This will likely just be lost and forgotten in ubersub but it’s worth asking. Since Imgur is literally the best community going and knows how to do everything, i’m calling upon you to try and either explain this or to make a gif/diagram of a motorised, rotating prayer mat. We ARE on imgur so it would also make sense to equip it with a few lasers and maybe some cats too. Have fun and continue scrolling! FP EDIT: *witty joke about sending nudes* + now we’re here let’s make it happen!!!
Alkyone
In the worst of condition, a muslim may delay prayer to a later time under such condition as a travel, I believe.

I asked my Muslim friend the same question, and he said that he would face Earth, but he said he would just have to try his best.

That's actually an interesting theological question. I mean, there had to be questions adressed concerning the height of the Burj Khalifa.

Don't try to act innocent, like you were actually curious. There are ways to ask without the remarks about "motorized rotating prayer mats".

Exactly, this guy wasn't really asking a question, he was probably just being a dick and got called out on it.

First you have to explain that the earth isn't flat. Then that they're pissin' in the wind!
RealScienceMan
Ok but during Ramadan you have to fast from sun up to sun down, what do you do if you're on a spaceship outside the solar system.
ZeusHairyButt
Then you follow the timezone in mekka. Same if muslims are far to the north like norway or sweden
RealScienceMan
That's what some people are adopting, but not what you're supposed to do though. Lots of Muslims in the north still do local dawn and dusk.

The term racist has largely supplanted the more broad term xenophobic when talking about different cultures. So not in common parlance.

In Andy Weir's new book Artemis the protagonist's devout Muslim father invents a sort of A-Frame on the Moon on which you can hang your rug

Because the Moon is tidally locked, the Earth stays in the same place in the sky, so by hanging the mat you simply kneel and pray against it

About 17,000 mph different, though. Mecca likely won't blow past you and change directions in five mins if you are on most planes.

You are missing the point. The inflight prayer guide from Malaysia Airlines states that you should sit in your seat and pray.

I used to think that, but it’s only fasting during the day. It’s a lot like lent. Trying to be closer to god. Then they have a feast.

My friend won't fast if she's on her period during that time. I told her I was telling Allah on her because she's cheating.

That they named stars, muslim sailing is entirely based on greek findings and chinese ones later on.

Prayer energy travels at about 0.7C, and will curve toward the nearest compatible prayer sink, since it can circle the earth in either

which would still not be that lossy except it is far more likely to pass through high prayer impedance areas, or areas with a lot of holy

No hate required. You just made a twat out yourself.
waxy365
Who cares? Or did you want to sound cool?
smittywerbenjaegermanJ
A lot of people do sadly, including yours truly who responded to my post
smittywerbenjaegermanJ
You*
waxy365
My point was that you randomly said you were a former Muslim, which had nothing to do with the topic.
Wakzo
Yeah hate it when people say "as a blah blah" when no one really gives a shit
Flexpert
Ahh, that makes sense. Theoretically however, if they were on a spacecraft of sorts which was rotating at a significant speed, enough for it
CmfMttnPpl
What if they were light years away from earth?
HarryPotterGeek
In that case, I believe that doing best despite circumstances beyond their control would be sufficient. The intent is the important part.
HarryPotterGeek
Also, Islam allows for exceptions when needed, like pregnant/menstruating women don't fast during ramadan, tho some make up the time later.
gaaaaalavant
I think in this case, it's the thought that counts.
Swiggy1957
now you can tell that pamphlet dealer the facts, and show your question was serious
WellAckchually
It's already been covered that it doesn't matter, but the ISS maintains a constant orientation with respect to the earth.
WellAckchually
It's necessary for many of its experiments.

Everybody is just posting random shit. Here is the story from an actual muslim astronaut: https://www.wired.com/2007/09/mecca-in-orbit/

Nice job
thedudesgonecrazy
Thats a dam good and logical read.

The very end raises good questions. A lot of religious practices are based on earth. Would you just use earth days on another planet?
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
Asimov's Foundation universe uses Earth clock and calendar as standard, but each planet has local clock and calendar, too.

Thanks! This is was super interesting.
RenegadeSci
That was interesting!
Flexpert
to be moving too much that it wasn’t facing earth constantly.
redrockNOLAblues
Of course, every time he begins to pray, the pilot rotates the ISS. Jerk.
herbalteaa
You estimate and pray. It's not that big of a deal as the view is Allah is forgiving and intent matters a lot.
waitwasthatreal
Yeah, but we don’t use spacecrafts that do anyway.
DukeDarkwood
A day on Jupiter is about ten hours. They have to get in five sessions a day. Fortunately, at that distance, facing the Sun is roughly
DukeDarkwood
equivalent to facing Earth. The trick would be if you had any sessions at night, where you couldn't see the Sun.
HonestCommentFarmer
From what I understand, the ISS is "tidally locked" to the earth, such that if you look out a window at Earth, as it orbits that window will
HonestCommentFarmer
always look out at Earth.
Retr0Futurist
If it's rotating that much they're going to be too busy violently vomiting to do much else
stupidfuntime
ISS circles in ~90min, the prayer takes 3-5 so at real speeds it’s not much of an issue
ouknowdeway
If u start the prayer facing earth or something close then it's fine
ouknowdeway
Some Muslims think that even on Earth you have to exactly pray towards the exact angle of the kabba , but you just have to ...
secondtalon
Some Christians think Jesus gives a shit about homosexuals. Every religion has it's fuckshits.
ouknowdeway
Pray facing the direction of mekkah , example youre in new york you face east south
wolfhair
They just have to try their best. As in most religions, their God is forgiving so long as they try their hardest to do the right thing.
awildcharmander
If only people were like that...
TheGreatandAlmightyNooblord
Forgiving unless... you're gay, leave the religion, question god or a hundred other exceptions in which you must be killed.
FutureFriedman
I like that the Quarran forgives muslims if they eat non-halal foods if they repent after finding out. Good Guy God.
faptasticvoyage
Except he wants them to murder Jews. So you know...not so good.
thjoth
"I gotchu brah." - Allah, probably.
Kangadilla
Also, doing what you want then apologizing later seems to get gods forgiveness as well. So in reality they could pray however they'd like.
ilovecake
That’s like a kid knowingly taking a cookie when they aren’t supposed to have sweets before dinner, and asking for forgiveness.
boshbashbish
Doesn’t work like that ‘cause the intention (from the way you worded it) is to purposefully commit w/e sin thinking you can get away with it
awildcharmander
Yeah I'm not even religious and I know it doesn't work this way. You don't just have to apologize, you have to actually *be sorry*
5tarTrek
and also doesn't exist.

I'm an theist. Go away dude

Autocorrect *atheist

Found the athiest.

If there was proof of Gods, there would be no belief. Belief is one of the very core elements in any religion.
Flexpert
this is very true, i’m not sure what all the downvotes are for...
bctycho
While belief plays a key role in Religion (and sometimes in science), Religion is more of a lifestyle, think of the devout christian who, in

As someone who vapes, I'm offended that you didn't shit on my hobby too.

Ok, I'll bite. How do you know? Or do you like..just believe gods don't exist?
5tarTrek
I don't believe unicorns or Santa exist either, but I don't KNOW that. Stop lying to yourself.
ContainedShrim
You probably dont want to talk to that guy about it, but ill say that i dont believe gods exist. Is that really a crazy concept?
GaySocialistLiberalMuslimCommieAtheist
I will explain my reasoning If you wish, all major religions claim their gods/creation story is correct. (Note does not need conflict 1/2
