I getcha, but those farms that burned provided the only viable option for employment after the war. Punishing the south also left all the former slaves without an infrastructure to make a living. There's a lot of nuance not taught in school history classes.
Don't take this as excusing the south, either. I just want the truth to take priority; neither side fought that war for civil rights.

I have to disagree, Abraham Lincoln wanted to rebuild the south; (its a manner similar to how japan was rebuilt/yada) however after his assassination by a "southern democrat"(btw ik of rep/dem shifts 6-7times) the north decided to punish the south, delay rebuilding infrastructure and education. The result is the current underfunded/poor/degraded infrastructure hellscape we have today. It breed uneducated morons who lick the boot of their masters.

Blame the rich (as usual). Lincoln's "Reparations" was going to give freed slaves land. Some of that land was "land they'd tended for generations, but were unable to see any profit from their work," or to put it differently... owned by slave owners but worked by slaves. So, Reparations would've specifically punished slave owners (ie: southern rich). When Lincoln was killed and the new, acting President nixed Reparations, the south essentially went back to business as usual for the slave owners.

One fact you can remind lost causers of to really piss them off, 100k+ southerners fought in the union army. Most were deployed in the western theatre under Grant, Thomas and Sherman. Which means that Shermans Army had a fairly large amount of southerners when it marched to the sea. You can almost watch the anuerism happen.

Yeah, very ironic considering they were also against States blocking slave trade and transportation with their borders, not returning runaway slaves etc.
It is almost like the only state right they were at all concerned with was owning slaves.

It's not that they weren't punished enough.
It's that they were allowed to try and change the narrative after the fact. Now people who weren't involved have been given an inaccurate perspective that's been reinforced for generations. So lots believe it pushing back to a more accurate history to be rewriting history rather than over writing their rewrite to be more accurate.

Million inhabitants, the Confederacy had 9; of which 3.5 million were slaves who the Confederates didnt arm until 1864.
Really it was only the shortage of competent staff level officers that held the Union back for 4 years. Remember that Lincoln offered command of the entire Union army to Lee just a few days after Virginia had voted to secede.
