The most common ways of preserving foods before modern methods and the advent of refrigeration were drying, smoking or curing, salting, and acidification.
Mustard has a lot of acetic acid (vinegar, for you non-chemists) and would probably do a pretty good job of keeping it from spoiling, even if all the water had evaporated.
I’d eat it if I needed to in order to survive, but since I have a Kroger’s a quarter mile up the street, I’ll pass today.

Like 5 years ago or so we were visiting my parents and made a chocolate cake. My mom noted that the cocoa powder was “a little old” and when we were done we decided to get more powder and make another. That night I snuck to the kitchen and found the package. It was something like 15 years old! I do regret not keeping it.
