Probably worth pointing out that stradivarious violins don't sound "better". They sound different and people in the industry has associated that sound with quality. The people in the subway has not made the same association and for them it sounds like a good musician playing a subpar violin.

I never understood that story. Of course people did not stop, they were in the subway. People are only in the subway for one reason, and that is to go somewhere else. People have a time to catch, and noone want to hang out in a subway more than they need to. A subway is a place people activelly want to get away from. If they played in a park instead, a lot more people would have stayed. I think they tried to frame i like "people don't enjoy life" which is just absurd.

Most people getting on the subway are trying to get somewhere. Nobody just hangs out in subway stations. They're places you go to go somewhere else. And most of the time you don't have the luxury to hang around and listen to a performer, no matter how good they are. You have shit to do and places to be.

I bet if, outside of the subway, there was some person or group who could, with proper authority, show people as they left that the violinist was there- there'd have been throngs of people who turned back around to flock inside to listen. Because then it's not "violin music" its "famous violin music".
Saying this moreso in response to comments focusing on the cost of the violin.

Outside of art being intensely relateable, there's a lot of folks who will only appreciate work if they feel some second-hand version of prestige by witnessing or owning it.

Not everyone likes the same music, and a lot what makes a world-class interpretation of classical music is idiosyncrasies that enhance the experience of a piece the listener is already familiar with but add nothing to the untrained ear. If you are in a hurry you do not appreciate music that's only really great when you take the time to dive in. Play something simple and catchy and it's easy to get into while going to your train. Also, these videos are edited to make it look worse.

THE SUBWAY is on a timetable and if you're at the subway it's because you want to use it to go somewhere so you have to adhere to the timetable at which the trains go. If someone isn't on a timetable they would probably be in a place that's nicer to hang out at than the subway

I've watched that video before. I didn't feel like the music he chose to play was particularly enjoyable to listen to, no matter how excellent his skills, or difficult the piece. I'd have probably walked past too. If it was someone with half his skill playing a piece I enjoyed, like say the solo from Scheherazade, I'd probably stop to listen if I had time.

Omg, Scheherezade is my absolute favourite classical piece (I'm not much of a classics person at all but that one I've watched every interpretation on youtube of). Yes on all counts, the piece he played wasn't a good choice.

I agree. I just looked at the start of the video and didn't find whatever he was playing to be very engaging (but I'm not into classical). Now if he'd been playing some rock/metal covers, or maybe some Tool, that would be a different story.
Plus, as people are saying, the subway is probably one of the worst locations to choose if you are hoping people will stop for a while.
