This seems like a terrible move for multiple reasons. Just fortunate it worked out THIS time. The first and obvious one being the gun could've went off anyway and got himself or someone else shot. There's also the second guy who could've been armed too.
Remember folks. Heroes get people killed. It may have gone well this time, but it easily could have gone worse. Just the surprise of being lunged at could have made the guy reflexively squeeze the trigger.
As someone who works the register in a gas station, please do not do this in the event of a simple robbery. All the items and money in the store are insured and replaceable. You, me, and any bystanders are not. I will just give them the money (the most they'll get is a couple hundred bucks at most anyway) and some scratchers tickets, and then report the tickets stolen when it's all over. Whoever cashes the tickets later is the robber.
Guys got his hands in the air while he's in a headlock. The smell of Crayola and chew on the Marine's breath should tell him that surrendering won't help.
I'm sure if the guy had a few free moments AFTER seeing the gun, he might have considered a different path. But there's still a chance that had he done nothing he could have been shot anyway. As well as other customers, as well as the guy at the register.
what ambulance, even if his hand is in another dimension, cops is all he deserves to get, don't waste an ambulance on literal shit, while legit ppl need em...
Reminds me of a joke a long time ago. Bunch off Marines were outside a bank doing charity work out collecting money for charity or something. Bank alarm goes off and the Marines step back as the Robert runs out. Robber gets too close and hits one of the Marines and swears "get out of the way" while waving the gun at them.
Police said they don't understand how he broke so many bones tripping on the curb and hope he wakes up from the coma. There were no witnesses so it will remain a mystery.
Dude isn't coming from a place of calm reasoning, nor should be expected to be. It's instinctual. May have ended poorly to be sure but don't chastise someone for reflex when we are all passing judgment, sitting on our couch, watching this
This might seem heroic, but its how you get yourself or some bystander shot. Saving some gas station owner 120 bucks from the register is not worth endangering yourself and others. This time it went ok, some other time some poor schmuck gets shot.
Logically, you are correct and backed by the statistics, but IRL..... Humans aren't the most logical beings, especially in times of immense stress. Even IF you understand that principle, there's no guarantee what you would do in the situation. This guy decided to fight, probably because he was taught how to fight when someone has a gun on you in his army training, because in the army, if someone has a gun on you, there probably going to kill you anyway.
I don't see this as only a crime against the gas station. They are terrorizing every customer too, I feel the customers have a moral right to stand up and fight back.
Yes, but bystanders and cashiers could have been shot regardless of whether the big guy disabled one of the robbers or not. EVERYONE COULD have been shot. Americans have absolutely no common sense when it comes to firearms. Pity the big guy deprived the thief of his right to bear arms.
This might not seem heroic, it looks dangerous and unnecessary. Especially when there are two guys and the "hero" banks on one of them immediately fleeing. Which he did or the fat guy would be dead. Just stupid risk taking and glorifying the army of all things.
There is. Robbery (even at gunpoint) and murder are two very different things, and if you are willing and intending to kill every witness, you start with that immediately. You don’t successfully rob a place, and then upgrade to murder charges as an afterthought. Or rather, the chance of that happening is smaller, than the one that the gun goes of during a struggle.
If you are willing to rob at gunpoint there's a great chance you are willing to shoot any perceived threat. You gonna place your trust in someone like that? Seems like a bad place to put trust.
Lets not hang on that word, cuz in this case, mutha fucka was undoubtedly a threat. Don't expect anyone to know survival odds in robberies. It's not exactly an area of the general public's expertise. And the point is, odds or not, you don't know in any given case.
Bureau of Justice statistics only show a little more than a 5% chance that a gun is even fired during an armed hold-up (and not always at a person, and if at a person, not always fatally). So, yes, there is A chance that the genius w/ the gun might shoot someone, but not a super high chance (less than 1-in-20 compared to 19-in-20 he doesn’t). In fact, there is actually a statistically higher chance that the gun, while being brandished, isn’t even loaded than there is that someone will get shot.
Yeah and we could all wake up dead tomorrow, but we can clearly see what happened in the video. The suing aspect wouldn't hold up when there's video proof the guy pulled a gun on him. That's self defense.
Yeah no. If that's the argument, you can also argue that a meteorite might hit the store. This is armed robbery. Most people will not randomly shoot you if you just hand over the money. They'd rather go to jail for armed robbery than murder, pretty sure.
