I recall he got a bit of criticism in the early days of GoT because he was being too funny for the kinda of show it was supposed to be, but fans loved it so they kinda leaned into it. Dunno if it's factually true though, can't find the source anymore

Every "serious series" needs at least one light-hearted character for contrast. It gives the viewer context and the occasional breather from the melancholy after seeing your third favorite character in a row die.

One of my all-time favorite tension breakers in a movie was in "Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou." It involves a big spoiler though, so if you haven't seen it, don't read my following comment.

As a Wes Anderson movie, there's always dry humor, but this was subdued. There's a scene when Zissou's son drowns, and it brings every character down in a sobering moment, deflating a battle that'd been going on between two ships that'd been harassing each other. After the death, the rival crew and captain are on board the enemy boat, quiet and humbled, and the captain suddenly looks over and asks, "Is that my coffee pot?" It's so direct and petty in the silliest way. I love it.
