In a move that could have been forseen by literally anyone who thought for a few seconds, farmers are realizing that their near-to-slave gravy train is going to end.
Personally, I am cynical and suspect we'll be hearing about the bold new plan to force convicts into farming and just fully lean into modern day slavery in America.
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-mass-deportation-farmers-1987371
xmaneds
@GreyEyes1973 said this, "And instead of farmers hiring immigrants directly, the for profit prisons will charge the farmers for the labor instead. The immigrants just become slave labor and hiring illegals is no longer illegal. Sure it'll cost a bit more but they won't have to worry about ICE raids or big fines for undocumenteds on job sites."
lbargomancer
I think it's more likely the detained "migrants" will be slaved out to their former employers, so the only issue for the farmers is moral.
technofiend
I feel a certain amount of empathy: it's going to be tough for those farmers, but I feel zero sympathy for them. They lit this barn on fire and closed themselves in it and here we are.
sumthinsumthinsumthin
Well, this is what they overwhelmingly voted for.
300Hectares1TankofKerosene
No fucking shit sherlocks. I get that there is a severe problem with right-wing propaganda disguising itself as news as well as social media echo chambers, but holy shit, we’ve got some unbelievably stupid mf’s in this country.
whitegirlcanteven
The GOP and especially the Christian Right have been going after and eroding education for a LONGGGGGG time. They wanted this, and it is part of a very long game and it has been a long term goal. Stupid people = Republican voters.

My wife commented on all of the house construction lately, everyone getting the work done early before it's near impossible later.
ElvisCatStello
Oh yeah as someone that's worked construction. You're about to see a huge drop in construction workers and a sky rocket in the price tag. The Mexican workers, work harder, longer, and are very efficient. Now you'll have to over pay by a lot, to train workers and most will quit anyway. Simply, cause no money in the world allows some people to tolerate 95 degree days on a roof, or the constant pain of your body on weekdays and the weekends, and not wanting to go outside during free time.
ElvisCatStello
I know you and your wife obviously know this, but for a lot of people this will be a helluva revelation. And it's not just me. A lot of contractors complain about how no matter how much they offer they can't find people. And other states have tried prison workers too do farm labor as well. They just want to be outside the yard they don't work that hard cause we'll the job sucks and .50 cents an hour
Euchre
Farmers are held up as so pure, wholesome patriots - while 'exporting' jobs within our borders by hiring unauthorized workers and paying them sub-legal wages. This isn't the first time farmers have panicked because of the threat of workers being deported in large numbers. The solution suggested back then? Using inmates. This was the middle 2000s.
BlindGardener
I mean, fuck, he did the EXACT SAME GODDAMN THING LAST TIME HE WAS ELECTED.

skipweasel
I suspect a lot of countries might refuse to take US produce if it's too slavey.
Serenitis
Tbf, a lot of countries already refuse to take US produce because it's too uncontrolled, so that might not have a huge impact.
skipweasel
True - but given how the US is probably going to annoy a lot of people in the next few years it'll be a handy reason, on top of no shortage of other resaons.
skwint
You're going to have to eat everything you produce to avoid starving if this all truly goes tits up.

That's not true, have you considered that they will destroy mass quantities of food to create a scarcity to drive up food? Bc they will.

I understand how important farming is to society but coming from the Central Valley in CA, farmers are some of the biggest, most selfish, entitled pieces of shit the area has ever produced.
Iblamemyparentstoo
trump has a plan to replace the Mexicans he's planning to deport, those will be the "black jobs" now he was referring to.
samanthadlcruz
he plans to hold a sh%$@# ton of immigrants in his private prison detention facilities while they await their forced deportation... that will be another part of his massive slave labor population
AfroSamuraiJack
Iirc in P2025 it says anyone without a job can be put into forced labor, so I would assume not only the continuation of prison slave labor but also welfare recipients are going to be targeted.

It's always puzzled me how republicans can claim to be pro business. I mean sure the choices they make benefit businesses in other countries, and multi national businesses, but that's all.
They are resoundingly anti business because the jobs market is increasingly complex, requires increasingly high levels of education and high levels of education equal more liberal views as a rule.
Does he really think Tesla and SpaceX will stay in America if they can't get American employees who are 1/
FrancsTireur
Qualified?, you can't offset those kinds of things with tax breaks, at a certain point high tech business will turn around and say thanks for all the breaks Don but I can't employ vegetables to launch my rockets or wire my electric cars circuitry; I'm off to India.
And what does he imagine that if he gets rid of all the high tech jobs the low tech jobs will come flooding back? That's not how economics work.
And the thing is I think he knows that, I think the entire republican party knows 2/
FrancsTireur
That and their plan isn't to be protectionist and drive out immigrants etc; it's to allow their buddies to create ever larger monopolies and give them giant kickbacks for letting them. 3
DrMephistoFromSouthParkColorado
and also I'm imaging the counter tariffs other countries will use in retaliation will impact them as well. Corn and soybeans are big exports
thundercactus
Hope everyone can get used to having a big hot cup of high fructose corn syrup in the morning.
The701
And it'll cost $19/oz because some hedge fund will have bought all of the corn producers in the US after all federal and judicial power to regulate monopolies gets wiped out.
300Hectares1TankofKerosene
Dont forget the retaliation tariffs imposed by whoever imports our products. Those will cause foreign consumers to buy from other countries. Just like they did the first time Trump did this. Thats why massive government assistance was given to farmers.