When I did BJJ I was always taught to give the guy with the gun what they want because jerking their arm may make them fire and hit you or a bystander.
That was pretty much the assessment I made when I was robbed at gunpoint. I didn’t care so much for myself as the guy behind the counter who had no control over the situation. Plus there were 3 other guys who may or may not have also had guns on them.
yes, but that guy didn't do bullshit Jujitsu. he's a us marine. meaning he is on a strict regime and a diet consisting of mountain dew and purple crayons. he doesn't care about "innocent" bystanders. colateral damage is just another word for "should have moved out of the way buddy" /s
Look closer. He actually completely fails to control the gun on his first attempt. He grabs the barrel and he doesn’t move the gun away so much as the kid pulls the gun away. The Marine barely makes contact—most of the weapon movement is the kid reacting, NOT the Marine. It’s only in the bum rush struggle that follows where the Marine gets the weapon. And even when trying to twist the gun away, he’s twisting it away from himself, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t being turned towards someone else.
You can nit-pic and overanalyze it as a failure. Stay on your sidelines and in your lane, where you belong. You wouldn’t recognize success if it bit you in the ass. Let the people who take action handle this.
The evidence is in the video. The Marine makes contact, but utterly fails to take control of the weapon. Kid pulls it out of his grip before he can even close his fingers.
Had the Marine had weapon control the whole time, that may be different, but he simply did not. And the kid easily could have shot him in the gut if he’d been even slightly more mentally prepared.
It turned out ok, and thank god it did, but it EASILY could have gone differently. He got very lucky.
Nice to be able to examine in minute detail after. Stay to your monday morning quarterbacking. Nice that you can live your life in theory, Professor Woulda Coulda Shoulda.
You're not wrong. Given bros age, there's a better than even chance he's fired an M4 in anger, so may have a better sense than you and I of the level of danger there. He also handled the pre-game perfectly, walking away like "not my pig not my farm" until the gunner went past him, wasn't paying attention to him. Looks to me like GI Joe also took advantage of the gunman's adrenaline over-focus. It could have gone very wrong. Looks like everyone - even the gunman - lived.
There is also a certain amount of "how much are you willing to bleed to accomplish your task" that the average person doesn't have. When I was training against edged weapons, the trainer said, "if you're unarmed fighting someone with a knife, you're about to get stabbed. My job is to teach you how to get stabbed strategically so you can keep fighting. This training won't protect you from harm, but you'll get to pick what hurts. Better your arm than a lung."
Firing an M4 doesn’t mean the guy you grab won’t reflexively squeeze the trigger. Or that the guy behind him didn’t have a gun tucked in the back of his waistband. Or that there weren’t three more pistol-packing buddies keeping watch just outside. Or that they won’t look up his name in the news after the fact and go shoot up his house. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have acted, necessarily, but that he literally had NO way to know if he was making the situation better or worse.
I take it more as a caution label for randoms who might be feeling heroic if they're ever in this position one day "here's the risks you may not be considering before you attempt to do this."
Exactly. Any professional will tell you that—purely statistically speaking—you are FAR more likely to get hurt fighting back than just giving them the cash or whatever. And that’s no matter how trained you are. Can it go well? Sure. But it is still more likely not too. There are just too many variables at play…too many things you don’t know, too many racing thoughts and heightened emotions and adrenaline, everything.
It’s also one of the weird things about “Stand Your Ground” laws. These laws>
The people I described are called street gangs and they literally do all of those things already without any need for advanced organizational skills. There was a hold up not too long ago here in Texas where the clerk pulled out a gun in a robber with a gun only to have bullets start coming in the window from his two buddies sitting in the getaway car waiting who could see the whole thing. They don’t have to be as professional as the Ocean’s 11 crew to simply have armed friends waiting outside.
I feel like that HAS to be an outlier. There are so many more efficient ways to obtain money illegally with three guns and three dudes than robbing a Cstore that probably has a time lock safe for anything over $X?
That sure as hell sounds like an outlier compared to most of the other two bit robberies that take place - not saying that you're wrong, but in my experience most low stakes robberies like this are just stupid kids.

And I doubt that is all armed robberies with guns. Most robberies dont use guns. You just come home and your shit is gone.
