I wish some of those early athletes who thought their triple was incredible were alive to see this. They'd be so delighted and amazed to see what they started.
#1 this sport is so funny. It's like going out with a skateboard and doing a beautiful interpretive dance but then winning gold because you popped a fat triple kickflip.
What a fucking athlete my jaw is dropped. He gets more intense at the end like no biggie I'm just going to wrap up with some more huge jumps and flawless technical work. As Elle Woods says What like it's hard?
The sustaining of energy to do that... is absolutely remarkable. He manages to recover so much in the gliding moments between flips, twists, and quads... just unreal. To keep up that precision, because if you weaken, it's so easy to slip. Very narrow path to keep it clean.
Very biggie, really. He put in an inordinate amount of work to get good enough to make it look like it was easy. And sure, for him, it might be, but only because he practiced a *lot* to get there.
And to be very honest, that performance was extremely difficult, because he is doing more things that need skill, strength, stamina, speed and flexibility with an incredible amount of mental focus that I don't know of vitually any other sport that is comparable.
Did this motherfucker just casually throw in a fuckin BACKFLIP?!? What?! Insane levels of athleticism on display. Dude is fuckin graceful, it’s beautiful to see.
They are now allowed after a few skaters started doing them despite the penalty and were loved by the audience. You can beat the system (that's a joke sadly).
How the fuck do you even practice doing backflips wearing fucking ice skates?? Learning how to stick the landing must take an insane amount of practice
Holy shit! Does anyone else remember when the first quad was performed and how amazing it was? Was in the 90s, right? I keep thinking I vaguely remember seeing it on the Olympics, or something.... like when Travis P. did the first triple back-flip on his motocross bike at the Xgames!
I remember it very well! There were news segments and scientific explanations about how his body was ideal for the spins and whatnot. It was a huge deal that people couldn't wrap their heads around.
Pastrana did a double backflip, never a triple. I still remember Mad Mikes first ever backflip. Tony Hawk 900 on skateboard, JP Walker double cork on snowboard,
As a very old but proud Canadian, I remember seeing Kurt Browning do the first quad in competition - I think it was the World Championships, but it was forever ago
That was surely a feat but I remember he tried like a dozen times or more before he landed it. It wasn't part of the competition. Am I remembering that wrong?
He's got a sort of Gozer the Gozerian/Edward Scissorhands type thing going on, and I'll be damned if he isn't a nimble little minx about it. Aright you kids take care ima rub one out and watch three or four movies now.
awholelotofnothin
It's an anime. Don't you see the kanji?
Moxmox
7 quads you say....is that per channel though? because the TK-421 can totally do that!

This must be Jimmy MacElroy's son. John Heder played his father in the documentary Blades Of Glory starring Will Ferrell.
pollypocketfullofposies
You GOTTA think that the hair is intentional lol. The cut and the feathering are 100% Jimmy.
QuazMasta
Am I misremembering, or just old? I recall flips being against the rules in competition. Only for the fun routines.
DoIEvenLyftBro
They were banned for quite a while in competitions for safety reasons, yeah
Groose
Now THATS how you finish

Brian Boitano would clap

Oof. Just stone-faced and pissed off the entire time. What is the point deduction for an existential crisis?
LittlePinkAnimal
I'm experiencing an inward struggle between finding this all very impressive and being annoyed at the sheer level of pretentiousness.

Zhreca
Btw he is training quintuples now.
BuckDitkis
It's called optimization. Eventually there will be a slayer that does infinite quads.

On a scale from 1-10 how dizzy are you?
Yes

Wait I thought we all hated ICE right now?

Vecna on ice

Now I've played a lot of video games in my time, and those aren't even double-jumps, let alone quads.
ZeldaShotFirst
When you put enough points in the right skill tree, you get a perk that gives you x4 twirlydoos per umph
awholelotofnothin
You have to count the turns in the slow-mo.
dasklaus
It was a joke about "double-jump" in video games meaning you jump off thin air in a second arc during the first, rather than rotations.
ruint
it depends how you spin it

Time for 5…

Woa, i do not understand much about ice skating, but that was breathtaking, he made physics his bitch

Performing insane levels of athleticism while sparkle-fabulous is doubly impressive.

I don’t follow competitive ice skating, but weren’t backflips not allowed? Or is it a different type I’m thinking of.
Zhreca
They are now allowed after a few skaters started doing them despite the penalty and were loved by the audience. You can beat the system (that's a joke sadly).

Baha that was my reaction! "Oh and Back flip just for the hell of it? That's impressive!"

I'm old enough to remember when the triple was a game over winner.
CaptainHyperbole
I remember the first backflip and the first double backflip. After the first backflip literally anything less than that was just mid.
NotSomoneElse68
I thought flips were illegal?

Rules were changed in 2024.

Didnt he also nail a 720 still at 40? I know he pulled off something at 40+...

Tony Hawk and Andy McDonald in the XGames (when it was really good) is some of coolest stuff ive ever seen.

Ilia's a figure skating thoroughbred. Both his parents are Olympian singles skaters and his mother was especially known for her jumping.
