Isn't imgur owned by some AI company now? I wish I had enough money to sponsor and moderate a collectivist shitposting community.
Affablesea9917
I used to spend hours scrolling on imgur but now I could go weeks without even opening the app anymore. They spent years sanitizing it and making it look pretty for advertisers and eventually they sold it out and it pretty much died.
Like how your favorite local food place gets bought out by a giant corporation and the whole place goes to shit.
Imgur was declining for a while but it got bad after 2020 when the political spam got really popular and never left.
I really miss old imgur.
UnoriginalPieceOfRepeatingShit
I'm here mainly out of nostalgia at this point.
TsubakiTragic
same... there are a couple of regular posters I like to read, but the americanization of all social media sites gets a little nauseating if you don't live in the US.
One final thing, 4-5 years ago there would be a couple of things daily in usersub that would blow my sox off. Now, I can go a week in usersub without thinking "wow, that's cool".
UnoriginalPieceOfRepeatingShit
The whole internet is just rage bait at this point. Like a 2 minute hate that runs 24/7.
mercyPandaRunner
Imgur helped me through my first major nightly panic attack. It was then that i downloaded the app and made an account. Yes, nostalgia keeps me here and the fact that there are still plenty of nice posts and people, if you wade through latex pictures and Trumps most recent.
Zestykitten
It's not just Imgur. The community within internet has been dying off for years and the emergence of AI has increased that speed, causing us to finally notice. The dead Internet theory is turning out to be incredibly true and we feel an emptiness we can't describe from our usual Internet sources because a lot of us don't realize it's full of bots and AI spam now, along with VERY broken algorithms. Start finding community outside of the internet again, folks

I remember being so proud of my first front page post way back in the day. But a combination the lowering of the gate (feels less satisfying IMO) and some very rude messages I have received in the past it just does not feel worth it here. BlueSky is a lot more fun to post OC on these days. Especially with Imgur now owned by an AI company.
MasterChristopher
The threshold is 50 now.
WhoAteAllTheBananasAndTookAShitOnTheCarpet
Yeah it's not fun anymore. The whole internet has become babified. This place used to have nudity and rude jokes, weird posts from non-western countries. Now it's all bland fb-style memes and American politics. The only politics that count, apparently...
qwertdeep
They have politics from other countries occasionally, when it relates to American politics like someone saying how stupid Trump is.
We need something similar to the Bechdel test on here to evaluate non-American representation on here
mikeymikec
What I find weird that if I accept the premise that imgur is dying / not receiving anywhere the traffic levels it used to, then why is the website still often very slow to load...
eldorel
They haven't changed the algorithm that scales up the Virtual Machine cluster it runs on. 90% average load looks the same at any scale.

Adverts, adverts and more adverts - especially large videos that attempt to load first. Then they reformat the page as you scroll making it very frustrating. My phone is worst: large ad loads taking up most of the top of the screen - the moment I scroll down to see the post the ad jumps below the post which is now disappearing off the top - grrrr...

Dude, imgur is a shell of what it once was. Have you tried spending 5 min on usersub? They suck all the fun of everything. Im not saying the whole of the users are dull, arrogant, self-serving, selfish bastards, but it does seems like the group who is trying to gatekeep what can and cannot reach FP, definitely is.
victoryscreech
I stopped using imgur frequently when people started posting too much politics awhile ago. It was completely unusable.
Ifekinlovesauerkraut
You know what's funny? There were times when I was browsing this site on my PC and had to SCROLL down to see all the new stuff, when I came back from a 5 minute toilet break. Right now, I just cooked and had lunch for an hour and there seem to be less than 5 new posts.

The irony as I look at this on most viral ...
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
Haha 😂 case in point?
PrincessWolf
I expect there's probably been a change in the algorithm to keep the front page a bit fresher. 'Most Viral' used to end up quite stagnant, which left casual users who don't trawl usersub bouncing off because they'd just see the same few posts over and over. So yes, those posts would reach astronomic levels of upvotes, but it doesn't encourage people to browse. A narrower time window and a lower upvote threshhold makes sense.
DonaldTrumpsFlaccidHairpiece
I dunno what time frame you're talking about. I see that front page stagnation far more now. Back in the day, if you didn't sign on to Imgur for a few hours, you'd never find whatever FP post you left off on, and would miss so much stuff. Just hours of scrolling to get through it all. So much more content was hitting Usersub and FP. You could refresh Usersub newest and get just dozens of posts per few seconds or so. Now. I just went and refreshed for a whole minute and got 2 new posts.
PrincessWolf
I guess our times just passed by each other like ships in the night
5Toner
I originally came to imgur to post OC. I can't be bothered anymore due to lack of interest. I'm now a part time lurker and get bored here within 5 minutes
FredGarvinMaleProstitute
It's called "Enshittification", a term coined by Cory Doctorow to describe the gradual decline in quality of online platforms as companies prioritize profits over user experience. It essentially means that something starts good, then gets worse over time, often through increasing advertising, sponsored content, and other tactics that prioritize profit over user satisfaction.
Mandarinduckmama
That's capitalism in a nutshell.
RigoryMorty
It's a stagnant community, like most communities are now on the internet. Some people leave and it doesn't refill with new users. We aren't the most welcoming bunch, we don't like change and we have a ton of "rules" that only we know. Just like reddit, which is also losing members at a steady rate.
EasierToPrayWhenIMasturbate
You use we like some fucking god.
CommodusLeitdorf
Reddit is losing people due to the fact Reddit is now publicly traded. What made Reddit good is all being crushed by the need to appeal to the market.
DonaldTrumpsFlaccidHairpiece
Its funny, because those "rules" use to be more approachable back in the day, when there was shit tons more people here. Get a few dozen downvotes for breaking a rule, but you could get hundreds for a post. Now, there's just, blah. I mean, back in the day, make a good post to hit FP and you could possible get 10k points on your post, maybe more. Now? Scanning the FP I barely see more than a few with 1k points. So dead.
Slydevil13
half the stuff I post just gets downvoted now, so I delete it. But the front page is basically just furry posts and politics now for some reason so I don't come back much anymore.
PicassoCT

