The police are allowed to lie to you. Lying to the police is a crime. Anything you say can be used against you in court; it cannot be used to help you as it would be hearsay.

That's not a valid objection per the Rules of Evidence. I know the judge basically told him to sit down and it's unnecessary, but it would have been nice for the defense attorney to call him out on breaking the rules in open court.

I think there was a case where the guy said, “I want a lawyer, dawg” and the cops kept questioning him and the court found that he didn’t explicitly state that he was exercising his 5th amendment and requested a lawyer, etc. I think there were “Lawyer Dog” memes after that.

police lie during interrogations to extract false confessions all the time, dragging it out over hours and hours and hours until you're totally mentally worn down. This is especially effective, and egregious, when done to people with mental disabilities. Police should not be legally allowed to brow beat someone into believing he had killed his father (who was very much alive) [as one example, among the uncountable myriad]

Defense counsel is making sure that the jury knows that cops can lie. Prosecution just gave the defense a gift by getting up and making a big deal about "Yeah, our side can lie, so what?"

As can be seen in the rest of the video, there is no jury. This is an argument for the finding of PC & identification. The Judge ruled the state can continue, but shouldn't because the state cannot prove it BARD, because there is PC. This is a mere preliminary examination (timestamp 9:25 of the full video) - required in Michigan courts for felony prosecution. Source: I am a prosecutor (not in MI, tho)

Correct. This is a defense strategy known as "ringing the bell." Even if your statements are shot down, in a jury trial you can influence their perception by giving information in the form of asking a question, you can't un-ring a bell, and the Jury can't un-hear anything you say.

no.. it's not.. his objection was overruled, he was allowed to ask the question.. and aside from the judge being completely biased to the police to the point where he'd sustain this obviously groundless objection (not entirely unlikely) there was no reason for defense to expect that this question would be asked, but not allowed to be answered
