Nobody ever thought that. It was a joke made by physicists who KNEW the explanation was that small, mobile wings work very differently than large fixed ones, but also knew they didn't have the mathematical tools to model the former.

They absolutely did, because you can just apply propeller equations to the bumblebee's wings and it works out fine. There may have been jokes that it seemed implausible, but at no point between the wright brothers and today were we ever able to correctly calculate the performance of a propeller aircraft and *not* know how a bee flies.

Most of the “flat earth” posts I see on Facebook (I know, I know) are from accounts that get paid by interaction, so they are just rage baiting to get responses and it works for them. They spew out the same “arguments” over and over again with ai images and they just laugh at the people that are literally paying them to keep it up.

NCLB at least had some logic behind it. "We want to make sure schools at least cover the basics, so the more students who score below XYZ on standardized tests the less money the school gets" is at least a coherent, actual plan. (Disregard the fact that "teaching to the test" was always going to be the obvious outcome. I said it was a coherent plan, not a good one)

I have had this conversation.... explaining that every individual drop of the ocean is being pulled toward the planet's center of mass... and if you are not at the surface, all the water above you is pushing you down... if you are at the surface, a lot of the water is evaporating into vapor

Nope.... liquids conform to the shape of their container, they have waveforms and currents and cannot be considered uniform in any way.... they must be considered individually when discussing how they are affected by gravity...
Just like water droplets in thunderclouds, each individual, microscopic water droplet has so much surface area relative to their weight, they easily float on gentle updrafts in clouds

He thinks that gravity pulls on each object roughly the same when he thinks about it abstractly, but he also understands that some things are heavier than others. I'm sure if you tried to explain the relationship between weight and the pull of gravity he would get confused.

I had a bloke, who was a teacher in game design, that argued that all items had the same terminal velocity. Was pretty sure that was incorrect; yes this works in non-atmospheric environments, but not in a fluid atmosphere like Earth's (atmosphere is fluidic). Wish I'd had the presence of mind at the time to ask "So what the fuck does a parachute do". Learned from that one.
