Also, when they caught up with him, he was tackled, and one person pulled his hair briefly, but another member of the crowd stepped in to protect him. So he was hurt, mildly, but no lasting damage and his ego was probably hurt more than his body was.

So at the mark of 2:07 left on this video you see a woman run up and spray him. She gets less than 2 feet away from his face with her arm as she sprays. From what I can find, even small bottles are effective from 3.35' away, so she was within effective spraying distance. It definitely wasn't the worst spraying ever, but I think it counts as him getting sprayed.

"The paradox of tolerance" is an actual actual philosophical category/consideration, not just a vulgar (i.e. common, not offensive) expression, so I think they're referring to that philosophical thought experiment explicitly, rather than an arbitrary use of paradox. You're right though, it's not really a paradox, given the parameters required for the persistence of tolerance.
