Me too! My brother and cousins were so much better at all of it than I was. I played with some stupid game that was like the Sims with one man in a pre-made/furnished house. It was boring. I liked it. I also played text adventures.

I never played Winter Games, but I played Summer Games a lot. They were all very hard. Lode Runner and Miner 2049er were more my speed. And all the Infocom games of course.

Can't find anything on the RRP of the monitors, but the C64 launched at $595 and I think a 1541 disk drive was initially $499. Within two years the price of the computer had dropped dramatically though, and even at launch I doubt the cost of a C64, 1541 disk drive and 1701/1702 colour monitor cost thousands.
The C64 was famous initially for offering a luxurious amount of memory (all of 64K!) at a really cheap price, considering that 48K machines from Apple and IBM really were costing thousands.

The Apple IIe came out in 1984 and cost was $1395 then. Adjust for inflation it would come out to about $4100.
I don't think this included things like the computer dust covers for the keyboard and CPU, printer, joystick, additional drives, and all the other fun stuff.

Our old Apple IIe had the green and black monitor and the 16 color monitor, RGB came out after. The Great American Cross-Country Road Race was fun with color.

Tapes ruled in Ireland and the UK. The day I got a disk drive was a very big one for me. I didn't care that the C64 was obsolete at that point, I loved everything about it.

It sounded off to me, so went and checked what it was on the version I played (Apple II), originally thinking it had to be just the sound font. But nope, the Apple II version of Winter Games has the Epyx anthem sped up quite a bit.

That whole era, especially once I started running a BBS in the early 80s up until the mid 90s, will always be amongst my most fondest of memories.
Computers were a lot more fun when they were just being used by hobbyists. The Internet becoming popular really dragged everything down, even more so once everything had to be financially motivated. :(
People were more than happy to create and share things without having to get paid for it.

2000s and VERY early 2010s were peak internet. The power to do serious things but everything still felt like it was by computer nerds for computer nerds (at least in the 2000s, in the nineties even a text editor was exciting). How it inspired dreams back in the day like almost anyone could do something that mattered.
Now it's by suits for mass audiences, everything is trying to sell your data, and even being a serious YouTuber is now called influencer and almost nobody can make it big.

I remember spending hours making a custom galaxy for my BBS. Making little islands/clusters of sectors that looped around themselves and populated with nice ports, all in order to give my players something to really fight over, instead of just random assaults. :D
The debugging was a nightmare though. But I was a teen at the time, and a nerdy one at that (now way, right?!), so it's not like I didn't have the free time.
