Most Imgurians who resent this fall into this category

You realize us in the first world are a part of that 10%, right? We need not only right the rich, but capitalism itself.

To be clear, the 10% global wealthiest people would be the top 800 million. That covers much of Europe and the US.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I just want to point out to my fellow Americans, the wealthiest 10% of the world does include billionaires, unfortunately it includes every single one of us as well.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Negative Ghost Rider. More than half of American's make less then 45K a year. And not one of them are included. And while people who make probably up to 100K a year are doing more on average they are not a hair on a rat's nutsack compared to the multimillionaires and billionaires. So while there is some truth to American's and Europeans and such having a much larger population that is guilty its not even close to all.

Compost the rich

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

World's richest 10%? So basically everyone in all western countries?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Just checking but... Y'all realize that the top 10% globally means anyone making around 45k USD per year or more? You definitely know or are people included in this stat. Yes, eat the rich, but this stat will be abused.

Though the 1% are the biggest driver behind the 10% wasting a ton of energy. They dictate that everyone has to commune to work every day, and they're the ones that write the laws that make fossil fuels the most affordable option for heating or power generation. They're also the ones running a ton of propaganda to keep the overconsumption of everything going.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Propaganda for overconsumption ??? That's not really a thing. People would acquire new stuff anytime they can afford it... You don't need propaganda for that. Just observe people during black Friday

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

What do you think is the point of advertising and phrasing every ad like not having the newest and shiniest thing is a personal failing? Do you think black Friday would be such a deal of it weren't hyped up like it's the bste deals ever and if you miss them you're a failure? It's all designed to exploit insecurities and foster a social attitude that makes bullying people for not being able to afford the latest and greatest feel acceptable and the right thing to do.

The point is to convince you buying brand A instead of brand B. I don't know anyone who feel bad about the climate before buying a new shirt, a new phone or a new coffee machin

Actually an easy problem to solve, French dude figured it out a long time ago. Gilligan I think his name was. Guillermo, something like that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

The solution was like mankind's third or so invention. It's called a club. Every development since then has just made it fancier.

Guillaume O. Teen, I believe.

Ghillie Suit Ovaltine. But he had a nick-name, so they shortened it a little bit. It's on the tip of my tongue. Dang, I lost my train of thought.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He hasn't published anything since the 70s, though. People are forgetting about his research.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it was actually Antoine Louis, Tobias Schmidt, and their team who figured it out. Guillotine was the person who proposed to the government that they needed a newer, more human execution method.

To be in richest 10% globally is way less rich than you would initially think... Does not change things about billionaires being a cancer, but something to think about still.

2 weeks ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Yeah I wonder what the average annual income would be to put you in the “richest 10% on Earth”

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It seems like the top 10% of the US requires about $2M in net worth. I didn't look further for what it requires globally since I definitely don't meet that, lol.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

The thing is, there are *a lot* of comparatively impoverished Asians and Africans. My wife and I, Americans, teeter on the line between upper working class and lower middle class last I checked, but that likely puts us well ahead of the average Chinese or Indian, which together compromise about 40% of the global population.

Yeah I'm broke af, but I'm American-broke, where I have an old used car I hope doesn't need parts this payday and I had to patch a window with a sheet of plexi cause it was cheaper than glass.

I'm not 'survive on 27 cents a day' broke and watching children in my village starve for the crime of being born to the wrong group. I've got a house, a car, a job, I'm *rich as fuck* on the world stage. *THAT* is the sad part.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it's nowhere near as much as you'd think. For those interested, apparently global top 10% of wealth requires about $175,000 in combined assets. Top 10% global income would be about $30,000 according to this following tool: https://alltools.dev/reference/finance/global-wealth-percentiles

2 weeks ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Thing to keep in mind is that it’s not a straight line increase.

2/3 of the damage may be caused by the top ten percent but zoomed into I’d bet the curve looks similar with more than half of that 2/3 caused by the top 2% with a good chunk of the damage by the other 8% caused more by passive action (like owning a car) while virtually all of the major decisions (like purposefully stifling the development of renewable energy infrastructure) being made & driven by the top 0.5-1%.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That doesn’t excuse the bottom layers of the global top 10% but it’s essential to understand that they/we are NOT generally “on the same team” as the 1%.

They/we are the buffer they maintain to keep space from the folks desperate enough to “eat the rich”.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's basically everyone in the first world, lol

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

And theres the rub. The figures almost entirely come from the fact that almost all fossil fuel shares are held by the top 10% (either directly or in pension funds), and its oil powering our way of life.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes.. we are causing global warming

Feels better to blame the rich...

We are the rich.

I'm sure this sourceless rage bait TikTok means exactly what you think it means, and is not a tortured out-of-context statistic.

It's probably Elon setting his mansion to 78 degrees in the winter, and not American businesses importing a never-ending supply of junk for the American consumer.

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Hey dumbass, who SELLS that junk to Americans, after monopolizing the economy to prevent them from buying anything else?

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Here's the article they're referencing https://iiasa.ac.at/news/may-2025/worlds-wealthiest-10-caused-two-thirds-of-global-warming-since-1990 the study they're referencing being included in the article. TL;DR: Excess meat consumption compared to poorer countries, larger and thus less efficient cars, and the desire to take a plane instead of train (especially private jets) are some of the biggest contributors. Especially people like swift and musk using private jets for 15 minute travels are bad.

Something something the top 10% globally is people who make $122k a year or more, not exclusively billionaires, blah blah...

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Wealth vs income. The study is referencing wealth. Someone earning that $122k you referenced could be a fresh graduate that's $400k in debt, or could be a multi-multi-multi millionaire retired hedge fund manager who sits on a board four times a year.

Also, the threshold for the 90th percentile of global annual income is about $47k USD, not $122k.

As the study references wealth, the threshold at question is individual net worth greater than ~$200k or so.

Great point!

But with no source beyond talking puppets, we have no idea what methodologies were used.
