Because, historically, women have been kept out of the field with the industrialisation of the medical industry. Pretty hard to see a female OBGYN if there aren't any or they're not accepting new patients. Also, there's the whole professional expectation that you treat your patients with respect regardless of gender thing...

Well no, expecting others to conform to grooming standards that are not imposed on you because it is socially acceptable to do so IS hypocritical. Do you have any idea how much time/money/effort it takes to keep your entire body hairless and silky smooth at all times so that strange men don't feel entitled to tell you that you're disgusting on the street. When that behaviour does rear it's ugly head in my workplace it's treated as the sexual harassment that it is.
