Homeless shelters were desperate for workers and I got a job for $14/hr plus benefits. I paid $400/mo in rent in Seattle. If I'd been graduating now, I'd have been up against someone with a Masters in Social Work for a $17/hr job and paying $1800/mo in rent. So yeah comparatively I had some hope back then.
I lived west of Port Angeles on one of the reservations. Degree from one of top Uni's. Nobody in Seattle or the surrounding cities were calling me in for an interview. Sucked if you lived far away from the jobs.

Unfortunately for a lot of people with health problems, they can't plan anything that will involve moving or disrupting the things they need to live. I have a disabling back condition that causes me chronic pain, if I don't have a comfy bed, my pain medications, my tens machine, my massager, my heating pad, ice packs, etc. then I'm basically the guy from Futurama who died from Boneitis.

Locally, the far right has the same plan, but at smaller scales. My former QAnon-before-QAnon neighbor's plan was basically to get with his meth buddies and seize the surrounding area at gunpoint (probably still is, I don't know what he's up to now, and personally hope he's dead by now). Learn, educate yourself and deconstruct their reason if it's violent or doesn't make sense. Or create compelling content on the platforms that need it. Unfortunately for a lot of people with health problems, they can't plan anything that will involve moving or disrupting the things they need to live. I have a disabling back condition that causes me chronic pain, if I don't have a comfy bed, my pain medications, my tens machine, my massager, my heating pad, ice packs, etc. then I'm basically the guy from Futurama who died from Boneitis.

Locally, the far right has the same plan, but at smaller scales. My former QAnon-before-QAnon neighbor's plan was basically to get with his meth buddies and seize the surrounding area at gunpoint (probably still is, I don't know what he's up to now, and personally hope he's dead by now). I'm of the opinion that he wants to get to that point as soon as possible so he can wipe his ass with the social contract and start committing atrocities - i.e., accelerationism.

My house is outside the suburbs in fairly close to nature place, we have a shared well for water, my house heats up (if needed with wood), I'm rebuilding a genset big enough to power more than my house, I have 2000l of fuel for it... We're all going to suffer and die regardless, even at the best of times; the human condition. My daughter has lupus. My wife has endometriosis. I have damaged discs and chronic migraines. Still, life goes on. We suffer probably more than most, but we're glad to be here for one another, glad to do things that help make the world a little better in small ways for folks we can help. With each new generation, there's a new shot to get things right, or do better, at least.

When the genetic testing to help me find the right depression medication forced me to acknowledge that I was carrying my depression in my genes, I decided I couldn't have kids. How could I claim to love someone while knowing that I was likely to be setting them up for a life without happiness and with an unending suicidal depression? Or adopt if I might kill myself or even make a kid deal with my problems?
