The monetization of social media, plus the rise of generative AI has also caused a dramatic plummet in content quality. Scammers from poor countries flood social media with viral AI slop in order to game the system and get payouts for basically no effort.
A lot of it comes from smartphones becoming the dominant way that people engage with and interact with the internet. The phone-shaped meme format that prevails today looks like shit on my desktop, and a lot of the content just feels more shallow and low effort, because it's harder to express more complex ideas on a touchscreen a few inches across. Not to mention reels, TikTok, and other short-form video becoming popular, most of which is extremely vapid and not designed to hold your attention.