Well, then the common human should get a higher wage... oh, wait, that's socialism, can't have that in the US of Ass. Guess a lot more people will starve or end up in prison.
trippingthelightfantastic
and the prisoners will be sent to the fields, to work for free
CaldariBob
The prisoners won't see any of the money, but they won't be working for free...
lukebpc
That has potential to make inflation skyrocket and weaken the dollar to it's lowest point in ages.
OhIfIMust

Yeah I know the choices sucked this year, it was between puppies for everyone and diarrhea forever and I just didn’t feel like Harris gave enough details on what kind of puppies that would be, and I’ve had diarrhea before and so that somehow seemed more familiar and comfortable.
dynamojoe
Cheap labor gets deported, making food more expensive, farmers complain they can’t make ends meet, the Farm Bill gets bigger, farms consolidate further, and eventually private prisons will loan out their food-riot prisoners to corporate farms so that BigAg can meet their quarterly projections. May the leopards feast.
TavasetTarli
I had a flash of intuition today that told me this was exactly the plan. Stop and Frisk will become the norm again, which will balloon the prison population, which will be used as labor on farms, further enriching the prison industry.

Rfk jr wants to have drug addicts go "wellness centers" which he describes as working on farms with access to zero technology while also receiving a reeducation program. He also clarified this applies to anyone on anxiety/depression meds or adhd meds too.

The sheer volume of panicked Finding Out has been both astounding and exasperating of late, _and the motherfucker isn't even in office yet._
Blackfinity
Many of the anecdotes I've seen have been social media posts about so-and-so working for company Z blah blah boss won't be able to give raises blah blah tariffs. IOW, many are likely apocryphal drivel written by people that want to see that stuff happen.
Hexrowe
Sure, there's a lot of that, but I was specifically thinking of news items like this.
BDBottom
Musk even promised an economic collapse, but it would be better afterward.
Yeah, when a Democrat gets elected (if there are any future elections) to once again fix a Republican mess.
whitegirlcanteven
We need to stop with the "if we have elections" stuff. Stop obeying in advance. This was not a landslide & people are going to fight back. We NEED to fight back. They can't take what is not easily given, and we need to stop assuming they can and will. The majority is SLIM, don't let them fucking forget it, and we fight and we take that shit back. Hold them accountable for EVERY. SINGLE. BULLSHIT. THING. It's going to be horrible, but we shouldn't lay down & let them have ANYTHING via assumption.
TanithRosenbaum
The thing is, it completely puzzles me. The panicked finding out seemed to start the day after the election. Literally the day after the election. Who is stupid enough to vote for something and then look it up AFTER the election? (I mean, apparently roughly 70 million americans, but it still boggles my mind)
OverthinkingThis
There's a very simple explanation. The second Trump was declared the winner he switched from promising to delivering, so NOW the chucklefucks are looking into how he can deliver and finding out those nice little details that make up reality.
Aka they wanted to see Trump win more than actually improving anything for anyone.

They voted for racism and sexism and homophobia and thought that all this talk about tariffs, social security and stuff they don't understand was just dog whistles because he can't speak openly what they think. They didn't think any of it would be actually followed through.
corndude101
Oh no, don’t let them fool you. They knew it would be followed through, but the one issue they agree with is what matters to them.
Republicans notoriously vote on a single issue. To them, the other stuff is worth it if they get their way in the one category that matters to them.
beeeeeeerkaaaaa
All I can do is laugh and think "fuckem" .
corndude101
Yea, except it’s going to affect other people like me and you, so by saying “fuck em” you’re really saying it to yourself.
You’re going to be the one that’s paying for those tariffs and the labor increases.
archery126
I'm in the "fuck em" mindset too. Yes it's obviously going to affect me, but he was elected and I can't change that. I voted, I donated, I tried to convince people, and now I'm done. I'm out of energy, I'm out of fucks to give, and I'm just going to do my best to insulate myself and the people I love from this disaster as much as I can. And I'll sit back and laugh at the people who voted for the leopards while their faces are being eaten, cuz that's all I can do now.

I hate what Trump and MAGA turned me into. I have gradually seen myself go from an optimistic idealist certain that most people are good and kind and just need a bit of empathy shown to them for their own to shine back, to a jaded cynic who's now trying his best simply to find some humor in the slow motion implosion of the country and society he loved. I do hope they get exactly what they voted for, and I hope they get more than their fair share of the pain it'll cause people.
