#7 is silly. The point of a co-pilot is to be an equal and tell you when you're wrong. Look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Flight_801 where the co-pilot *knew they were about to fly into a mountain* but kept his mouth shut out of respect, and fear of the pilot's temper. 229 people dead.

Thats a wizzo. If pilot did that at a banking knife edge with the tomcat wings swept back to delta at low alt, youre like asking to die. Only fuck around at + 25000ft, that gives you time to get out of a g-lock or wake up from a blackout. You the pilot and wizzo will die if you fail to recover. Even an ejection, life isnt garanteed.

Was going to say. Pilot really didn't have the time or attention to take his hands and eyes off the scenery given that is probably the Mach loop in Wales.
SergeyPrkl
Mach Loop is awesome. When the Pilots know where the tiny humans are photographing, so, even if they don't see them, they know they are there and do this stuff. Like this year, one had a sign that said "HI MOM!"

That is what I thought. The pilot sits in the front with the person behind in charge of the weapons where they may also handle navigation and ground communication.

#3 Not quite. The characters on the helicopters there are two of the "Kisarazu sisters" fictional mascot characters of the JGSDF 4th Anti-Tank helicopter unit. Female members of the unit would cosplay as these characters during some public events (not pilots though, as there are/were supposedly no female anti-tank helicopter pilots in the JGSDF). The professionally wrapped up "Itasha" helicopters in that photo are from an event in 2013, and were a huge hit with the audience and online. /1
nemocares
So huge was the success that it finally made JGSDF command take notice of what the 4th was doing, and so the unit was promptly told to knock it the fuck off. Source, with link to the Japanese source which has a lot more pictures: https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/17gh8g9/japan_air_self_defence_force_ah1s/

#1 - the Mach loop is a really popular spot for photographers - it's basically guaranteed there'll be someone there with a camera on any given day!

#15 is like that because those hangers were at Hickman AFB during the Pearl harbor attack and are not allowed to be torn down since they're considered historic places. I used to work in one that still had the bullet holes from being strafed. Mine had an entire 2 store office built inside but from the outside looked like a normal hanger.
bardman135
I work at an aeronautics facility, and I'm pretty sure it's like that because it's too cold when it's all the way out from under the covers, but too hot when it's all the way in. Of course, this isn't my department...

The text added is wrong. The wiki page needs verification if 330 planes were built.

It means somebody said 330 were made on Wikipedia, but they didn't attach or link to a source for the information.

#3 #3 It's better than that. This is a squadron of "Tank Killer" helicopters that have a high percentage of female pilots and became the subject of a recruitment campaign to attract more females into the JSDF. The pilots stylised themselves of anime characters. The camping was hugely successful.

BlueSheep
Sadly the truth is not that shiny, female cannot be real pilots in the JSDF even if they're trained, but a lot of crewmembers are females. The helicopters was designed from fictionnal characters and then they choosed some members (not pilots) that look alike and cosplayed for the show. All this was unofficial and then the JSDF had to take action to stop it.
TsubakiTragic
I dissent.

#1 That’s not the pilot, that’s the navigator/weapon systems officer (WSO/Wizzo).
Baron29
Beat me to it
nobodyspecial995
And he didn't "spot the photographer".
BishlamekGurpgork
I would argue that both officers jointly posed for this, since you can't position the aircraft for this shot without the pilot.
gablestout
If that's where I think this is (the Mach Loop), he's by no means the first, nor will he be the last, to post for a shot...it's it's a dream location for military aviation enthusiasts.
phuzz00
The valleys are pretty narrow there, so the aircraft have to pass through pretty much the same area every time. The pilot is concentrating on not smashing into a Welsh sheep at 300mph.
BishlamekGurpgork
Well, that, and that it's a low-altitude training area. Given that photographers haunt the mach loop all the time, I don't think it's absurd to imagine that the pilot put on a show with or without knowing anybody's there. But I also don't imagine it's absurd for a pilot to know there are photographers on the ground before they start their run.
LemmingRuss
It'll have been an RAF Tornado, so just Navigator. Does all the jobs except flying, but RAF doesn't use WSO. +1 on your comment though. I came here to say that.
PigsWeGetWhatPigsDeserve
That’s… why I included ‘navigator’ before the slash?
gablestout
And if that's a Tornado, I'm guessing this is a shot from the Mach Loop?
5Mac0
So Nav only navs? Guessing the pilot does all the stuff a WSO would? With today's tech I'm surprised they still roll with pure Navs. Genuinely curious.
LemmingRuss
Nah, they do all the WSO stuff. They just get called 'Nav' as another word for back-seater.
5Mac0
Ah makes sense. I always pictured true Navs as a dude/ette in the back with a paper map going "stop banking I can't find north!!!" Thanks for the clarification :)

#18 Boeing X-32 was a competitor for Lockheed Martin X-35. The latter won the Joint Strike Fighter development competition and became the F-35. In another, better timeline, a score of nations are now flying jolly smiling F-32s.
Raziel420
Smiling for the camera as they end your life.
TerranIV
The X-32 is the dumbest jet design ever. There is no way the military can ask kids to risk their lives to pilot something that will get them laughed at and mocked.
Hopefully whatever moron at Boeing didn't understand this was fired when they lost billions of dollars to Lockheed.
phuzz00
Ah, someone who's not yet seen the ugliest plane in the world! Behold! The Fairey Gannet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairey_Gannet_AEW.3 Although the Blackburn R1 is a close second: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackburn_Blackburn#/media/File:Blackburn_Blackburn_II_in_Flight.jpg
TerranIV
I DID see the ugliest plane in the world with my own eyes: the X-32 at the Pax River Navy Air Museum in Maryland.
It is even uglier in person than in photos. 🤢
The Gannet and R1 are beauties in comparison.