You can't really post to the big subs on reddit. It's dead clickbot. I join my niches like r/Frasier, fountainpens, vintageads, but AITAH, ask reddit, shower thoughts, good luck figuring out what clickbait algo you have to beat to get a post there. I just mute everything on r/popular. Sad, really
Snooj
When I look at stuff I made the FP with a few years ago, almost none of the people who left comments are still active.
beeeeeeerkaaaaa
How can you tell?
Snooj
You click on their bio and see that they went from 10-12 comments a day to 0 comments a day about three years ago. Sure, some of them might have simply stopped commenting, but that seems like a minority compared to people who simply stopped coming here.
huffnpuff72
Lots of 'new' apps. User base isn't growing that fast for any of them.
joshuasplinth
Yea, I hear they’re all headed to Bluesky…
DemSumBigAssRidges
The amount of trolling on reddit has made that site near unusable. Make a comment at all and some no-lifer will report you for harassment and/or suicide counseling. Their mods let it happen too. It's gotten real fuckin gross over there.
colinstu
It’s the algorithms. The desktop I only see posts with proper amounts of votes. On mobile they sneak in so much of this glorified usersub stuff. There used to be better settings to tweak on both platforms but that’s been steadily getting worse for years.
UrbanPlatypus
Personally a lot changed when ads were shoved down our throats and the original giraffes left the building
EveryUsernameIsTaken4
There's been a drastic and noticeable change in the type of person who frequents the site. It was a fun, humorous, diverse crowd. I think the uniformity can be toxic to communities.
ImgursLibertarian
Yep. It used to be fun. You could even have discussions about difficult topics, but now there is ONLY one way to think on here, and that changes every 6 months.
Mandarinduckmama
The pile on of down votes is pretty incredible. Sometimes people have misinterpreted the comment and swarmed on it. That would send me away for sure. I've simply stopped commenting on nearly anything.
shitheadtookmyname
Hot take: People who look at the vote counts of their comments are fucking losers.
Mandarinduckmama

Like looking at the vote, count on your comments is only because you're trying to decide whether other people agree with you, which leads to groupthink. Just say what you want to say and move on

For me it’s the constant toxic negativity on Reddit that spills to Imgur. Yes, we all know shit is bad, doom scrolling won’t fix it. I replaced Reddit with reading books (ironic) and I’m only here when I’m really bored.
Bunghold
Yeah and I am sick and fucking tired of POLITICS. I get it, its a hot topic. I want somewhere to go where I DONT HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT FOR 5 MINUTES!

