My mil recently got scammed after giving her the talk multiple times, lost thousands but refuses to believe me that it was a scam, she literally went to 4 different grocery stores that all refused to sell her gift cards and called them the scammers. Some people will just never admit that they are wrong

I had the talk with my mom after my aunt got scammed pretty hard. Sadly she's the obstinate type, as well as pretty gullible. I've had to debunk crazy stuff she's gotten through her facebook feed more than once. :(

I’ve been running linux for a good while now. I received a call from ‘M$ support’ from someone with a very, very thick Indian accent that they had received a notification that my windows was infected.
I laughed quietly, played along until they started to give me instructions, then asked whether or not I should use sudo. It got a bit quiet, then suddenly no moe call.
Be cool, keep them thinking they got someone, then make them realize they ware wasting their time. Win-win.

Another scam they're running is they claim to be from your bank's fraud department and try to get you to give them the 2fa codes to reset your login so they can take control of your account. NEVER give anyone the temp codes. Your bank doesn't need it and wont ask for it.

Real admins never need any password, authentication, or for you to log in. They can do what they need on their own, by design.

Or claiming to be feds investigating money laundering. What it boils down to is: never give anybody 2FA codes, and never trust anybody calling you on the phone asking for any personal information. Spoofing phone numbers only works when they call you, not when you call them. So use any source besides the person who called to find the right number for that person/company, and call them back. If it's not a scam they won't mind the paranoia.

These days my response is to waste as much time as possible by pretending to be a doddering old man who has to put them on hold repeatedly to find information. If they ask for an SSN, I say 420-69-8008 and see if they realize I'm fucking with them (they never seem to.)

Also NEVER run anything on your PC while logging into anything. Even if it's from a trusted source. I got token-intercepted because an account of a close acquaintance got taken over, and so I lost my own discord account to a token-intercept because I didn't know what it was, and my guard was basically all the way down.

- security issue might warrant a cal to a user
- use verification when the employ once again has forgot their passto AND misplaced their phone. Call to manager for verification can happen
- Sometimes other IT might call you because they need to talk to your IT to help them fix their email setup to solve that problem there is between users of both companies.

I'm old and used to work in IT. If someone running for office REALLY wants my vote they will do 2 things...1. Undo almost everything T-rump has done. 2. Take those prisoner camps that ICE has and put scammers in them, along with the Tate brothers.

They got what now against them in Britain, 50 charges? Pretty sure the British courts got more than enough to put them behind bars with a legal and fair trial. To my knowledge the tates have not broken any serious laws in the US, and throwing foreign people in jail without a trial and torturing them is one of the many reasons people are kinda miffed at the US.

I feel a bit left out, having never gotten one of those calls. Also, while I did get that email from someone claiming they'd filmed me masturbating to porn through a pixel on my monitor, it wasn't the variant that complimented me on my taste in porn. So the one scam I got left me feeling insulted!

Nah, "Microsoft" calling about some supposed virus that got in my computer (just after they asked IF I had a computer). The recorded ones just claim they're from LinkedIn or InfoJobs and ask me to add them to WhatsApp and send them my CV.

I got a phone call from Micrrosoft. Apparently ze computer had downloaded ze file, and ze file contained ze virus. I tried to stretch the conversation as long as possible but at some point I couldn't hold my laughter any more with their shitty accent and their obvious scam, so they hung up.

I usually try to string scammers along as well - may as well waste their time rather than let them go on to scam someone who might fall for it - but one caused me to drop my facade instantly. Dude's opening gambit was 'Hello there sir, we are calling to inform you that due to an unpaid tax bill, your social security number has been suspended.'

I had a call from Microsoft. It was my account manager, they wanted far more money than any scammer claiming to be from Microsoft would try and get.
