I actually liked the new robocop for a couple of reasons but my favourite scene is when they show him how much of him is actually left and booooy is it some good body horror
So, Peter Weller's Robocop Suit was notoriously difficult to move in for the Original Series. To the point where he had to come up with a completely new way of moving around in it to not get heatstroke and fatigue during filming. It really gives a sense of this is a dude whose mostly a robot that you just can't get with CGI. . .
I hated the new Robocop because it entirely missed the point.
Original Robocop was a merciless satire of end-stage capitalism. OCP was corrupt as fuck.
New Robocop is just bland speculative sci-fi. OCP is a legal, reasonable corporation trying to manufacture consent but is otherwise operating within the bounds of the law. They're not ideal, but are not actually the bad guys.
Uh, what? They are quite literally the bad guys. Legal front yes, but not reasonable nor moral. What they do to Murphy's brain is explicitly illegal in the movie. And it's all to get to sell their products in the US and make more money. The film isn't good, but if you think it's not a critic of late-stage capitalism, you haven't watched it.
Watched the old classic Robocop last year, it is still so good. I think I might have seen the new one once but I don't for the life of me remember anything about it.
The remake had potential due to the source material, but the execs and minds behind it just completely missed the purpose / point of the original, and wound up making a generic action flick instead.
I was actually watching a video made by a seamstress about how costumes and cgi have gotten worse over time in movies. Specifically historic costumes, but there was some touch on modern stuff too. I honestly never thought about it much, other than "mweh this move kinda sucks", but it makes more sense now.
She made a very good point that a lot of the stuff these days looks too clean and the materials are a lot cheaper. That and movies get pushed out super fast these days. kinda sucky.
There's a scene in the original where they're building Robocop, and you see through Murphy's perspective they're talking about being able to save his left arm, and Bob Morton is like "We talked about this. Total body prosthesis. Lose the arm." And I wonder if the remake was trying to pay homage to that scene, and just sucked at it.
It just made no sense at all. Let's leave the one part of his body that manipulates his weapons entirely unarmored. At least have him wear a gauntlet in combat or something.
I'd heard that it was an entirely-too-on-the-nose commentary about drone warfare — that "at the end of it, there's always a human hand pulling the trigger". No, I'm not joking.
It reflects the militarization of the police force. The image on the left looks like something that might actually defend you. The image on the right looks like something that would serve a no-knock warrant, shoot your dog, shoot three people not on the warrant, realize it doesn't even have the right address, and then deport you to El Salvador using shittily photoshopped pictures as proof you were a criminal all along.
The biggest problem for the remake. PG-13 with a studio stooge on set to make sure that is what they filmed. You cannot do the social commentary and action of the original with just a PG-13. The original had to have cuts to go from an X to an R, Robocop was Pre NC-17 as that rating came about due to the porn industry becoming so strongly linked to X.
Yeah, I was going to comment that. The director wanted something far grittier and closer to the original, wanting to comment on the automation of fascism, but the execs cut everything.
Rico will be deported to El Salvador for not being white enough, and Dizzy will fall in love with a fat old bald man with an ugly spray tan. But he will break up with her, choosing instead the blonde white spaceship pilot "Ivanka"
The original idea by the director was to make something far closer to the original with lots of gore and social commentary, but he was vetoed by the execs.
Am I the only one who sees the original Robocop's cartoonishly over the top villains as what today would pass as the smartest and most capable of today's offering of CEOs, Billionaires and Republican politicians?... these assholes are one white cat and handlebar mustache rubbing cliche away from being Snidely Whiplash.
What used to be considered satire has now become reality due to the fact that at some point the people in power realized they had enough of it to take the mask off.
Old Robocop: Campy 80s action, timely warning about cartoonishly evil CEOs, corporations and greedy scummy politicians.... New Robocop: Desperately trying to cash in on the appeal of an older popular movie without putting in the work.
Yeah campy, but man younger me (probably too young at the time to have seen that movie) was really haunted by how the ED209 gunned down that guy as a failed live test...
In a recent documentary, the shot guy was covered with squibs, one went off over his balls, he winced in agony but stayed in character. It was part of the “too gory” frames restored in the Director’s Cut.
The best part about that scene is they filmed it, then went to lunch, had spaghetti. And the director wanted the shoot to be more gruesome, so they reshot it and put the leftover spaghetti into it so it would look meatier. And that's the shot that made it into the movie.
I thought it was about the incoming Murderbot series ?!? The books are quite good, so I hope the series is too, but it's gonna be hard to translate to movie because it's very introspective (and autistic...)
once I saw it was PG-13, I refused. I simple refused. Robocop is either R or not at all. in related news fuck PG-13 as the corporate beige slop empty suit bullshit mass market appeal make us the most money by being spineless and bland movie rating it is.
Oof... That was a thing?... I was too old for Saturday morning cartoons at that point, so I guess that's why I never heard of it... Well, not too old for The Tick, but that fellow citizen, is another story best saved for another time... Spoooon!
Jesus...I was watching that and thinking, "I just saw this on DVD a month ago, I don't remember it playing out like this. What cut of the film is this?" then I saw that it was a fan remake of that scene.

That remake gets a bad rap.

It’s almost impressive how much they misunderstood RoboCop. Really egregious. Makes me very angry. Tryin to be chill about it

I give it a pass for using Hocus Pocus by Focus. My Father-in-law loved that song and it’s one of my favourite memories of him.

I liked it. I get the criticism. It wasn't a super good movie. But I enjoyed it for what it was.

Now tell us about Murderbot

I just finished the game. It was pretty meh. It was fun to explode punks, and you get an achievement for shooting a guy in the dick.
Monkeynutsjoe
Did you get the achievement for shooting a grenade in mid air?
Davedavedavedavedave
I got them all, so probably.
Ree81
Perfect example of studio execs going "Nahhhhh let's not make this famously R rated movie into a new R rated movie".
JanglesPrime
I'm hoping someday it will get a new treatment and do it right like they did Dredd.
Sidewaysgts
The remake had potential due to the source material, but the execs and minds behind it just completely missed the purpose / point of the original, and wound up making a generic action flick instead.
Monkeynutsjoe
Well of course the execs missed the point, how could they ever conceive that they were the bad guys in the original?

Sucks too because i could feel commentary on automated and semi automated combat platforms just itching to get out.
icantbelieveistillhavetoprotestthiscrap
That reboot completely missed the point of the original on all counts. So many bad decisions.
Idontcareatall62

That makes so much sense. It had the taint of executive meddling all over it.
onlyawfulnamesleft
And you could see the remains of what the director wanted in the movie. Like some lungs and a hand only. There was nothing left!
graehall
"Never let me see myself like that again" was a powerful line from the new Robocop

Genuine nightmare fuel.

Agreed. That scene hit me hard and *stayed* with me. It's worth watching the movie just for that IMO

And the ED201 killing kids in the intro, even if it was done in a quick obscured cut.

Blows my mind they failed that hard with such a good cast
AyatollahBahloni
So, business as usual then.

Ironic, really. They took a movie where the ultimate villain was capitalism and cynically tried to cash in on nostalgia by making a bad remake.