prosper020
People should be allowed to post whatever (non hate things) that they want to. Post should be tagged with what they are. Tags should be easy to effectively block. If tag blocking doesn’t do enough then the ones in charge should be fixing the problem, not users limiting other users.
Just like a worker refusing to cover extra shifts isn’t the problem, it’s the owner who doesn’t hire enough staff that is the problem. Imgur needs to be stepping up so that users can tailor the experience they want.
Sneeje
I'm curious why you would assert something like Reddit is losing users. I'm no fan, but it's user growth has been 48ish percent since 2022. https://backlinko.com/reddit-users
emu314159127001
You can't just log on and, after a period of gaining karma, post to any big sub on r/popular. It's automodded for clickbait bots. There are still all the niche subs at least. I just mute r/pop
PragmaticPrimate
I'm not sure whether reddit is losing users. But those numbers are probably inflated as there are a shitload of bots flooding a lot of subreddits.
DemSumBigAssRidges
It's a lot of alt accounts used to spam/troll and bot accounts used for the same thing.
eldorel
Take a look at the logged in/out users chart. That section where logged in users consistently exceeded logged out in 2022 was covid lockdown
eldorel
Somehow Q4 2023 suddenly showed massive growth. At the same time they were filing an IPO... And AI interaction bots started flooding subs.
eldorel
Many people share the opinion that the 'humans' are leaving reddit and training AI is the source of most posts and comments.
Sneeje
So again, I'm interested in analysis and data, not "some people say". I get that can be a burden or inconvenient in making a point, but I've seen too many things asserted as common knowledge that are completely undermined by data. I genuinely don't care if reddit is or is not losing users.
Frogblender
Reddit won't die. It gets priority in google searches for the enormous range and detail of things real people are talking about, very often problems.
yoyo42
People _were_ talking about. Increasingly now subs are so tightly modded you can't post on them or the bot detection for things like 'inciting violence' is so sensitive you can't say anything. I commented about knives vs guns on a post about a knife at a gunfight and got a permanent ban from that sub...
Targe0
People said that about Digg as well.
albinomuntjac
Yeah But those people directed there from search results will just get the info they need and leave; there’s no motivation to stay around. Reddit will eventually turn into a rotting husk of what it once was, filled with bots posting & talking to one another in the main subs and bots & ad agencies posting the same posts but under different accounts in the p*rn subs. A lot of both are already happening.
Frogblender
I don't go into the meme reddits. I visit reddits based on games or something practical and as long as the activity the reddit is focused on continues, the reddit will keep getting activity.
DukeSliscus
Reddit has been slowly rotting into a corpo echo chamber for a while and soon it will be populated with bots and PR teams for whatever media the subreddit is about.
Trustrup
It will get overtaken by AI crap answers, that will start to hallucinate.
emu314159127001
You can dowmvote, which hides the comment after a very low threshold (like-4 or something) yes, you can bot, but there's TONS of comments, the mod threshold is lower
Trustrup
I meant in the search itself, my top result on Google is now AI unless I disable it, which most normal people don’t do. And that AI harvest from Reddit, so in the beginning it will give decent results. It not like you can use the Reddit search function, because that sucks balls.
emu314159127001
oh yeah, even the now shittified google search:reddit.com is better than reddit search. no idea why they're trying to tank that site so hard. every change they make is for the worse. they actually made it so you can't see post creator in your feed. some bullshit reason like "oh, people like it more um, uh, uncluttered, yeah, that's the ticket." really, mf? or is it so you can bot the shit out of us.
Frogblender
No it won't. You go to reddit to get answers from people who have the stuff or have done the thing. You want to know what size orings and how to take apart this mechanism, maybe a diagram, you don't want some guesswork robot mashing together some garbage for you. That's also what makes reddit a goldmine for "AI" to leech information from because there's so much real and varied information.
sundaymondayhippyday
We what function does Imgur serve? are we just this….
Trustrup
Except you search on Google for the answer, or the masses do, and Google now has an AI at the top harvesting from Reddit, and in the beginning it will give decent answers, so people don’t have to go to Reddit. And it’s not like people can use the Reddit search function, because more useless search function has seldom existed.
BayazTheBenevolent
For me it's the insane brigading that really breaks the experience. Some people here lead small armies of trolls, acting like they're really big fish. Oh, and the constant 'community events' aka data harvesting efforts. Oh, and the untagged political and furry spam lately.
Bunghold
Ok but the furry spam is a POSITIVE.
prosper020
The “community” events are a killjoy for me. It’s random, constant, and insincere. People seem to not care about the event and just want a digital sticker that didn’t exist until that day. The announcement of the event always comes a a full screen blocking pop up often times 5-10 minutes into me browsing memes. Middle of a dump that I’m enjoying, boom random interruption about how it’s dry cleaning bag day. It’s also divisive with its arbitrary teams, and leads to lame spam posts flooding frontP
DesperateDunn365
It's the events that makes me look on here less and less. As soon as there's a star wars day or something else (star wars was just an example) I just don't bother for the day. The snowball fights and acorn stuff is worse as it makes it a write off for a week or so as its then just posts about the thing itself. And tbe furry thing is weird as well. As per a tip on here I've started blocking the user posts when I see them but there's so many of them.

Pyroofdoomandcheese
You can block people which works for a few weeks, then imgur "unblocks" them while still having them in that list, which is annoying.
Felimelinesk
But you can't downvote the shit you've blocked.
prosper020
Well, you can not see it and be happier in life, or you can hate see it to downvote it. Thats just kind of how the world works.
fallenbeelzebub
To block tags, you just gotta go into your settings. There's a section called "Block Lists" on the left side (on PC, don't know about mobile,) and from there you can add tags to block.
SayRamrod
on android it only shows blocked users list. i think older versions allowed by tag.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
That's what I do. I've got so many people blocked. Now I almost never see any pony stuff at least
Smartbutnotreally
Imgur is manufacturing engagement and has chased away authenticity.. Mods a fickle and customer support is absolutely the worst. It took me 6 months of filing service tickets to learn the reason my old account was not working was because I was banned for something, but no one could tell me what. This place isn't as cool as it used to be...
AnAverageBoxEnthusiast
pump and dump bot accounts boosting posts
captainenhancement
The mods can make anything most viral, or remove it so it’s not based solely on what you think it’s based on, actually the algorithm isn’t public at all, so it likely doesn’t represent only engagement.
NoNameFred
I would suspect that there's an element of "rate" involved, rather than pure "volume". A post that gets 200 upvotes in an hour is probably more worthy of "Most Viral" than one that gets 800 upvotes in 24 hours.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
Have it always been that way? A year or so ago most viral never has less than 1k (or around that) as far as I can recall. Interesting development
Wuz314159
300 points was the threshold for ages. But points over time could always override that. Now, I've had posts hit the front page at 50 points if it happens fast enough.

It died the moment they stopped allowing NSFW content. They sold the company and something like 70% of the user base left. I'm soooo sick of nsfw stuff being everywhere. I am glad there is option to turn it off but so much would skip through. Like I like boobs too (I'm a woman), but I don't need boobs to be everywhere I go. If I want boobs, I can go where there is boobs. I hate seeing thrist traps everywhere these days, even with nsfw settings turned off.
Xenarion
The NSFW stuff mostly impacted private posts, which didn't contribute to the community per say. Public posts were already censored.
DonaldTrumpsFlaccidHairpiece
Yes and no. There was plenty of stuff posted that would be considered NSFW, but was allowed, just not downright porn. Then came the crackdown when they were trying to sell/selling to our current owners. Some rules have been slightly relaxed, but nowhere near where it use to be, and everyone already left back when the mass censoring happened.

