Speaking from decades of firsthand experience dealing with toxic people: it doesn't work. Otherwise we wouldn't be in this mess, because people would have realized they needed to vote monsters like these out generations ago.
All this is is people wanting a zero effort "solution" that makes them feel like they did something to help, but without actually doing anything remotely helpful. It is ultimately a self-destructive strategy because it just enables evil people to do more evil.

The only thing toxic people respond to is consequences. They view everyone other than themselves as sub-human, so they don't give a shit how their actions make you feel. They revel in making others suffer because it makes themselves feel powerful. The only time they stop is if they are facing immediate consequences that would severely inconvenience them (prison, losing their job, business failing due to boycott, etc). And even then they will only stop for as long as that threat hangs over them.

I think you underestimate the number of people who have next to no memory when it comes to what they know about any given candidate. Not to mention the number of people who will let go of 1 or 2 things they dislike about a candidate if there's other things they think would benefit them.
