***EDIT: WOW. I didn't think this was going to get as much attention as it did! Thanks everybody. I only posted because I was so upset and everyone around me kept saying "it was just a car," which did not make me feel any better about it. Husband and I sat down and came up with a game plan last night for our next vehicle, so I feel much better things. Thanks again, Imgurians!***
I know this won't mean much to anyone but me, but my heart is broken. She might not have been the fanciest car or the newest or the fastest or the prettiest, but I worked my ass off to pay her off. If you grew up a poor kid, you know how much that can mean to a person. She was at 98K miles and was scheduled for her 100K overhaul in a couple of weeks.
The frame is bent, the rear axle is destroyed, both driver's side rims are bent, and, of course, the body work. Her KBB value ain't much, so she'll get totalled out and we'll have to scrap her.
I don't want a new car, I want my car. But some asshole in a truck decided to merge into her on the interstate going 75 mph. She did her job, she kept us safe, and I thanked her by having her hauled away for scrap.
I loved that fucking car. She was mine and that meant something to me.
Imissmylurk
I feel you, I just lost my 2000 mustang to a person turning left into me. I only had her for a few years though but she was my first car...
ALittleLeftofReality365
I’m sorry @OP. My first car is almost 20 years old. Means nothing to almost anybody but I paid it off. It’s mine, & it’s still going strong.
Chefpnut
THIS IS MY CAR. THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT, BUT THIS ONE IS MINE.
fbutaric
Feel your pain. I spent $1K on parts on my VW diesel and it got totaled during a fuel shortage . 50 mpg, could not replace it.
clarkWhogotsanity
Insurance values are up so you should do ok. Also don't use kbb since that's mainly for private party sales. Dealers use nada

Rusticshine
if you are in new york my brother owns a body shop with a frame puller. for a couple grand could have it looking pretty good again
w1k2
So sorry for your lost. I felt the same when I had to put down my 2001 Honda Accord
distraingotnobrakes
My ‘01 accord was totaled while parked, at 199k. Best car I’ve ever had, but newer Hondas haven’t measured up imo.
Mackowitz
I know those feels. Had a 200k+ miles car get stolen, crashed, then found it. I’d still be driving it if wasn’t totaled. Glad you’re safe.
Jamesstin
Suuure ya did. Wink wink
Cindex1337
Pretty sure you meant that as a joke but you forgot the /s. When trumpers and flat earthers exist genuinely you ALWAYS need the /s
JonathanMidwatch
That sucks. I’m sorry.
polarbearbaby
Omg this happened to me a dozen years ago. I loved that car. My condolences and I’m glad you are safe.
NATA5
Just sent my 99 Saturn away after some lady backed into it in the parking lot. Bittersweet but at least I can get a 4WD car from this decade
ballsoutflyer
"offer me anything I ask for" "anything you want" "I WANT MY CAR BACK YOU SONOFABITCH."
hesbeginningtobelieve
That sucks. Sorry. At least you’ll probably get more than the kbb value
shadow351
Doesn't look that bad, have you actually gotten a quote? I've seen worse get fixed. What do you mean by bent frame? That's likely unibody car
shanasphone350
I am so sorry. Mine is a boy, and I would be in jail. These take such great care of us. She knows she was loved. She'll be with you.
KravenBlood
I am an estimator in a body shop. This is not a total. Your frame is not bent and it's not likely that u have bent axles. Get a 2nd opinion
Nowronganswer
I was looking for a comment like yours. Totally agree this is mostly cosmetic. Car definitely repairable and not totalled
evil66gurl
Just sold my old car (2005) recently. I had to hide in the house, I was crying hard. Why do we get so attached?
Shpielers
DONT accept the first offer their insurance makes, and don't let it be based in Kelly blue book. It is WAY out of touch right now
Shpielers
Find the same make/model for sale at local dealers (or Criagslist, etc) and use that value instead.

It’s because you respect the things that take care of you. That’s the way it should be. That’s the way things become magical!
CurbYourClassWar
My first newish/nice car, was totaled several months after getting it. Some clown obliterated the rear, buckling the frame. I know the feel.
smadge1
I’m the idiot that totalled my own new car last year. Drove through a patch of water that was deeper than it looked and screwed the engine.
Jamesstin
Holy shit. Did you have some stupid cold air intake or something?
smadge1
No, engine was turbo though
dsmegst
My 2012 Honda Fit was totaled after getting T boned. Right after a new clutch and 100K service. I still miss it. ?