Tumblr?
Druidhunter77
tumblr is a name I haven’t thought of in ages. Didn’t they *also* ban NSFW content and then collapse
BayazTheBenevolent
Very briefly, but they went back on it. Today it's probably the only social media that allows for long form text posts, images, NSFW and provides mostly Nazi free experience. I never liked it much but I am glad to see it going strong.
Druidhunter77
Huh. Neat. Guess I’ll go look at it later
Xenarion
Apparently it's back? Or so I've heard, I haven't verified. That being said, it still has a reputation of being a buggy mess. On the plus side, the most toxic part of Tumblr moved to Twitter a long time ago, so it's a better place. AND you control what you see by who you follow, unlike Imgur's single front page.
Druidhunter77
This is good. Guess I’m breaking back into my old tumblr account later
ForeskinOmelette
Sane people have fled. Political spam and the people who post it are in 100% control of the site now. Mods tried enforcing tags to help allow users to opt out of seeing it, political spam crowd just pouted and circumvented tags by adding (even more) accounts to their army and drove even more users to places with better content controls. Imgur has no choice but to lower the threshold of viral to 50 upvotes otherwise nothing would make it out. Non-politics posts are taking 4-6 hours to even get 50
MisterLemons
They touted "this needs to be seen" but forgot to factor in that nobody is anchored here. I've found myself on YouTube shorts when I need my daily dose of escape. The group of sanctimonious, dramatic, histrionic, theatric, pharisaic, obnoxious assholes shot themselves in the foot converting the place into an echo chamber and boasting 'take it or leave it'.
They villianize *everyone* that doesn't worship their narrative then recycle their lack of success into more propaganda. Like a religion...
mrsdowneyjr
One of the reasons I like imgur vs YT shorts is there's no algorithm and I get a little of everything but at this point a little of everything posted here means news, cosplay, news, furry, news, rhm etm... Ad nauseum so it's back to YouTube
Tragopan
This. I stopped using both imgur and Facebook due to political spam. The furry/pony/NSFW stuff that is posted on imgur I welcome. It's a drop in the bucket compared to the political spam. Facebook is even worse with the blatant Fascism, lies and Russian misinformation and propaganda. In fact, I don't use social media at all anymore. My usage is back to pre-internet levels. All because of politics.
AlmightyElephant
Also the fact that there's no easy way to block tags. At least not on mobile, I dunno what those PC folk are up to.
I know the way exists, but it's such a fuckin pain in the hole that it feels more like a feature they don't want people to use, but put in so they could say it exists.
I'm not so cynical that I genuinely believe that's what it is, but it's so poorly designed I can't think of a good reason for it to be literally anything else
Ebo352
So, where have all the heros gone?
Roland2403
I'm pretty surprised to see this on Imgur. Truth
knotch2
I completely agree. And if you comment something sane or share your point of view it's down it's by one person and their cronies. Two wrongs don't make a right... Just because one side is cheating doesn't mean the other side gets to justify cheating. One side is like furry furry, and the other side is like yo this is weird and then the "yo this is weird" are told to fuck off and donate to furries for America or some shit.
letgoofmyweiner
They're asleep right now. When they wake up and see this, every comment that dares question them will have received dozens of downvotes and replies like "NOOOO, Imgur got bad because the mods screwed it up" or "ads" or literally any excuse other than their spamming of content (and making it unavoidable) that VERY few people are interested in seeing here.
crazyspelling
Just sayin', back when there were boobs on here, there were a lot fewer political posts. Correlation not causation, perhaps...

