I referred to EVE as "Spreadsheets in space" in discord because I played it for almost a decade at launch. That comment got me privately invited to six different servers for EVE veterans.
Dont forget about games from Swedish developer Frictional Games: Penumbra series, Amnesia series, Soma. All about surviving in cold, dark and sometimes underwater and offworld places.
WURM, the parent/grandparent game to Minecraft. Notch was working on a new potential mining system for That game (which did not pan out), and uploaded his proof of concept, not even an alpha, and when it was not going to work for WURM, let the wurm players play around on it for a bit (solo, not connected world, like I said proof of concept only), and people Liked it. Many of the early development decisions for minecraft borrow a lot from wurm, but simplify them, a lot.
While there is no focus on winter... the game is a bit of a "here are some low quality starter tools, everything in the world is built by the players" try not to die... with extreme terraforming possible. The game is split into WURM Online and WURM Unlimited, WO is still getting official updates and so on, while WU allows private servers, offline play, and modding, both can be found on steam.
Satisfactory is entertaining the entire time you play it, even when it gets a bit grindy in phase 4. Valheim is just grindy the whole time and nothing really dynamic ever happens in it.
Ashlands takes fucking bag space above all else. Holy shit why does every enemy generate 12 stacks of rocks on every attack. Beats the visibly feature of Mistlands, but christ my obliterator is putting in some serious work.
This is the first time I heard someone describe the mechanics of Generation Zero as good. It's atmospheric but the gameplay tends to be pretty meh unless it got majorly overhauled a few years after release.

I mean, its dark half the year, i live in the south of Norway, when i was a kid i would walk to school before sunrise and go home as the sun was setting.
I spent a little time in Alaska because my brother lives there now. Even living in the southern US and comparing that to living in the Pacific Northwest, days would be significantly shorter farther north. Southern Alaska and Oslo are kinda on the same latitude, and late fall had super short daylight hours.
Yea which is funny because Minnesota shares the latitudes with France rather than anything Scandinavian. I guess that's why the immigrants somehow found it so uplifting.
I remember my only winter in Lithuania, it was like 4-5 hours of daylight, and those hours were usually cloudy/overcast. I've had a hard time with fall/winter seasons ever since.
Yeah, but tell us about summer, where it's light from 3 AM until 11 PM.
I state fact here: I live in the best place there is to live, the high desert of the southwest US. It may get hot during the day in summer, but it cools off substantially at night. There are no tornadoes, no earthquakes, very few mosquitos, light snow at the higher elevations, which makes for good skiing but not really having to deal with bad roads. We get something like 330 days of sunshine per year, and there's not

Awesome that you like it. Hope that the stellar review doesn't immediately hike rent to unlivable highest, or you won't have anything left for food from the nearby supermarkets
The story that it was trying to convey was great but the gameplay was mid at best. Was getting bored at jumping moving stuff and getting stabbed by a fucking spider.
The game I worked on is about cyborg animals feeding a dragon until one gets punished for winning. Obviously it comes from our personal experience growing up in Canada.
Norway absolutely sucks on video games in general. Sure we have some minor success studios, but the incentives from the government is abysmal weak and have left us lagging behind the industry for a long time now. Also if you just go over to Sweden, they have so many game studios already up and running so most of the talented youth just end up working there instead. It took so long to get the government to understand the industry and its potential so it was side lined as just culture projects.
ignorant but curious American question: do private investors not see interest in the game industry either? From what I understand of the Nordic countries, there are lots of government supports in various areas, but it's still a mixed economic system (so still lots of capitalist investment in private companies), is that not accurate?
Private investors doesn't have the same hold in Norway as in the US. Sure there are some events that allow people to present their idea to private investors, but that's much less common and getting significantly enough funded, even less. Though kickstarter and similar sites are possible to use.
