Well, it explains why the title is "Random dump", certainly!

That might just be BuzzFeed tbh

Some websites do this on their own, and the screenshots in question all appear to be from the same site.

Ah I think BuzzFeed is in fact geared this way

#4 Important to note: amputation of the *children*. They left the workers intact to extract maximum labor. They would cut off hands and feet of their kids to keep them properly motivated.

It is just because everything is kept so clean around it. The smooth line transition of the floor and such. You'd expect to see gravel spill over and mess up the lines. It is a very clean establishment.

#31 Except US Republicans.
They’d tell the family to fuck right off, especially if they were on Medicaid.
PackedCatMeowingPowerDensity
Na, they are more insidious than that. They will all swap for it too, and then tell the family "what a pointless waste of time" this was because they cannot pay for the 300k inflated procedure.

#4 Leopold felt that he should have a colony, like so many other European powers. At the Berlin Conference of 1884, where European powers were dividing African territories, he presented himself as a humanitarian interested in "civilizing" and "Christianizing" the Congo region. It was the last part of Africa to be colonized, due to its remoteness and difficult terrain. Once he had the go-ahead (didn't need to worry about getting invaded), Leopold annexed the entire, huge, area for himself. 1)
NinjaCongo
That is, he didn't make the Congo a Belgian colony, but his private property. He then imposed brutal quotas on local populations to deliver goods, mainly rubber and ivory. Those who didn't meet their quotas were mutilated by having their hands cut off. If a worker was too valuable to have his hands cut off, their children's hands would be cut off instead. These were far from the only atrocities committed under his barbarous rule. He only ruled the Congo for 23 years. 2)
NinjaCongo
During this short time, it is estimated that the population of the country was halved. Figures are very hazy as there was little documentation, but estimates run from 1 to 15 million dead, directly or indirectly resulting from his rule. He was eventually forced to cede control of the Congo to Belgium, which continued to exploit the country. Leopold was never brought to justice for the atrocities. To this day there are numerous avenues, squares and monuments worldwide named after him. 3)

#1. Serious question. Is this still true? They also recently elected a far right wing dipshit
UnacceptableLemons
Yes. There is no antivax movement here besides the usual Facebook research idiots. Antivaxers and antiscience movements in general have no meaningful traction, and science has not been used for culture wars here.
UnacceptableLemons
Adding to my other comment, as imgur doesn't allow edits, the rightwing dipshits currently in power did defund many institutions, including education and research ones, but it is the usual right wing thing, not antiscience as you see it today in Canada's basement meth lab.
discorage
#25 that's some bullshit, but if you're in a relationship, the man should get a vasectomy. It's an outpatient procedure. A woman getting sterilized is highly invasive. Men who refuse to get vasectomies are fucking babies.

#9 Four. Humans can do this too. I know, because I can.
DeepSpaceNetwork
Can you feel a battery (e.g. AA) that is just sitting around? The presence of animals/people? The power cables in the wall?
ThatOtherGirlYouKnow
I can't feel a battery, no flowing electricity. And it needs to be specific to set up the right magnetic field to make my skin and tongue and mucus membranes tingle, and the air has to be dry enough. 230V/50hz AC is easy, 120V/60hz AC is hardly anything.
DeepSpaceNetwork
That's just side effects of high voltage *electric* (not magnetic) field, I think everybody can feel that. Mostly from the field moving body hair. Animals evolved sensitivity to electric fields specifically to detect other animals, so they're very sensitive and don't need high voltage...
mothmam
Yes I wondered about that.

#2 unfortunately at least 2 of those were not caused by actual usage of the helmets, and the lower right picture is literally meant to show a cutaway view of the helmet and was clearly done on a level belt sander.

