All my kids moved back at some time. One was planned two were emergency movebacks. We never asked for how long or tried to chase them out, they were our kids we are a family. My parents asked me when am I moving out on my 18th birthday.
I’m 46, my dad is 79. He always makes me feel safe and comforted like this and I cherish it so much. I’m so terribly sorry that a lot of you guys haven’t experienced this. Breaks my heart.
OK this is the second time I see this posted and the first time I genuinely thought it was actually from OP's dad and now I'm mad for falling for it. m(
My kids will always be welcome at my house. They didn’t consent to be born, my wife and i chose that for them. They owe us nothing. We owe them everything.
I had the safety net of a family & house to go to but parents that did not help me with anything b/c they decided that I was smart and did not need their help with anything, ever. Amazing what that can do to your head.
My daughter attended a super prestigious culinary school and now bounces around the country, and some day the world, working as a chef. She can do it knowing worst case scenario, I wire her money for a hotel while I come get her. When I was her age, I had already been kicked out of my mom's house, which she lost because she depended on me to pay her mortgage. Be who you needed.
My dad told me I could come home and the day I was on the way (with his knowledge) he told me I couldn’t stay with him. I couch surfed for 1.5 years while my ex stalked me. I wish I were ever loved like this, I’d have made it a bit further in life.
I'm sorry to hear that. I went through some of your posts - you're a supremely talented artist. I am impressed by the level of dedication and skill you have developed.
I left teaching after the 2020 school year. I did some virtual work and got laid off when my wife was 3 months pregnant. I couldn’t find a job for 4 months and felt worthless. I heard so much growing up how unemployment is awful and terrible people collect it. I was very low. My conservative dad told me this is what unemployment was for and that I shouldn’t feel shame, and that he had to collect it before. It made me feel better but couldn’t undo all the negative feelings. It gets better though!
My mom is considering me moving back in at 45. And not forever, just a step to getting a place in town. Problem is im 1100 miles away, not Problem is nothings holding me here except having the funds to move. Which I can muster, but economically things arent looking very good. Probably better move before gas hits 6 bucks nation wide
i ve never understood the fact that your son parents can let You be homeless, in México most families are like this dad, most parents would love for their kids to keep.living with them as long as possible, You guys are broken up there
Our mindset of every person becoming independent and not needing help can create some very special people. Truly shining diamonds, formed under intense pressure. But usually all it does is poison our minds and make us run ourselves to exhaustion instead of just asking for help.
Ah Boomer parents, but they were good with…….uh, they really nice about, uh……they instilled a healthy , um….. They bought us really cool shit in the 80s when they had more money than sense.

now THAT"S ... how you parent.

I'm very much looking forward to being this kinda dad.
Growing up, I never realized that all I REALLY wanted was to be a dad. And now I am. And it rocks.

My kid is 19 and being a dad is absolutely awesome. I will be anyone's dad, and everyone's..

Man. The things I could've tried if I had had a safety net. Probably wouldn't have been homeless at 16.

Im jealous that you had a car to live in

Looking back, a tent would have been easier.

this has a depressing amount of upvotes that, I'd bet, are a lot of people essentially saying 'same'

Viscouse
Same. I'm proud of myself for not perpetuating that cycle with my kids.

Woof, sounds like my dad. I always wanted to be in a well functioning family hahahaaaa.. haa

criticalmassdriver
Your dad has spoken to you? Mine hasn't even acknowledged my existence even after court orders and DNA testing.
LadyCritCat
This isn’t competition, you don’t need to one up me
criticalmassdriver
Who wasn't trying to one up you. I was trying to do that thing from the bar scene in Deadpool.
RSRjarredallen
Wanna bet! My Dad wasn't even there when I was conceived!!! So There! Top that!
Autittuderp
I'm sorry your dad didn't know how to be one. You deserved better.
BananaForScaIe
My dad did, now he's forgotten and has become a hateful MAGA (Canadian).
Autittuderp
Maple MAGAs are the worst...I'm sorry that he fell down the well. ((((Hugs))))
BananaForScaIe
And I'm deeply sorry yours wasn't there. I didn't mean to compare, sorry. Uncool banana, uncool.
Autittuderp
Not at all. This isn't about comparison...it's about sharing commonalities.
LadyCritCat
Thanks. He could have been a lot worse, but he could be a lot better too.
ScientificPanda
My dad has this kind of poem on his fridge that basically says, anyone can be a dad but not anyone can be a father.
Villosopher
My dad got mad at me once because I (jokingly) addressed him as "father", saying, in essence "There is only one Father". We don't talk anymore.

You are correct. I was able to see the paper again. Not really a poem but here
Corbinator78
"Father" is a condition of circumstance. "Dad" is a title you have to earn. And keep earning.
LadyCritCat
Right, that was my thought