Its the same in Denmark, there just isn't money nor support from the government.. Lets ignore potential great industries, close down blooming industries, and lets sell of huge industries that makes us tons and tons of money! Lets focus on the dying industries and make a ton of IT people because its the future.
Yea, making games here is not super easy as you most likely has to pocket out yourself or you get lucky.

I came to the conclusion that I don’t enjoy playing Destiny 2 at all. What I enjoyed was talking with my friend while playing with him. Unfortunately he is overly obsessed with the game and makes poor life choices because he plays Destiny instead of being an adult. I’m not saying you can’t do both, but he is a little too into it.
Same except I'm way more positive about it. Congrats on winning EVE! The only thing I miss is pew pewing rocks in the cheapest mining ship I could find that just wasn't worth the effort of blowing up while listening to music and studying. Nothing else I've found quite scratches that itch.
I had lots of fun with it. Wormhole space is the fucking best. My corp had a c3 with null sec static. Most cozy when we wanted it to be, but could push our chain for content or go find other c3 nulls. We netted a faction fit Rattlesnake pilot ratting in his c3 null once - his fit was worth $100 at the time.
My buddy was into it for a little while. He said it was interesting at first, but after a while, it felt more like a job than a video game. I believe there was a very in-depth Down the Rabbit Hole video on YouTube about the game, definitely worth a watch if anyone has 6 hours free.
Define free LOL. So Eve is free to a point then to advance you have a couple choices subscribe or plex your accounts and yes Accounts. Plex is how real world money is given a value on items or ships. People can buy plex with real world money and sell it in eve for ISK. People that mastered Eve and are in game wealthy can play virtually free. But you got to keep earning. At one point I had 4 accounts, all toons on each account training still making profit. But that was a lot of time.
I think of the 6 years I played, there were maybe a handful of times I could recall being wonderfully thrilled and excited. Rest of the time, boredom, frustration, fucking around on comms. Worst thing I ever did was volunteer to lead fleets. Fucking hated it.
I once read about a WoW player who made so much gold, he bought more accounts for making gold. I think he was the one with the 40-hour goldmaking schedule. I played on and off since 2007 and I am sure there were weeks or longer periods that I spent 40 hours or more a week posting. During Warlords of Draenor, there were more sellers than buyers and we kept undercutting each other. I don't know if I made money overall. I wish that I had just leveled characters.
You can buy subscription time with in-game currency. If you go deep enough into the industry tree and learn the mechanics you can fund your gametime entirely with passive income. You'll queue up 7 days worth of industry at a time and use that to fund your actual combat toon with shiny stuff
Its uncommon as you need a lot of knowledge and it takes at least a year to accumulate that many skill points to be profitable with industry. It works because you can buy 1 month gametime (PLEX) and sell it on the market for in game currency (ISK). Its enough money that can buy several ships and fit them out for decent earning activities
Someone is always paying. It's essentially legalized gold-selling. *Someone* buys the game time with real money, and it can then be transferred for in game money. Meaning the guy who bought the game time gets in game money for real money and the other guy gets game time for in game money. It's sort of clever because illicit gold-selling happens in every MMO anyway, and you can't really stop it, but this puts a price ceiling on it and reduces its lucrativeness.
Its work. You are competing in the markets with the other players. EVERYTHING bought and sold short of a few select items are player built. So its akin to some old mature players are like walmart while most players are a farmers market stand. I used to build capital ships (da big ones) and sold them with kits to fit them out with for my alliance. I made good money. Selling 5-6 a month was enough for one toon to PLEX. I had 7 toons. So i still needed another income source.
no. it's all in space (piloting spaceships). what sets it apart is they encourage 'non consensual PvP', so you can be killed by anyone, anytime, anywhere. when you die, all your stuff drops and can be taken by whoever kills you. the economy is also player run, so you can manipulate the economy, scam people, etc. basically if it doesn't involve something IRL, anything goes. It suck you in, but it's also one of the more brutal MMOs out there
I have an obscene amount of blue essence since the conversation happened years ago and have since just bought out new champs once they went down in price (6300?) but haven't really played in the last year or so.
