Frankenstein was a goalie? Cool.

One of the first NHL goalies to wear a mask painted lines on it where pucks had hit it to show where he'd have been cut open and had stitches without the mask. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_Cheevers#Mask

Yet they were ridiculise when they started wearing masks…

I remember the era, and the later one when helmets became mandatory for new players but old pros could still skip them. Maskless goalies didn't mock goalies who put on a mask. It was old-timers and fans, mostly the fans.

Remember in the 80s before neck guards, when that goalie (iirc) got his throat slit and almost bled out of the ice, because somebody slid towards him skates first, while he was diving forward to get the puck? Terrifying

"In 1966, Life Magazine had a make-up artist apply stitches and scars to Sawchuk's face to demonstrate all of the injuries his face sustained over the years. The make-up artist did not have enough room for everything"

Did he never get hit on his left side?

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If he's a righty he might have consistently blocked with his right arm, turning his left side towards the goal?

Damn this makeup looks better than what Marvel and Netflix gave us for S2 of The Punisher

I raise you Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadians. The first NHL goalie to wear a mask.

Well when a 6oz frozen rubber puck is traveling at highway speeds, unless you're a lunatic, like us, you get out of the way.

Yeah, a pair of hockey skates are the mystic portal thru which the national animosity and all round rage we normally store in geese gets channelled back into a human host.

Can't forget Jacques Plante either

To be clear, this is a makeup job composite of all the injuries he received over the course of his career. https://time.com/3878486/terry-sawchuk-a-face-only-a-hockey-puck-could-love/

I didn't even open the link. I read "a face only a hockey puck could love" and I lost it. 😂 😂

TL;DR the caption on the photo: Goalie Terry Sawchuk sports fake scars and wounds applied by a make-up artist to simulate injuries accumulated in 16 years of professional hockey, 1966.Ralph Morse—Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images

I mean I get your point, but he still took all those shots and damageto the face, even though it was not all at once.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yeah, but posting the image without the context that he is wearing makeup to hyperbolize the point, by making it seem like his face was like that on a regular basis, is misleading and a callout is merited.

Yeah, like I said, I get the point.

The Japanese realized many years ago that the face mask was essential. In kendo, taking a hit with a bamboo rod to the face is very unpleasant.

So, who was in net the last time the Leafs won the cup?

Fuckin...Ghengis Khan. (Idk it was so long ago.)

The Weakerthans did a spoken piece called Elegy for Gump Worsley and the final bit goes,"If anyone asks, the inscription should read, 'My face was my mask.'"

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's called being Canadian...

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

The men still have only half of a face protection while women and juniors have a full cage around their faces. And it shows ... in terms of teeth.

This looks malicious.

Still nothing on "Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann famously played the final 17 minutes of the 1956 FA Cup Final with a broken neck."

They didn't have helmets or masks. What a crazy sport.

As a kid I was at a live AHL game and the maskless goalie got struck in the forehead by a slapshot. There was SO much blood. I think that was my introduction to live carnage.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be serious for a moment. It was a different time for the sport as well. Shots rarely left the ice, standup goaltending was the norm because of that, stick technology wasn't anywhere as sophisticated, results in much slower shots and on and on and on. You still gotta be a crazy bastard to play goalie. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I loved being a goalie ( not for hockey though, can't skate worth a damn) but for football and handball.

Loved being the last line of defence but i gotta tell you getting a fast ball hit your leg or arm stung HARD sometimes!

And apparently they used scythes instead of sticks.

Sid chopped a guy's finger off through his glove. They we're always scythes

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante is the first player to consistently wear a mask. Here’s a Canadian Heritage Minute about it. For you non Canadians, these were short tv commercials that we used to air about historical moments in our country.

My university bar had trivia nights on Wednesdays. Every year they would do heritage minutes as one of the themes and you had to get there super early to get a table. It was always the best one.

When I was a child I saw a Spiderman + Punisher comic where the villain was a man with his face full of deep scars and almost no hair. His name: The Saw or something similar.

Have you ever seen a shin snap so one's heel touches their back of the knee? Fucking cunt.

Oh you poor thing. Did I upset the poooor little baby for making fun of football players who dive and fake injury constantly. Grow up.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Context you fucking chimp. 99.9% of soccer "injuries" are guys going down holding their face when a gentle breeze wafts over their ankle.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have actually. It was in wrestling, where competitors don’t fall over trying to draw a foul because they’re little shits.