#7 The oldest platypus fossil is 63 million years old.
The oldest duck-billed duck-like fossil is 69 million years old.
It is, indeed, a "duck-billed platypus", sorry.
whatexactlyisthefunctionofarubberduck
Good name
thebonesofmyancestors
Hmmm. I did some digging and I find much different information. The Anatidae family (i.e. ducks, geese, etc) only has fossils going back about 35 million years. Whereas the oldest of the platypus family (monotremes) is the Patagorhynchus pascuali, which was duck-billed) and they go back about 70 million years.
ThingsThatDontJustifyGenocide
Also, the almostduck I was refering to: "The bones in the top and the back of the head closely resemble those of modern ducks, whereas the face and beak have unfused bones, as seen in today's chickens and turkeys. "You can play this game all day: ‘Oh, it's a duck! No, it's a chicken!'" Field says.", to quote an article about it.
Duck-like, but not platypus-beaked, thus, my mistake. :)
ThingsThatDontJustifyGenocide
I cede this point to you, friend, my digging didn't go deep enough. T'was not a duck-billed critter, just duck-like in form, it seems.
My bad, thank you for being more accurate. ♥
Jamesstin
The dog fight one is a bunch of shit. A fucking broom stick? A water hose? None of that shit is going to work. What id suggest doing if two dogs are fighting especially if it's you and another person is get the other person on the same page. If they're not doing what you're doing. It won't work as well. Anyhow, you grab the dogs by the back legs and just pull a little bit. Eventually the dogs will try to bite down again to get a better grip(the so called "lock jaw" bullshit people claim..) 1/
Jamesstin
If you're both pulling the dogs legs as they reposition their bite; they will eventually lose grip of whatever they're biting. Dogs have thick skin so they're not going to nearly the damage they will to a person. If one of the dogs is smaller than the other. It's wise to be aware that if the bigger dog starts shaking, they can kill the other dog pretty easily. I've stopped this with my foot while still yanking on the dogs legs. One thing I will say is to don't even try to hit the dog with your2
Jamesstin
Fists. You might be able to fuck a dog up with a kick to the ribs but believe me. You are not going to do shit by hitting a dog in the head unless you're intending to kill it with something that can actually cause brain trauma(that won't be your fists.) also there's a fair chance that the other person is going to get exhausted while trying to help you esp if it takes a bit to coordinate. I'd just try telling them to hold on while you keep pulling. But yeah once you yank the dogs apart they 3/
DeepSpaceNetwork
Does this mean that a strong kick at a dog's head won't do much? Some people can break massive doors by kicking...
Jamesstin
I mean kicking in the throat or lower jaw would fuck em up but you're not gonna cause a pain response or easily knock them out or whatever by hitting em with your fists. Just I've personally never seen someone kick or punch dog thats already biting and had that stop them biting. It's why the whole lock jaw myth is so pervasive. You. Couple it with the fact that the dog is attacking you, or your dog or your kid that you don't also want to hurt? It's just not going to work how ya think it will
DeepSpaceNetwork
I see, well punching a dog didn't even occur to me... If it came to actually fight a dog I guess I'd try to kick its head as hard as I could. Ideally before it could actually bite. Obviously fighting as a last resort. I wonder how effective throwing things is, e.g. a well aimed rock.
Jamesstin
Usually will stop fighting. They usually just try to bite each other and clamp on so the trick is getting them to release at a similar time but if they don't just keep pulling until the dog repositions its bite again. Unfortunately I've done this method dozens of times with all kinds of aggressive ass dogs and it's by far the most effective I've seen. If the dog bites a person. It'll work too but again, if they shake their heads, them back teeth will tear the skin really bad so you got to
Jamesstin
Prevent the shark mood crap while simultaneously pulling from the back legs. If they try to turn around to bite you, just keep stepping backwards while pulling their legs with you(you know like a wheel barrow. Lol)

#6 is this really true ?
I can’t imagine the time difference is that significant in a room ..
At the other extreme .. if I’m outside in a storm .. there’s definitely a delay between lighting and thunder… as expected.
What about if you record it and then play back the video .. is your Brain still time shifting the audio at all times ? What if you slow it down or speed up the recording ?
DaveTheScientist
Yep, it is true, but your brain even takes it a step further. After the brain fully processes all of the signals (which does take a few milliseconds) it guesses what has happened in that time, and tells your conscious brain that is what is currently happening. So what you perceive as happening NOW is actually a projection based on slightly old data. It is wild how many ways your brain messes with sensory information.
whatexactlyisthefunctionofarubberduck
Your name makes sense
DaveTheScientist
Why thank you. I do enjoy diving deep into the absurdity of biology!
quasisentience
This. There are obvious examples where you see an explosion and then hear it with delay.
honeybadgersRus
While seemingly insignificant. The brain can still determine the differences.
Sound travels at about 1,100fps (feet per second)
Light travels about 300,000,000fps
So the light that's coming out of your television is traveling at that big number and the sound coming out of the speaker that's going into your ears is going at that low number.
It doesn't matter if it's video in real life or anything, ironically it's all real life but that's another topic.
DarkUranium
It's a big part of spatial hearing. The shape of the ear has a large contribution too, but not quite as much as the time difference.
honeybadgersRus
Fun fact, if you're on a walk and want to figure out the elevation of a bird you hear? Tilt your head sideways and this hidden superpower will show itself. The time difference is only microseconds but you'll be able to "hear"the approximate elevation of the bird. It's a surreal feeling actually.
whatexactlyisthefunctionofarubberduck
As in how high up it is?
honeybadgersRus
Yes, like you'll be able to hear the approximate height, just like you can tell the approximate direction when your head is oriented upright.
