Salaams! Just a lurker, I don't really ever post :( but I come here every day several times a day I just can't think of anything interesting to contribute. I love wholesome content! We need a bit more positivity in the world right now. I'm a Nebraska native and live with my two beautiful furry boys George and Rambo. Their doggie sister Jamie passed way in 2019. And because a majority of my conversations devolve into this..I feel it necessary to address here. I forgot to be oppressed because I was too busy being awesome. There are so many people who try to make mention that there's no woman out there who would willingly wear niqab or burqa who wasn't oppressed by men and an archaic religion let alone would wear this as a natural born American. Well, world, I present to you myself: I'm an early 30s, educated white woman. I was born in Nebraska; I spent most of my life in small farming towns in Nebraska of less than 3,000 people. I've never been married. I was raised in a very open, liberal family made up of feminist men and strong willed, intelligent women. No one in my family is currently Muslim (or ever was for that matter). I'm also a fully self accepting, never-closeted lesbian. So...who is oppressing me again? Please know, I don't seek to speak on behalf of all Muslim women or even all niqab-wearing women. I am just one woman with one opinion. I'm usually content to lurk in peace but too often my side of things is not being presented in these discussions..and it should. When we push for women's rights and freedom we should be pushing for true freedom. This means a woman's right to decide things for herself, even if you disagree with her point of view.