I jist left 9Gag amd moved here. 9Gag is much worse now. Completely destroyed by bots. Worse thing is that 9Gag is selling old inactive accounts to botfarms. Its a shitshow.
Falcrist
There was always a pretty substantial amount of political stuff. It probably increases engagement. I feel like the drop in traffic is being driven by the removal of most NSFW content and reddit now hosting its own images. Not to mention the incessant advertising...
cosonfused
Even when they use tags, they abuse it. they often add "featured" tags to their political posts. One moment you're browsing the "cute kittens" featured day and suddenly see a post ranting about Trump or Musk.
CommentMalone
What places have better content controls??
WaxDragon
I feel the thirsty stuff is just as prevalent. Politics and hot people, that's all we get
Squaba13
Where have they fled to?
PandaSan
Where are these other places with better content of which you speak?
ForeskinOmelette
Reddit does a much better job in specific subreddits, but I haven't taken the time to figure out how to get a huge influx of posts that I don't even know I wanted to see (the way imgur used to be just anything and everything). Subreddits can and do put strict rules on no politics as well, but some of them aren't policed well and have been taken over just like imgur.
OnlyByMoonlight
This is why we can't have nice things.
Battlesoldier8618
Is there a good alternative to imgur?
wadatahmydamie
In the case of the person you’re responding to, his go-to is 8Chan. He operates around 20 accounts (hundreds, if you count the banned ones) that he uses to try and manipulate voting on comments and posts, all with the same end goal.
He’s also posted on this thread under different sock puppet accounts.
ElizabethToy000
Doesn't help that the mods are also heavily political as well. The strong arm of the left pushed a lot out...
Fairemont
Uh huh...
Ryebread91
What are the places they're going to?
Wuz314159
4chan
Ryebread91
eggmuffin
It's weird seeing people complain about how a repressed public uses what means are at their disposal to cry foul and spread awareness of the injustice they suffer.
People complained about that in 1938, too. Which is why my national curriculum includes teaching us why that's a really stupid thing to do.
It turns out that we can learn from history! Who knew?!
pip1
I understand your frustration, but as I remember it there was a loooot of 4chan-like racism and misogyny in the before times as well. That user-segment seems to have largely left over the last couple of years.
wadatahmydamie
Bingo. You couldn’t go three posts on the front page without one of those attack chopper memes, among many other problems.
Imgur started gravitating away from fascism, but when the owners decided they weren’t going to allow nipples any more, that was the beginning of the end. Now they’re trying to sell the site, so it’ll get even worse
pip1
Additionally, the recent corporate business-strategy resulting in censorship to cater for advertisers and meaningless "community events" to pump up engagement doesnt help either
Jerz77
I just browsed through your last dozen or so posts and none of them even had tags (including your own brand of idiotic political "humor" posts). Not sure wtf you're whining about when you're actually an active part of the problem yourself. "SaNe PeOpLe HaVe FlEd."
ForeskinOmelette
I'm sorry you feel one edited picture of a politician out of hundreds of posts constitutes me participating in the political circle jerk. And no, I don't tag my posts. Because I don't post content that (as per a mod comment) is by 'far and away the most complained about topic on imgur'. In the context of my original comment, tagging is meant to allow people to opt OUT of material, NOT so people can curate their feeds to see more lightning or egg-to-adult animal posts.
Felimelinesk
Ouch, that burn !
Wuz314159
Delicate little snowflakes can't ignore things they don't like. They have to send undesirables to a hidden camp far away. . . Sounds familiar. Ò_o
eggmuffin
Oof. Seems like you struck a nerve. 😮💨
Truth hurts.
ThatsFactual
No one is being send anywhere, that is a weird fucking comparison......
If you want to force your political views on other, then you are the Nazi.
eggmuffin
The US operates extraterritorial concentration camps. The US has a loyalty police. The US has legislation empowering that agency to incarcerate citizens without due process.
But we should take your word that none of these things are ever actually utilized?
Bullshit.
ThatsFactual
You wrote it like blocking a tag was the same as sending someone to a concentration camp, which it isn't.
eggmuffin
No, that's just something you say to not engage with the point that if you're not going to do literally anything at all to rectify the sad state of affairs, quit bitching about those only doing the absolute bare minimum.
That's counterproductive.
It can be read as malicious.
Corrodias
I think a lot of this angst could have been averted if Imgur had just made tags mandatory. It never has. It would of course have invited a new kind of angst in fearing whether one needs to mark their post as "political" or not, for example, a post talking about a city repairing a bridge.
MisterLemons
madsc13ntist
odd, it's as if suddenly everyone wants to talk about what's killing them instead of reposting shit they saw on reddit.
I'm sure people love to look at daisies somewhere on the internet and I hope you find it. but people NEED to talk about this shit right NOW. 🤷♂️🕯️🙏
drinkthederpentine
Talking is fucking meaningless and just yet more slacktivism. It sure is fucking annoying though.
madsc13ntist
I'm not saying who cast votes for whom, but this "but politics AREN'T boobs! no matter how hard they impact my life. they just aren't..." is PRECISELY the attitude that ghosted the ballot box and drove us into this tree.
fun fact: I FULLY hate this site when it is overrun with horny 40 year olds acting PERMANENTLY 12 that attempt to steer conversations away from substance at any opportunity. it's what I hate about the internet the most. I started coming more for people figuring out what's up.
MisterLemons
There are nearly 8 billion non-Americans that have access to this site too. Your definition of "substance" is their example of 'garbage'. People aren't engaging in politics here, they're practicing banter.
The fact that the constitution of your country has been bypassed several times but you still have access to Internet because you haven't been jailed for rioting proves how far you and everyone else will actually go. You don't get to judge people for not wanting to hear it every waking second.
madsc13ntist
pardon. our. screaming.
we'll leave you to get back to the VERY IMPORTANT furry porn or BULLSHIT manga of the week that matters SO MUCH more than other people in survival mode.
MisterLemons
Once again, you're factoring out the rest of the inhabitants of earth. We all have problems and we're all set on solving them. 1,100 people starve to death in Africa every day, more are murdered in genocide? Not a peep. But "oh no, nazis are coming after my genders!" First world problems sure are loud...
As for the former: the furry crap and manga are the direct result of the *incessant bullshit* that has been plaguing this site for a decade and drove everyone else away, including MisterSavage.
johnblood616
Boo fucking hoo
MisterLemons
johnblood616
"Look at me, I'm a jackass on the internet who makes assumptions about people and must use memes because I'm too stupid to use words."
MisterLemons

