He wanted to keep his invention alive, so he talked movie theaters into using it. As a result, Hollywood exploded into what it is today because people went nuts for "air conditioned" comfort and needed more movies to watch. He also kind of created Florida because AC made it possible for people to live in that swampy, humid hell-hole.

The US stopped installing R-22, commercially known as Freon, units in 2010. Currently we use R-410A aka Puron. Granted you might find Freon units around still being serviced; however, theres a dwindling supply of the refrigerant available.

For the cranky people commenting. The concept is not just for cooling off people in movie theatres. The fundamentals of refrigeration mean we can keep food frozen, or cold, or medicines cool, keep blood frozen to stockpile for times of emergencies or operations.

I meant I wonder how Americans cope when they come and visit here. There are still plenty of hotels and restaurants that don't have AC, as do most of our houses. None of our schools have it either. It's the norm here.

Most definitely. I have a small unit and I rarely have mine on. I absolutely only have it on when the temperatures are too high and that means leaving it off in uncomfortable heat sometimes. It's genuinely painful because I struggle with heat a lot and thrive in the cold (I often don't turn my heating on in winter, in fact it's never on in my house until the others get home from work) so during the day people have said my house is inhospitable ha.

I think as with almost anything in life, responsible use is key. As with heating, air conditioning, hot water use, even meat eating (the ideal is 50g a day I believe but many people eat much more than that.)

Unfortunately yea they do if they have leaks. Most refrigerants are hydroflurocarbons. They form bonds with oxygen to make c02 if released into the atmosphere. Which isn't inherently bad in itself but prevents the bonding of oxygen to oxygen to form our ozone, and we kinda need the ozone. The industry is taking steps toward sustainable refrigeration which is a plus. Thank you kilgali act

We need to bring back underground pipe cooling. We could be reducing a lot of the electrical costs and preventing things like power outages from having such massive effects on people. Maybe even preventing power outages entirely since the load on the grid would be lowered... but retrofitting homes has its obstacles too.

Using electricity doesn't necessarily contribute to global warming. Depends where the power is coming from. My Electric Co-op uses roughly 40-60% wind power during the day, and the rest is coal powered. Northern North Dakota for reference.

AC units are heat pumps. They move heat outside which doesn't increase global temperature, but can still create noticeable heat waves in cities. The relevant contribution they make for global warming is the gas emissions from power plants burning fossil fuels. Heat doesn't "add up" because it dissipates to space via photons (black body radiation), so atmospheric composition is what really matters. That blanket dictates the balance of much heat is trapped or released affecting global temperature.

It's a lot like a car sitting in a parking lot. Greenhouse gasses act like the car's windows. That glass transparent so it lets light radiation in, but the material is better at insulating heat energy than it is at blocking light energy. You can have a laptop running in the car generating heat, but what REALLY matters to the long term temperature, is if you open up the windows or not to let that heat energy leave.

No one asked but I like science so: A heat pump works by compressing and expanding a medium like liquid freon. If you take a rubber band and stretch it, it heats up. Relax it and it will cools down again. If you move the rubberband outside to stretch it, wait for it to radiate that heat and cool down while outside, and move it back inside relax the band to make it colder, you can move the overall heat.

Well, the problem is that to "move that heat", you need to supply it with energy, and a significant amount of it. IMO in the US, air conditioning in the summer is responsible for more energy consumption than heating in the winter.

what ? but they need power to run. u need alot of energy to cool down anything. thats where you produce CO2. .. as soon as you plug something in a poweroutlet the problem doesnt magically disappear. that energy needs to be produced. that increases CO2 output. from the powerplant providing power. the US needs rolling blackouts to not fuck up the overloaded electrical grid. guess what loads the grid 24/7 cause someone doesnt want to sweat.

well you use the AC more in the middle of the day when solar is producing the most. So the load follows the production curve and it isn't a huge problem If and only if there's a huge solar buildout. In the future you can even time your AC to kick on when there's energy available that would otherwise be curtailed (and is thus basically free)

For some perspective, an air conditioner is 4-8 times more energy efficient at cooling then an electric resistive heater. When you reverse the process now you get more energy efficient heating too (nearly on par with natural gas (cost-wise in several markets)) 🤷♂️

ACs are HIGH power users, yes, but usually quite efficient. A good unit has a COP over 5, so cools with 5× the power it consumes.

The thread is about global warming, not about individual comfort per kWh, which is dependent on insulation, temp delta, cooled volume surface area, and, indeed, the marketing metric COP, which isn't a fixed number, but varies with both evaporator and condenser temperature. Higher COP, smaller delta t, lower condenser and compressor temp, better insulation, smaller cooled volume all reduce input energy, which lowers emissions and the cost of replacing C with sun+wind+storage.

Yeah, it is silly. Dividing zero by zero cannot have a definite answer, so 0/0 = 0 is plainly wrong. In case anyone wonders: dividing by zero is the reverse of multiplying by zero, but multiplying by zero turns all numbers into 0. If you want to reverse that, there's no way to know where you should end up because you could've started anywhere. That's also why derivations that accidentally include 0/0 can (and often do) produce the wrong result, because they can technically produce ANY result.

Solar fortunately gives power at high rates when AC is needed. Eventually running AC in the middle of the day could be almost free.
