He was clearly taking my messages, asking chatGPT to explain and then pasting the result as his own response and I remember that he was actually smart three or four years ago. They weren't even difficult topics - just bread and butter stuff for my sector.
Some people are all about a result, preferably the shortest path to that result, and don't really care if the result is perfect so long as it passes their sniff test. Along comes some new tech offering a magic wand for a whole range of tasks and they're going to use it. Similar with people that use pay to win options in video games, they just care that they won/finished, and there's a lot of them.
I would have hoped there'd be a bigger gulf between "I will cheat and cheese this frustrating level" and "I will outsource my work to the halfass machine" since I've spent my entire career in increasingly critical sectors such as "You probably want your servers to not explode" and "I think planes should not fall apart on takeoff" but apparently even as I drift towards my fifties I am still a sweet summer child.
I've experienced similiar when communicating with external teams; it's evident they don't actually understand what's being discussed and are consulting slop to try and keep up.
Luckily my actual peers/colleagues have no interest in AI, not least of all due to being a very specialized domain and the fact basically everyone is 35+

I’m in college right now for my masters, my teachers don’t fight ai and encourage us to learn how to use it. It helps. But there’s also a fine line between it being a study aid/assistant, and having it do all the work for you.
There is a difference between using AI to write papers and learning AI either as coding, Interface or whatever next gen level is coming. Some kids will always cheat, and take the easy way, or like me who was putting himself through school and couldn't get loans, I didn't care what the grade was carrying 21 units a semester. I was just trying to graduate and would have loved AI to help with the load.

Eh, those aren't super trustworthy either, but yes. The professor that laid traps for AI-using students also got a couple other researchers completely disgraced for catching them use AI in fucking SUBMITTED RESEARCH PAPERS. He was reading some papers and noticing some telltale signs, then came to find out that a few of the citations were of completely hallucinated papers with completely hallucinated authors.

During my masters classes… Masters Degree Classes… there was 60% of the students that were outright failed for using AI for their papers.
My professor’s were, and still are appalled. I just laughed. Fuck em.

If the cheaters would get kicked out on the second strike like they are supposed to, it would stop happening. I don't know "using AI to write essays" when explicitly told not to is seen as different cheating than hiring someone to do your essays for you or copying someone else's work. Kick them out!

I’m in college right now for my masters, my teachers don’t fight ai and encourage us to learn how to use it. It helps. But there’s also a fine line between it being a study aid/assistant, and having it do all the work for you.

There is a difference between using AI to write papers and learning AI either as coding, Interface or whatever next gen level is coming. Some kids will always cheat, and take the easy way, or like me who was putting himself through school and couldn't get loans, I didn't care what the grade was carrying 21 units a semester. I was just trying to graduate and would have loved AI to help with the load.

There's a post up on the front page about an economics class at Harvard. The teacher made the midterm and final a remote exam, and the attendance tripled. The midterms came back with an average of 96%, when it was previously around 60%. He made the final in-class, and the average was 48%. When he announced the final would be in-person, 27 students either dropped the class instantly or never showed up for the final.
AI is utter shit, and it's ruining students and schools.

I have two professor friends and yeah they hate it. It’s to the point where they can’t rely on projects or homework, only tests. You can imagine that makes things hard for Computer Science. But even for all those they catch you know some are still managing to sneak through. It doesn’t go well for the future.
