On a tiny scale, my employer just informed us that we are switching insurers effective 7/1. Any deductibles paid to Old Insurer are null & new deductibles with New Insurer will start then. And only one of the two hospital systems in town is covered, so if you go to the Wrong One, you either need a new doctor or you pay them yourself. The whole system is rigged against us.

The people who designed the system do not care whether sick folks get better or die. Regardless of whether or not their service is effective, they will always have more customers. For them, you running out of money and dieing due to not being able to afford it is of no consequence. It's worse than corpo greed. It's medical corpo greed.

In the US, even people with insurance can go broke. I had a cadillac plan and still got a $200K hospital bill when my twins were born. It took a couple years to get Blue Cross to pay it. They repeatedly rejected every bill as a duplicate charge and forced us to explain on every line item that the reason it looked like a duplicate is because it was for twins. Just a fucking disgusting attempt to exhaust us. Mangione the whole fucking thing to the ground!

Republican policies have historically delivered tax cuts to those earning above ~$230K and up, and burden those more who are making less. The move is to get you to vote against ones own self-interest by saying it's about taking your guns or that there's a gay or Foreigner in your neighborhood a single mother of six getting free food and having abortions. I had an MRI last month. The "facility fee" alone cost me $1300. That's AFTER insurance. I had to set up a payment plan for it and then a second bill came for the test itself and the fees for the doctors.

Aussie here, my cancer pills are $5000 per month. I pay $25 and the government pays the balance. Yes, people do pay private health insurance but low income people do not. Full family cover is about $5000 per year no matter how many kids you have. If you are unemployed then you pay nothing but if you need a non urgent operation you will need to wait. I am glad I wasn't born in the USA.

If it is a non urgent operation or doctor visit you will wait in the US too. It takes between 6 months to 1 year for most specialists.

Yep, trying to get on the list for a kidney transplant, 6 months to see a cardiologist so they can look at an EKG that has been looked at and say 'Looks good, get on the list'. I could of gotten in sooner but it has to be theirs, which costs me double what it costs me by going to my local cardiologist...

What many in the US don't realize is the bargaining power of social health care. Our health insurances are on a fixed budget and will mercilessly haggle prices with pharma companies f.ex. That whole bloated industry overcharging for every little thing doesn't exist. A person with diabetes costs the german insurances 600€ a year, including meds, doctors' visits, supplies, lab tests, etc. With a copay of 5-10€ per prescription for the patient. The same can easily cost $600 a month in the US.

Traditional medicare works just fine. And people could get private supplemental insurance for a reasonable rate that would cover the 20% that Medicare didn’t until the Republican Congress decided that that plan just encouraged people to use healthcare services and stopped it. My mom pays $180 a month for her supplement plan and won’t see a doctor, hospital or medical durable equipment bill as long as she can afford that. And her doctors get paid a reasonable rate. Medicare part C is hot garbage.

to be fair; its not obvious to me why someone who has a million dollars wouldnt pay a good share of his own care. The real issue is inequality, the issue of who should pay for which calamities as long as doing so doesnt increase inequality is kinda separate. Or more to the point, in an equal system bottom half would have about 30K more a year, you COULD tax the 15K and only give 15K, or even some hybrid...anyway healthcare costs are a symptom, not the disease. the disease is nequality

The original plan for both CHIP (childhood insurance program) and Medicare was to start at the two age extremes and then expand coverage to everyone once the kinks had been worked out. We don’t want Medicaid - we want Medicare - aka single payer healthcare funded at the federal (as opposed to the state) level so that the same program follows you no matter where you live. And we want Medicare because it pays for a lot more, at a higher rate, and has greater quality metrics than Medicaid.

Yep, the general premise of insurance is to spread the risk and costs across all policies. It's how homes are rebuilt after a fire or tornado. It's how people have $100k SUV's and trucks are totaled and replaced. It's how hundreds of acres of crops are damaged in a hail storm are covered and not bankrupt the farmers into losing their land.