Me too buddie. I left a few years back. Playing to play was not fun after 5 rorqs a super a fax a dread and all the associated support toons. I got up to leadership positions in a nullsec alliance. Had to quit when it began affecting my marriage.
I played for 5yrs mid-late 2000s. Went to Iceland twice for Eve-fest. That was cool. Meeting devs and whatnot. Ran a podcast for a bit. Was more into the meta-game. But after PLEX, the game changed. Economy got wonky. CCP got capricious about mechanics changes.
Oh i see. You tryina get my secrets. I was Pandemic Horde. Then moved from them with the panfam a bit. Joined a corp called BUSA. They were more pvp oriented older players with a tendecy to goof off and have more fun than rank and file PH members did.
I hear ya, I didn't get that far, I quit after I lost a rorq, (I wasn't upset, it happens) but the entire alliance and my Corp was so pissed off cause it wasn't fit perfectly, and made everything in the area more dangerous. I saved up and bought a 2nd one fit properly, but never flew it due to fear of getting yelled at by everyone. It really killed the game for me.
Similar experience to me; it's a game that rewards people for being assholes and it's kinda funny because I always thought I was a bit of an asshole, until I played that game and realised that actually the asshole instinct is something totally alien to me.
So yeah if you ever feel like you're an asshole, go play eve for a few years and if you get anywhere then congrats you're an asshole, if you don't then you're likely a nice person.
By get anywhere I mean in a pvp sense because it's a very 1/
In my experience the pvp-focused players are more likely to be nice. Most show basic courtesy, a few are asses, and sometimes you get to know someone and end up flying with them later. Sometimes you end up with people you sometimes shoot and sometimes fly with but it's all good fun. The worst toxicity I've seen is from people who don't accept the game's pvp nature, think being attacked is a personal offense, and thus believe that playing the game as intended is indeed being an asshole.
This is a disconnect between expectations and what the game is. The people who jive with it aren't assholes - they enjoy good fights, they enjoy hunting people doing other things, they enjoy the danger and avoiding getting caught when on the other side. Some people don't get that you can shoot each others' spaceships and still be perfectly friendly with the human playing the game on the other side. And they will probably never be happy with the game.
Pvp focused game despite their attempts to add pve elements. All of the pve methods of making money always feel like an afterthought, they never make up for being part of a successful pvp corp.
Twice I had freighters blown up whilst in hi-sec space; once by a corp member who exploited the games quite clearly built for griefers friendly fire function which they claim is to allow like live fire exercises but is more often used by infiltrators to bag expensive kills.
Jump gate a couple of jumps from Jita and the guy swapped his battleship for my freighter because unlike other games the "guards" don't respond very fast or with the same extreme force they do in like wow or guild wars where they literally just one shot you. 3
Oh man, I wasted years of my life playing Freelancer. The vanilla game is pretty good, although the ending of the storyline feels rushed, but the modding community is what truly made this game magnificent. I played Total War, a complete conversion of the game, a lot harder, with harsh consequences for dying. But there have been plenty of other good ones, like a Star Wars total conversion, and someone even made an old style WW1 Red Barron style dogfighting mod.
It's got a great gameplay loop, and it's short enough to play in a weekend. It's not a GOAT kind of game, but it gets a lot right when other space games are mostly just big and empty. Which, to be fair, is what space is ... but it doesn't make for a great game.
I have a lot more experience with X3 than X2, but I played Freelancer a lot back in the day, and I can say Freelancer has more in common with No Man's Sky than it does with X3. I also played Elite Dangerous quite a bit, and I can see some similarities in there, too. Freelancer is the first big universe-scale multiplayer LAN-party space sim I played, but as good as it is, I spend more time in modern space sims for the better graphics and more content.

