No it's not I'm in so much agony and so much fatigue from said pain I can't do basic things like, walk, sit, stand for long periods of time, so my house is a mess and I can't do anything about it. Was in a disability hearing and the judge had some job person who asked questions about things i could and couldnt do and pretty much by the end he agreed it would be difficult to find work. So they have a meeting?(they asked me to leave the call for a bit)Between the judge the job guy and my lawyer and still deny me. This was during lockdown so it was a hearing online. I do hope to try one more time but im not holding much hope so im looking into jobs i can do online from home

If you're on SSI your resource limit as a single person is $2200. A penny above that will see your benefits cut off until you go below the threshold and can demonstrate it, then reapply for them. This limit was set decades ago when it was the equivalent of like $10K today. Despite attempts at getting the limit raised to compensate for inflation it's remained fixed, intentionally.

In Ontario, Rob Ford did basically this. Disability hasn't had a meaningful raise in decades. Two years ago it got a 3% raise and will get a few percent raise every July. Still far behind inflation rate though. His solution? Increase the amount we're allowed to earn through employment. The worst part is, in order to qualify for disability in the first place you can't be able to reliably hold even a part time job. Those, like my boys and I, who can't work at all get ignored

In the UK we're apparently under a Labor government which is supposed to be more like your democrats. They're doing worse things than our Conservative party (your republicans). They took winter fuel payments away from pensioners, made it harder to claim personal independence payments for the disabled so they can actually get to work, and are currently trying to increase taxes for anyone but the wealthy. This is all the opposite of what was voted for.

for me i could do it given that i dont have any debt, save my mortgage, work from home, have solar panels so my electric bill is $9 a month. i'd still need to cut back on some stuff, particularly dining out, but it would still be doable. fun no, but possible.

I have a ~850-900 sq ft 2 bed apartment for the equivalent of 900 USD. Granted I've been renting it since 2018 so that's kept the rent from going up too much over getting new leases. Rent went up less than 25% over that period.

I work for the airlines, I currently pay $2500 a month for a 600 sq ft, but it's walking distance to the airport. It's really hard to judge the value of being able to walk to work.
Also pay tends to be higher in high cost of living areas. GF went from $1000 a month rent in FL to $1600 a month in CT, but pay went from $18/hr to $40/hr. So she's doing way better even with higher rent.
So there's lots of tradeoffs without even getting into night-life, restaurants, activities, etc.

You can survive quite well within the window where you count the value of the items in your shopping cart against the average money you can afford to spend on food a day. But i can say from experience that it's not a very comfortable way to live.

Surviving is not the same as living. I have been there as well. Trying to stretch 60 bucks for 2 weeks of food is just utterly demoralizing and stress inducing for incredibly prolonged periods of time. Doable absolutely but the pressure of it is staggering.

honestly, it gets even worse for disabled people because we have additional costs where just counting the pennies for food and eating rice and beans doesn't cut it. when you've got expenses for housing and also medication that you need in order to live (because those can and will get very expensive, very quickly!)... it means you don't meet that minimum to live, period. you can't pay for rent *and* basic food *and* medications.
it's an intentional technique to make us too expensive to live. :(

i mean, with medication costs (which is very likely if not inevitable if you're disabled)... it's also not a surviving wage either.
and that's even before you get to things like how many medical devices are not fully covered and require a large up-front investment - things like wheelchairs, prosthetics, etc. and even if you get most of that covered, even 10% of the cost can be devastating. and for bonus fun, certain types of disability mean that having more than 2000 in the bank is too much >

so after a warning period of a few weeks, the government will start to claw back money directly and halt benefits until your assets are below the acceptable level again. sure, you can jump through additional hoops for special savings accounts now - but they're highly monitored, can only be used on certain pre-approved things (you can save for a new wheelchair, you can't save for a new sofa), and iirc in many states you can only start saving in them after filling in a minimum in another special>