johnblood616
Thanks for proving me right, dipshit.
Someshithead241
You could look at any comment section, for any post, and there is about a 70% chance there is someone relating it back to trump. Even if its about nothing political at all, it's a compulsion.
Falcrist
Ironically, you're the first comment to mention trump. Or maybe it's apropos instead of ironic.
I think the bigger factors in imgur's decline are the removal of NSFW content, reddit hosting images now, and the crazy amounts of advertising.
ExistentialDreadlocks
MisterLemons
Use this
sme2812
I have SO many political posters blocked who don't use tags...
ExplosionFish
Same…
ForeskinOmelette
I've seen in the comments people that have reached the max of 1000 blocked users and they still get politics in their feed. I wonder if the spammers ever consider the indisputable fact that they killed this place with their rage.
PanPot608
I doubt they are aware enough, they just want everyone to be as miserable as they are.
aducksayswhat
I'm one of those with a full block list, it's long been "first in, first out" to make space for new ones that annoy me. I just assume spammers treat account as disposable, and if I unblock one which is still active then it'll quickly get blocked again
ExistentialDreadlocks
I don't care though. My block list is nearly full and I'm done asking politely.
SnarfyMcSnarferson
ForeskinOmelette
This is fantastic
DrFlukeHawkins
It's insanely bad. Post election everyone started crying if you called out lack of tags. Like they had some right to make you see their content. And if you said anything there was instantly 20 downvotes
Hyndisfox
I suspect some of that may have been botting because political campaigns did spend a lot of money on social media, including on Reddit to promote specific posts. But also a lot of it is young, terminally online political zealots who will upvote, share, like posts all day long, but won't actually cast a vote in a ballot box on election day. The 2024 results are proof of that.
cardinal29
Maybe not /r/somethingiswrong2024
Hyndisfox
First off, no, the election was NOT stolen. Secondly I'm muting you because you're a weird conspiracy theorist.
Madscribe
I'm still dwelling in the bowels of hell because I requested such.
Lontri
And if you pointed out that some people can't handle the political spam due to severe mental health reasons, or that like half of the users aren't that interested in US politics because we're not from the US, the zealots would just tell us to leave or only browse meme tags if we don't want to see their spam. ironic that they think that others should browse by tags, but then asking them to use tags means that they're being silenced.
ebonyfaery
Yep! I got called a nazi so many times lol
wadatahmydamie
4 times out of 5, the people complaining about tags are on a post that’s tagged “current events” instead of whatever it is they wanted on there.
ForeskinOmelette
We get to make up statistics now. 99,999 times out of 100,000 people just scroll past and don't make a complaint at all even though they tried to opt out of seeing it but couldn't because the troll squad intentionally makes the political spam unavoidable.
wadatahmydamie
Yeah? And how many of them are bitchy edgelords who post their own untagged shit?
I’ve found at least one on this thread.
ForeskinOmelette
You're just cute as a button. I bet you got all those fancy internet points by being sweet on people here, didn't you?
SnarfyMcSnarferson
That's the reason I started blocking users that post nothing but politics. I swore off Facebook 5 years ago for that reason
TeamSpicyTacos
I did not want to, but gave in and blocked political posters and uhhhh, the odd influx of furry porn.
DrFlukeHawkins
The furry shit is wild. Its like some flipped a switch
greatbam
We shouldn't have to do this BS. People need to down vote stuff but imgur specifically needs to start enforcing tags on politic posts.
If they don’t want to do it users should be able to tag posts that aren't tagged.
Raoul97533
And people just claimed the only reason you get sick of seeing the same post spammed over and over again, is because you support the other side...
MisterLemons
I just want to see memes and cats.
"You're a nazi!"
ebonyfaery
My entire experience for weeks
Someshithead241
People claim any reason you don't 100% agree with them on everything and join the hive mind is because you support the other side. They are deluded into an echo chamber.
You literally cannot criticise your own side anymore without people losing their fucking minds and that is a dangerous thing that is only going to make it spiral even worse.
Vamp13
This place is infowars but for the left basically. It's insane. Can we get back to cats and memes or even better cat memes?
Hyperboi
Division is the point. 90% of what we're exposed to online is there with the express purpose of soliciting a strong emotional response. Agitated people engage, which makes money. Keep people agitated, keep making money. What ever happened to "Don't feed the trolls"?
Someshithead241
On larger platforms like YouTube people will see different comments based on their political leanings, as the algorithm feeds them shit to make them mad.
Deadflower394857
Dude just keep scrolling. How does it hurt you to see something you don't like for a split second. How do you survive in the world?
greatbam
We all got plenty of political BS already if we wanted others political BS in our lives we know where to find it.
DahPrincess
Because it's not a split second. It's a dozen posts in a row every time. It used to be "just block political tags if you don't wanna see it". But I've blocked tags. I've blocked several accounts. At this point I mostly just go through posts of people I follow. And EVERY headline/title I have to read pushes me further from sanity. Maybe I'm soft or sensitive, but I just don't see why anyone would want to spend that much energy getting pissed at problems they can't do anything about anyway.
Deadflower394857
Unfortunately you're gonna have to find ways to protect your brain from the awfulness of this world, because it's not gonna stop being awful for a long time. Gratefulness can really help. If your personal life hasn't been affected by politics yet, that's something to be grateful for. Also breathing exercises can be good.
Deadflower394857
I'm sorry about that, that sounds hard. There are often things we can do actually. Mutual aid is one. You don't need to get pissed to problem solve.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
Got any alternatives? I'm not enjoying imgur as I once did
nuail
.
sillyDad
.
TheWhiteBarry
Fire the mods, bring back the tits and memes. Make imgur great again 🫡
hiyesthisissatan
I like to know of there are any reasonable alternatives too. Imgur sucks now.
AlmightyElephant
Pixelfed is an... alternative? It's still real early days for them and I think getting into it requires a little too much tech savvy. Like it's not hard, it's just not as easily accessible to the average user, and atm whenever I scroll through it's basically like OLD instagram where it's just people posting photos they took of like, the sunset or their breakfast and shit like that.
Not a whole lot of memes on there that I've seen... but I cbf learning to server hop so maybe that's my problem.
Corrodias
If you want to avoid people mentioning anything "political"? Some Reddit forums, maybe.
mercyPandaRunner
It's less about "mentioning anything political", it's the site drowning specifically in twitter screenshots about Trump and people sharing every litle fart of that high yield fart factory. If it was an international mix of politics, i could accept that. But it's Trump took a shit, Trump tweeted shit, Trump said shit, Trump Trump Trump Trump Trump.
Major election in other countries? Barely makes the front page. Republican Janitor General of Buttfuckscreek, Idaho tweeted some shit? Most viral.
Corrodias
Then Bluesky or some Mastodon instance may suffice as well, as you somewhat curate your own experience by following specific accounts.
mercyPandaRunner
As twitter used to be, before the douche deluge. I had been thinking about Bluesky, but then, i always think that since i'm off Xitter, I'd rather not replace it. Less social media is probably better.
ForeskinOmelette
Nah, I just browse reddit for specific topics these days unless I want to entertain myself by poking the bear here. They get delightfully angry when you call them out. Then the stalking. Like you, I do not enjoy imgur the way I used to, but life, uh, finds a way and lemonade can be made from lemons.
DontKnowTheSource
Spent about 3 hours last night trying to find a replacement for imgur and I just kept being brought to direct image hosting sites or reddit. There's really nowhere else sadly and I don't have the knowledge time or power to build my own
Hyndisfox
I solve the stalking problem by never checking comment replies. I'm tired of the hate and angst, and people get so mean when they're called out for posting spam or misinformation. I post my comment and let it be. I've said my piece.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
I've considered just poking the bear for fun. But when I see that the post have 85 upvotes and 5 comments I just think "what's the point" and just move along. I wonder if it's the same with "ordinary" comments as well
MisterLemons
Tried a social experiment and managed to hammer a point home with this one.