thebogusman101
It didnt used to be. And if you wanted to play for free, you had to make in game money. It took quite a while to make it.
adzc1987
Never used to be and from what I have seen it's free to play but you are quite limited in the free to play model.
bound4doom
Define free LOL. So Eve is free to a point then to advance you have a couple choices subscribe or plex your accounts and yes Accounts. Plex is how real world money is given a value on items or ships. People can buy plex with real world money and sell it in eve for ISK. People that mastered Eve and are in game wealthy can play virtually free. But you got to keep earning. At one point I had 4 accounts, all toons on each account training still making profit. But that was a lot of time.

ADDICTION IS NOT FUN
that's what I've learned about ... .. . MMORPG
zoeytg
I think of the 6 years I played, there were maybe a handful of times I could recall being wonderfully thrilled and excited. Rest of the time, boredom, frustration, fucking around on comms. Worst thing I ever did was volunteer to lead fleets. Fucking hated it.
Velv3tThunder
Mmm, competitive Excel.

People put so much money into Eve. People having multiple accounts at the same time seems strange to me.
MenloPart
I once read about a WoW player who made so much gold, he bought more accounts for making gold.
I think he was the one with the 40-hour goldmaking schedule.
I played on and off since 2007 and I am sure there were weeks or longer periods that I spent 40 hours or more a week posting.
During Warlords of Draenor, there were more sellers than buyers and we kept undercutting each other.
I don't know if I made money overall.
I wish that I had just leveled characters.
Elroydb
You can buy subscription time with in-game currency. If you go deep enough into the industry tree and learn the mechanics you can fund your gametime entirely with passive income. You'll queue up 7 days worth of industry at a time and use that to fund your actual combat toon with shiny stuff
AdrianDunne
How common is that? The game has to make money somehow so making it too easy to pay with in-game currency would seem to be unprofitable.
Elroydb
Its uncommon as you need a lot of knowledge and it takes at least a year to accumulate that many skill points to be profitable with industry. It works because you can buy 1 month gametime (PLEX) and sell it on the market for in game currency (ISK). Its enough money that can buy several ships and fit them out for decent earning activities
elucca
Someone is always paying. It's essentially legalized gold-selling. *Someone* buys the game time with real money, and it can then be transferred for in game money. Meaning the guy who bought the game time gets in game money for real money and the other guy gets game time for in game money. It's sort of clever because illicit gold-selling happens in every MMO anyway, and you can't really stop it, but this puts a price ceiling on it and reduces its lucrativeness.
thebogusman101
So i still needed another income source.
vanderzee
so eve is similar to destiny 2?
HonestlyNotARobot
no. it's all in space (piloting spaceships). what sets it apart is they encourage 'non consensual PvP', so you can be killed by anyone, anytime, anywhere. when you die, all your stuff drops and can be taken by whoever kills you. the economy is also player run, so you can manipulate the economy, scam people, etc. basically if it doesn't involve something IRL, anything goes. It suck you in, but it's also one of the more brutal MMOs out there

While believable, source?

i meant in the sense of not being fun, "I hate Destiny, it's my favorite game"

Black Desert Online have these kinds of numbers. Just afk fishing 24/7 for years.. i have 37k hrs myself.
DarkParn
This could also be a League of Legends player review.
GemsAreOutrageousTrulyTrulyTrulyOutrageous
As some who played LoL for over a decade and had like 7k ARAM games under my belt, yeah.... Been meaning to watch Arcane, tho.
DarkParn
Favorite Taric skin. Arcane is pretty good, and you'll only have a few weeks to wait for season 2.
GemsAreOutrageousTrulyTrulyTrulyOutrageous
Hell yeah, Bloodstone. My personal favorite is Pool Party, although Armor of the Fifth Age is also a true... ...Gem.
Colopty
I don't even play LoL but can recommend Arcane, it's a really good show in its own right. Second season can't come soon enough.
DarkBusterBaron
I used to like League regardless of the toxic players but then blue essence happened and it took 4 times longer to get a new champion.
