During the attack Miller was carrying the wounded to safety. After his commander was mortally wounded Miller then manned a . 50-caliber antiaircraft gun, for which he had no training, and continued firing on the enemy until he ran out of ammunition and received the order to abandon ship.

I don't recall hearing that and haven't been able to find anything about it, but it's not impossible. I do see the initial Navy response was a simple letter of commendation which would have passed unnoticed if not for a stateside paper with a large black audience that spotted the mention of "an unknown [Black] soldier" in the official list of commendations from Dec 7. They went digging for his name, then led a campaign to upgrade the award to a well-deserved Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.

The presidents that the other Ford Class carriers are named after (Kennedy and Ford) were both in the Navy during WW2 and Kennedy has a purple heart. A quick read of his assignments will tell you he wasn't tucked away. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corp medal for his actions when his PT boat was destroyed and the purple heart is awarded for being wounded due to the actions of the enemy.
