You're right! It does increase wear on the tires. Properly cambered wheels are usually barely perceptible and their main purpose is to improve grip on corners, generally when you want as much grip as possible. I think usually you only want around 2-5 degrees if I remember right.

Adding some (up to maybe three dregrees) negative camber can increase grip in corners but more tacky that can reduce braking effectiveness. It will wear out tyres a lot quicker. Only really useful for fast road or track geometry.

As a mechanic and someone who deals with performance cars, it really is just dumb in every conceivable way. The handling gets extremely jittery and awkward due to reducing the contact patch of the tire to that of a motorcycle. You have extreme material stress due to absurd load angles on parts that are vital for your and everyone elses safety in traffic.
It's as dumb as those trucks running extremely thick spacers and end up shearing wheel bolts.

Interpretation of the US CAFE rules has led to massive vehicles because that means they do not have to be as fuel efficient as smaller vehicles. And since competitors were making larger vehicles that were selling, other manufacturers jumped on that bandwagon (also taking advantage of said CAFE rule interpretation).
Some manufacturers are bringing back some tactile buttons thankfully, but yes, not enough.

That's not where this came from. "Stance" culture is the result of people with zero mechanical knowledge lowering their cars with cheap coil over kits in the early 2000s. The result was them fucking up their camber. People thought it looked cool and started doing it intentionally and that's when it took off. Like a lot of the mods on street cars, i.e. putting a touring wing on a fwd sedan for example, it's a performance loss and looks dumb.

I live near a canyon OHV and see lifted trucks regularly going up on weekends. These aren't the RGB Chrome trucks you see on freeways, many are even trailered up there since their tires are too big for street use.

The thing is, if you take it off road you'll want a bit of a lift to fit larger tires,. but mostly adding better suspension components than stock, once you go so high the returns diminish and the truck is worse off road than a stock truck. Don't get me started on "off road" trucks with giant deep dish wheels and small sidewall tires.