GemsAreOutrageousTrulyTrulyTrulyOutrageous
I have an obscene amount of blue essence since the conversation happened years ago and have since just bought out new champs once they went down in price (6300?) but haven't really played in the last year or so.
TheNLK
The gameplay isn't much fun, the politics aren't much fun, but building up wealth is pretty fun lol
ReverseSyzygy
But ENOUGH ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS
legit WTF : "elections suck but it's fun being rich!" ?
FPAlpha
Sooo.. it's like work but you can't actually pay bills with it?
CommanderHamDemander
Exactly like real life!
TheNLK
Not very effectively, no.
UWAGAGABLAGABLAGABA
My favorite space game is rebel Galaxy. The music and space fights are amazing! Bit of a grind at the beginning, though.
FrancsTireur
Soundtrack was epic yeah, real firefly type feel
MutantTurd
I loved the first one, and thought the second one was just okay.
UWAGAGABLAGABLAGABA
I didn't even know there was a second one.
thebogusman101
Me too buddie. I left a few years back. Playing to play was not fun after 5 rorqs a super a fax a dread and all the associated support toons. I got up to leadership positions in a nullsec alliance. Had to quit when it began affecting my marriage.
kaarbaakimgr
I played for 5yrs mid-late 2000s. Went to Iceland twice for Eve-fest. That was cool. Meeting devs and whatnot. Ran a podcast for a bit. Was more into the meta-game. But after PLEX, the game changed. Economy got wonky. CCP got capricious about mechanics changes.
sonreir
Which alliance?
thebogusman101
Oh i see. You tryina get my secrets. I was Pandemic Horde. Then moved from them with the panfam a bit. Joined a corp called BUSA. They were more pvp oriented older players with a tendecy to goof off and have more fun than rank and file PH members did.
JapuNoodleStar
I hear ya, I didn't get that far, I quit after I lost a rorq, (I wasn't upset, it happens) but the entire alliance and my Corp was so pissed off cause it wasn't fit perfectly, and made everything in the area more dangerous. I saved up and bought a 2nd one fit properly, but never flew it due to fear of getting yelled at by everyone. It really killed the game for me.
Tovarish1013
Shit corp. Find another. I absolutely hate what public killboards did to the game.
FrancsTireur
Similar experience to me; it's a game that rewards people for being assholes and it's kinda funny because I always thought I was a bit of an asshole, until I played that game and realised that actually the asshole instinct is something totally alien to me.
So yeah if you ever feel like you're an asshole, go play eve for a few years and if you get anywhere then congrats you're an asshole, if you don't then you're likely a nice person.
By get anywhere I mean in a pvp sense because it's a very 1/
elucca
In my experience the pvp-focused players are more likely to be nice. Most show basic courtesy, a few are asses, and sometimes you get to know someone and end up flying with them later. Sometimes you end up with people you sometimes shoot and sometimes fly with but it's all good fun. The worst toxicity I've seen is from people who don't accept the game's pvp nature, think being attacked is a personal offense, and thus believe that playing the game as intended is indeed being an asshole.
elucca
This is a disconnect between expectations and what the game is. The people who jive with it aren't assholes - they enjoy good fights, they enjoy hunting people doing other things, they enjoy the danger and avoiding getting caught when on the other side. Some people don't get that you can shoot each others' spaceships and still be perfectly friendly with the human playing the game on the other side. And they will probably never be happy with the game.
FrancsTireur
Pvp focused game despite their attempts to add pve elements. All of the pve methods of making money always feel like an afterthought, they never make up for being part of a successful pvp corp.
Twice I had freighters blown up whilst in hi-sec space; once by a corp member who exploited the games quite clearly built for griefers friendly fire function which they claim is to allow like live fire exercises but is more often used by infiltrators to bag expensive kills.
