Considering how much gerrymandering and other shit has been done in the USA, I don't know if it was exactly a free and fair election per se. But at least persecution of political opponents isn't as bad in the USA.

Good! And well, sadly the evil people don't care. It's not something that's solved by winning a battle - it's a never-ending war against those who want to oppress others for personal gain. The struggle never ends. If the youth don't step up, then it's game over. But luckily the able-bodied seem to be stepping up, at least to an extent.
You can always try to do something about it. They're going to do whatever they want if everyone lets them to.
