollyRex
Not even close.
Delathi
there is no Common Core math. CC is a set of desired results, nowhere anywhere in the CC agreements does it specify HOW math is taught.
dinosaurinsweatpants
This is my answer every time I hear “common core math.” Common Core is a set of standards for EVERY subject.
ISupportYourViews
Thank you for this.
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
Yep, these strange methods we're seeing is the result of trying to reach more kids and get em all to learn (to pass cc standards) some 1/ 2
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
are insane, but most are actually really good, and aid heavily in mental math, understanding the solution rather than memorizing process 2/2
tryingtofallasleep
Thank you!! It’s the idiot publishers who should be pulled through the mud, not the CC.
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
Actually, the new methods are actually design to reach more kids (get more kids passing) they just aren't all great methods, but a lot are!
tryingtofallasleep
I don’t argue that. I’m just tired of seeing parents post these horrendously worded worksheets and declaring that the CC is BS.
HollyRex
As a teacher- thank you for this!!! I'm tired of non teachers telling me what BS CC is without understanding this.
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
I see it on Facebook so much, and I'm constantly battling with those morons about how their kid will be better at math cause of the methds.
011011100110111101101110011000010110110101100101
Just because you think it's nonsense doesn't mean it's nonsense, it makes doing math in your head much faster.
damangus
It's fucking retarded. Designed by beuracratic retards to ensure kids fail. WTF is wrong with 2+2=4? Why complicate the fuck out of it??
KScarey
CC was actually put together by teachers and bc so many states got on board the gov got on board too- not bureacratic
dinosaurinsweatpants
As far as I know, 2+2 is and always will be 4.... it’s designed to help calculate bigger numbers mentally and to understand the process more
OnlyPostSoUsersXray
Haha, I see so many inept parents on Facebook talking just like you, and they just sound like pathetic morons, just like you.
NurseyMcNursepants
Yes, they totally want the kids to fail. Because...........
noyouratowel
Why?
SeriouslyAwkward
They have retarded questions like "you have 5 bananas how do you get 2 bannas" and any answer that isn't what they taught is wrong
orangecicle
American education is about learning how to fall in line and obey. That's it.
doctopussy
Basically many adults don't understand common core and it makes them feel dumb. Therefore they think it's bad.
Totallyscrewedinaustin
There's 3 or 4 different ways to do everything. Kid learned 4 different ways to multiply and divide last year and this year cant remember it
damangus
Look pal, CC math isn't Microshaft Winblows, OK?!
noyouratowel
I learned multiple ways to multiply and divide in elementary school, way before common core. Teaching kids only 1 is retarded.
HorribleWifey
Common core is garbage.
MrPredator
Agree wholeheartedly on that one. Definitely some fucked up bullshit.
TheNotoriousMastermindLeBones
I made my kids learn both. They're fucking amazing at math now. Common core is good shit once you get it.
Wombatish
A lot of it is new, untested curricula, not Common Core specifically. Common Core is standards, not /exact/ methods. Source: *link in reply*

Things you don't understand aren't always garbage. The theory of the way cc teaches math may not be how you learned, but it is sound.
HorribleWifey
I understand it- I have a secondary edu Degree.
TritonPontus
What exactly does it teach? Not exactly with the times. (In high school) didn’t attend American elementary school.
pokebug666
For the longest time I thought CC simply meant "math, reading, etc". Are you saying it also encompasses a different _way_ of teaching?
doctopussy
CC is about how kids think. E.g. in math, what used to be memorization (times tables, etc) is now about the meaning of numbers themselves.
doctopussy
Like you can learn calculus formulas but it doesn't mean much if you don't understand the

It's not once you actually understand what they're doing. The main problem is the adults didn't learn it so they don't understand.
NurseyMcNursepants
There's actually how I do math in my head anyway so I'm cool with it.
alsoAzrael
That's partly the idea! Common core tries to teach intuitive ways to think about numbers, and how to understand what you're actually doing 1

when you solve problems! The old way was just rote "do this thing because I dunno I guess it works out if you do." Now everyone's mad 2/

I'm an engineer and i love it. Its teaching what I learned in college to kids in elementary school. Maybe more kids will like math now :)

well the math is not garbage but saying that is the only correct way to do things is indeed garbage
Koshunae
It isnt that theyre teaching it as the only way, its that it takes so damn long to explain that they cant teach them any other way.