Second time I was off a 2/
FrancsTireur
Jump gate a couple of jumps from Jita and the guy swapped his battleship for my freighter because unlike other games the "guards" don't respond very fast or with the same extreme force they do in like wow or guild wars where they literally just one shot you. 3
qtRaven
Try Freelancer. It's much more fun. No spreadsheets required.
willpostanything
Does it have to survive a cold and dark winter quest? God dammit.
qtRaven
Cold dark of Space.
Tjitso
Actually, it's pretty colourful.
Elroydb
Star Control :D
Th3H1ghlander
I take Star Control and raise you Escape Velocity
Elroydb
I see your raise and I go all in with Starsector!
tsuyoshikentsu
Oh! Well, I work. For the Lane Hackers.
We don't really run this place, but we have an *understanding* with the people who do.
carrotsonfire
Also Try X4: Foundations. There's even a Star Wars mod called Interworlds that is very well supported and has practically every ship you can think of.
unkownuser5
Have you tried the X series? I've recently lost about 180 hours into X4: foundations
Tjitso
Oh man, I wasted years of my life playing Freelancer. The vanilla game is pretty good, although the ending of the storyline feels rushed, but the modding community is what truly made this game magnificent. I played Total War, a complete conversion of the game, a lot harder, with harsh consequences for dying. But there have been plenty of other good ones, like a Star Wars total conversion, and someone even made an old style WW1 Red Barron style dogfighting mod.
BrianFarr
I don't see it on xbox, GOG or anywhere.
qtRaven
Here you go: https://archive.org/download/Freelancer_201807/Freelancer.iso Check TNG Mod & Discovery Mod. There's online RPG Servers too.
jial666
It's abandonware. The hd edition is a mod. Only way to get it now is piracy.
crypticorb
Isn't Freelancer 20 years old? I looked it up, even the HD version that someone made doesn't look that great.
Woolytop
I have bad news for you about EVE online.
Altanese
But it's fun.
Edowyth
It's got a great gameplay loop, and it's short enough to play in a weekend. It's not a GOAT kind of game, but it gets a lot right when other space games are mostly just big and empty. Which, to be fair, is what space is ... but it doesn't make for a great game.
MattTheImperialRadarTechnician
Yeah, graphics aren't everything. I still fire up SMAC, Freespace 2, Starlancer, Freelancer, Crimson Skies, etc. So easy to get lost in those worlds.
ihavenoideahowthisworks
Does anyone remember elite? On the BBC computer?
ViviAdorkable
Crimson Skies, woo!
MattTheImperialRadarTechnician
The Hollywood missions are still amazing, and the menu theme was iconic. Actually the entire soundtrack was done by Stan LePard and still holds up. https://soundcloud.com/stanlepard/sets/crimson-skies-1999-original-soundtrack
qtRaven
Freelancer is an older game. But it is still one of the best open world space games ever made. /gallery/WSxvEe8
MenloPart
I play Tradewars 2002, which dates back to the seventies.
jakedafish
I always liked Escape Velocity Overload.
HeadJamistan
I remember grinding with the corsair faction for the tankiest most powerful ship in the game.
qtRaven
I like the Zoners myself.
Apock93
And with new sweet mods it can be bought on New Manhattan for 100 credits!
Tjitso
The Titan flies like a cow (j/k). I always had an Eagle.
sleete
How's it compared to x2 and x3?
Tjitso
I tried X2, but gave up quickly. There's a specific button for everything. Far too complex for a simple person like me.
CaptainSpoonbeard
I have a lot more experience with X3 than X2, but I played Freelancer a lot back in the day, and I can say Freelancer has more in common with No Man's Sky than it does with X3. I also played Elite Dangerous quite a bit, and I can see some similarities in there, too. Freelancer is the first big universe-scale multiplayer LAN-party space sim I played, but as good as it is, I spend more time in modern space sims for the better graphics and more content.
qtRaven
Never played either. Open world space adventure with lots of factions, secrets, and ships to try. Good story with fun characters.