Here, for future use:
crazyspelling
The white text on light background is really rough.

Honestly? Get off the internet. It's a sinking ship at this point.
dwarfinathonginacaskinthewaterwoooo
are you implying i should get a ship?
Revan1138
I'm considering moving to the wilderness
ArchaeoEejit
It's been a long time since I've seen anyone say 'get off the internet'. Getting flashbacks of my Ma wanting to use the landline phone. Probably good advice that a lot of people should but won't follow.
GlutenFreeCocaineWaffles
Been doing my best to slowly phase it out. This site has been the only ̶s̶o̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ interest media site I use for a few years now, and somewhat sparingly. It's been excellent for my mental health. The rest of the internet meanwhile is either disappearing or turning into slop. Even torrent networks are disappearing faster than you can blink.
SuperfluousMeh
I haven't torrented in a long time because I haven't really needed to. But that's sad news. The internet was such a powerful tool for so many things, it isn't what it once was.
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
True. But if I did, I wouldn't be able to ask you for the recipe
Thanshin
One large block of ice, is the traditional one.
rmgurfrommars
But then how would you get a 500 page dissertation about the recipe authors' personal lives?
Lillyily
Yes, clearly JUST politics posts do this. Not the furry stuff, the pony stuff, the softcore onlyfans ads, the [day of the week] [fetish], the "look at my cosplay I'll just advertise my links here", juuuuust the politics posts. I'm not defending politics and people should be able to look at content they want to, but I'm hardly going to pretend only THOSE posts don't use appropriate tags.
livingonagiantfireball
It start to look a lot like instagram now, what a shame.
Xenarion
The pony stuff was pretty contained until recently. The mild fetish stuff was more a selling point than a detractor. I feel the swarming of politics and doom scrolling is really what drove people away.
catsnroombas
I admit I left all social media ten years ago to get away from political doom scrolling and have been working my way back into some of it - today I'll generally pick reddit over imgur because Jesus fuck I can't know every awful thing at once and thigh-highs just aren't a great replacement for the kind of stuff we used to see. I need some Disney princesses as 20's flappers or *something* in there.
DahPrincess
Personally speaking, it literally is JUST politics. I've used imgur less and less the more political it's gotten. I've tried using the app features to get a more tailored experience. It sucks because I used to be able to spend an hour plus a day on here looking at meme dumps, cute animals, Twitter screenshots, etc. Now I go days or weeks without opening it because I hate how submersed I get in the negativity of it all. But hey, negative headlines get more views, so what's gonna change?
Hyndisfox
Agreed. There's more Trump in user submitted than on FOX News. There's more nazi related posts in user submitted than on the History Channel in the 1990's. I'm here for the cute cat gifs, delicious foods, boobs, ponies, machine gifs, and anything not related to politics. I'm here to escape politics.
DahPrincess
Even the "good guys" on fp get tiring. Sorry, I literally can't keep getting fired up about every atrocity the "other guys" commit. Even the good stuff that I'd like to see is posted in a negative light, because it gets more clicks. It's exhausting, I do enough of it in my real day to day life, and, as you stated, I'm here to escape that. I can't even handle reading headlines. Call me soft/sensitive, but I find that kind of content to be toxic to my mental state.
metroidmariomega
At least those people actually tag their posts so they're easy to avoid.
The politics people (and bots) rarely tag their content. As for the bots, there are hundreds of them. Even if you directly block users several new ones will pop up within the week.
CommodusLeitdorf
The horny posting has been part of Imgur since Imgur started.
IEatYourSombrero
But I like these things.
mercyPandaRunner
But if you put the kink shit and the US politics shit together, that's already a huge chunk of this page.
The "mildly interesting" bot/spam accounts are pretty big too.
livingonagiantfireball
Thats why i downvote all that you named

