The thing we care about safe food. Treating 'number of recalls' as a reliable proxy for food safety is flirting with Goodhart's law.
If this becomes a big deal, you could very well have zero recalls next year, and I don't think anyone would enjoy the consequences.

And thats just 2026, between August and December 2025, there was a recall on something every few days it felt like. I had just come out of a bone marrow transplant and had a super restricted diet because of it so I had to watch what I did eat very carefully, and seeing a new recall on something every few days was super disheartening.

Dude... go do some work. It absolutely is inspections. Not JUST inspection but inspections are a big part.
They not only cut the number of inspectors they had but they cut the people who track the results of the inspections almost entirely.
They CHOSE this. They decided to NOT track this stuff in spite of the fact that Congress told them to to begin with.

You can have the best regulations in the world but if there's only 3 people enforcing those regulations for an entire country the size of the US.

I've been senior operations in food supply chain for a long time (Canadian firms though). That is horrifying, and given that my first degree included toxicology and some food science, and that I've managed supply chains as sensitive as biotic pharma or fresh sushi, I can promise you that ALL of the compliance is at the level of the worst quality person employed at a company. A low margin company...expect the shit to FIREHOSE!

Yes, in 2025 the number of recalls shot up over 15% with the volume of those recalls growing by over 200%. The numbers for this year are looking even bigger but the data is incomplete as the year is not over yet.