Underrated Lebowski quote
Hashbrown123
That's like, your opinion, man.
BigRedTX
I feel for you. I bought a truck new in 2004. Loved that thing. Then someone stole her last year. People suck.
zoobizoobizooo
Look into Ravelco. They'll take care of you.
SueSnue
People do suck, so very much.
jsavidge
People do suck. Wait...I'm a people. Crap!
Habtor
I had a 2011 ram it was stolen 4 years ago. Was good news for me I got a same year jeep Rubicon fully modded covered by insurance.
cptcr
Diesel engine? Dodge Ram? Seem to be the popular combo to steal.
QuanticChaos
I fix cars like this all the time, first off there is no frame per se as it's unit-construction, and I can't see enough damage to bend /1
QuanticChaos
the cars structure in any way that matter. a fender, 2 doors and 2 wheels can be obtained from wrecking yards and most insurance /2
QuanticChaos
will let you "buy" the car back, then you swap the parts on and get it re-certified! /3
bikergeek6249
Bent frame means it's likely not fixable. I had a car totaled six months ago, I bought it back and had it fixed, I was better off than 1/2
bikergeek6249
trying to buy a new car in the current (overpriced) market. Glad you're OK! 2/2
Jamesstin
Unibodies dont have a single frame. Theyre almost always repairable within reasonable effort.
pacmanownsyou
Sorry, truly. I know how we get attached to cars. I'm at a dealer now selling the car I bought in June because my wife just left me.
Aragog
Stop trying to one up OP. "OH NO! I have no car AND no wife!" - @pacmanownsyou ........ I'm sorry you're going through it though.
PrincessWasabi
I hope you find love again. I’m sorry about your car
pacmanownsyou
I appreciate that, honestly.
PrincessWasabi
It will happen, just have your seed planted so when you get water and sunshine, it can grow :)
pacmanownsyou
I'll take your word for it at this point in time. I can't remember a time in my life feeling so empty and hopeless.
PrincessWasabi
These things take time. You’re also going thru a lot of changes, unexpected ones even. Lean on friends or family a little, but also give
Jamesstin
So what excuse have you made up that it's her fault? Sorry not sorry..see too much absurdity coming from men due to redpill shit these days
IcarusTower
The only absurdity is whatever the fuck trip you're on that made you write that load of blame tossing bullshit.
pacmanownsyou
Where did I note blame in my statement? She left. I need to free up income. Is comprehension not your strong suit?
Aragog
pacmanownsyou
So now I'll just have "an car" and use the savings to help build a new life.
DeanGulberri1
Sorry dude
kc2syk
That's a better option than having the money go to lawyers. GL to you.
pacmanownsyou
I agree. Family law is a fucking racket.
Corrodias
I cried when sorting through the glove box contents of my old car before scrapping it (hit a deer, too old to be worth repairing), because »

my parents helped me buy it. They weren't gone (though my father has since passed); it was just the passing of an era that got to me.

You got this :)
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
sorry bud. lost mine recently when a fucking tree fell on it. my first "brand new" car i had paid completly off. ...
Aysling
When my partner was still at his parents house a tree fell on his car. His insurance wildness cover it claiming it was a homeowners issue
Aysling
and his parents homeowners wouldn't cover it claiming it was a car insurance issue. His mom didn't like me giving him rides, so bought him a
Aysling
new-to-him car for 7k and demanded he pay her back ASAP.
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
couldnt even pretend to get another car with the payout i got either. it was a fucking joke.
Jecht1
I feel ya, same happened to mine and my wife's by the same falling tree.
datester35
Did insure not completely cover the car's value? If it was totaled you should fight tooth and nail for it.
rchcopper
Especially as used values are still up because production of new cars is still lagging behind
SueSnue
Yeah, we're not expecting much, but with car prices being what they are these days, we'll have to replace her with a POS.
Durtschi
Reject the insurance company's first offer. Cite work you've done and current market as reasons. You may be able to get more
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
i couldnt even get the cheapest car at any of the dealerships in my area. I got less than half of the cheapest used car i could find
xaireiii
It doesn’t help now, and not all states have it, but AAA is a great insurance for this. They paid me a large sum when my car was totaled.
Convolutions
Don't take the first offer. Rebuttal with comparative vehicles for sale in your area and they will offer more. Every time.
chewtoy9696
@op this
JustDriftingAboutTheInterWebs
Probably dependant on state laws. Where I am is take it or leave itbasically. They have no obligation to up it unless maybe I got a lawyer