iamthecomet
Also I hear the ads on mobile are out of control
Gaelwyn
I use the mobile app on Android and the only ad is just below the bottom of the post above the comments. There are also sometimes promoted posts, but those are not super common and all you have to do is swipe left to get to the next post.
iamthecomet
The powers that be gave me emerald quite a while ago but there was definitely an uptick in this pleasure with the app a couple years ago and also since then. Just repeating what I've heard.
SteelKnight
Lol, spot on to be honest, while I tend to just ignore it/scroll past it Imgur 's most viral now is either dumps of memes, softcore porn catering to various fetishes and people posting Facebook tier political memes, it's just not very compelling beyond doom scrolling even for someone who is fine with other people's fetishes and broadly agrees with the message of the Facebook tier political memes, but I imagine the fetish content is doing more to drive people away than the low tier anti-trump stu
brumbasse
The furry had a bigger influence on my dwindlu usage of imgur than the political stuff.
Randomified
I'd have left by now too if I knew where to go. But I don't know of a site that's 2016 imgur
EekumBokumEekumBokum
Tumblers kinda cool but def not big community engagement
eathotdog
2016 imgur was full of softcore porn and edglord bullshit, if that what your looking for ifunny is still around
PonyMadness
People bitch about reddit constantly, but you don't have to use the app and you can definitely filter what you see. Occasionally it'll throw something weird at you "based on your past viewing" but you can simply click on the dots and tell it to never recommend that to you again.
Randomified
I do frequent reddit. But the algorithm is mostly just showing me text and sometimes I just wanna be lazy and not read 😂 but perhaps I'll seek out some r/memes or something
Kreviathan
There's plenty of other meme sites, but they all went the follow/algorithm method. But by doing that you get targeted content and end up in your own little bubble.
I've kinda stopped using imgur in favor of discord meme channels tbh
MisterLemons
But the guy spamming furry art doesn't have sixteen accounts, fifty 'friends' with the same, entire campaigns supporting the production of bots, and literal Russians doing the same (yes, they're here to further drive a wedge and unrest).
You block less than 10 guys to get rid of the weird stuff, you gotta block *HUNDREDS* to get rid of just the career propagandists, then you gotta KEEP BLOCKING because they're being reinforced all the time.
meme2zombie
... I've got to ask at what point do you think they're "taking over" the website from "the regular people" when they're hundreds of the most active users? Like it seems to me you're just describing users posting and upvoting what they like to see same as always.
It really feels like this comment is just the skinner meme "no no, it's everyone else who's wrong" just because they're posting stuff that's not your cup of tea.
Zalm
Let me tell you, it ain't the "Russians" that are driving a wedge here. You can lay that claim at the feet of the party literally trying to make a fascist theocratic plutocracy.
ForeskinOmelette
Couldn't have said it better myself. I've seen your comments on other similar posts and you hit the nail on the head every damn time.
4etherling
I have to tirelessly block latex, cosplay, and thigh highs and more keep populating regardless. I don't have an issue with Russians on this site though. Most politics are in regards to issues we should be watching. I still get more meme dumps then anything.
kingofmachines
Politics is by far the biggest issue. All it took me to get rid of seeing furry stuff was blocking like 4 accounts. Blocked two accounts posting MLP stuff and that's all but vanished from my feed. I've blocked 8 different politics related tags and about 50 different accounts before I just gave up, and political posts are still the vast majority of what I see.
Raoul97533
At least the kink posters usually tag their post
ExistentialDreadlocks
And they don't tell you "fuck off this is important" if they don't and you ask them to.
SteveTheEgg
Or insult you for wanting a break from politics.
meme2zombie
That strawman is always such bullshit, no they "insult" you for demanding that everyone else change their behaviour and give up posting and talking about politics because YOU want a break. It's fine to want a break, healthy even, but don't demand a democratic website cater to what you want to see and only you.
ExistentialDreadlocks
Or just call you a nazi. I've had that happen too.
rossimus
The furry stuff really is getting out of control.
implosion3
I remember when that was so fringe it was more of a joke. Now people are talking about it in certain cases like an addiction they are recovering from or succumbing to. I'm not in the habit of kink shaming but goddamn there is a lot of furry/furry adjacent shit on imgur lately🫨
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
Downvoted by the furries I see 😂
rossimus
Lol yeah probably. Means I'm probably onto something.
zombiejedediah
I'm blocking pony stuff. There's too much of it, but apparently Imgur loves it.
I'm here for politics because mainstream media doesn't cover the protests and aren't doing anything other than sane washing 47.
Sure, #politics. If it makes the ostriches happy.
IHateToTurnUpTheVolumeOfMyTvBecauseMyCatIsSnoring
Nothing ostrich about it. The rest of the world uses Imgur as well, and there's no need to be force fed material about the shitshow 247
VaultGirl69
I'm the opposite. I vote every time, but our current internal political environment was not doing my brain any favors. And I hate seeing that orange morons face, or crappy political memes that look like they belong on Facebook. That and half the political posts that gain any traction don't have sources, which is a waste of my time. When everyone's okay with kids getting gunned down at school, the nation (not the people) feels like a lost cause.
SuperfluousMeh
The MLP stuff didn't used to be such a problem when there was a more active user base, most of it was kept in user sub. I am tired of it, too.
MisterLemons
AP and Reuters cover literally everything you want to see before social media regurgitates it in crayon and omits half of the story. You're seeking 'facts' in a public environment with zero credibility.
You don't come here for the story, you come here for the narrative and because you know you'll hear your opinion coming out of other people's mouths, hence the "ostrich" quip.
drinkthederpentine
Exactly.
zombiejedediah
That would be true if I only followed Imgur for news.
But, hey: enjoy your furries on a dying site
ExistentialDreadlocks
Equally, enjoy patting yourself on the back on a dying site.
