It's a little bit of a trope that a hyper competent enemey mech pilot in like an anime or something will cause someone on the good guy side to fall in love with them. The only one I can think of immediately is the two super technical pilots from Robotech. The guy with the green hair and the scarlet haired lady that was one of the zentradi pilots but couldn't ever beat him so she came over as a spy but then defected. That's not a very gay example, so I apologize.
