The US stopped installing R-22, commercially known as Freon, units in 2010. Currently we use R-410A aka Puron. Granted you might find Freon units around still being serviced; however, theres a dwindling supply of the refrigerant available.

The relevant contribution they make for global warming is the gas emissions from power plants burning fossil fuels. Heat doesn't "add up" because it dissipates to space via photons (black body radiation), so atmospheric composition is what really matters. That blanket dictates the balance of much heat is trapped or released affecting global temperature.

ACs are HIGH power users, yes, but usually quite efficient. A good unit has a COP over 5, so cools with 5× the power it consumes.

That said, it also literally saves lives in a heat wave, so we really more renewable energy, not less air conditioning. (Also way less industrial pollution. That's a big one)

Solar fortunately gives power at high rates when AC is needed. Eventually running AC in the middle of the day could be almost free.
