It's only natural to feel like you are doing less when you have all the hours in a day vs blacking out or being in a stupor for like 4 to 6 hours a night. I started gardening, it's almost as expensive, and the way I do it, almost as fruitless.
What helped me was realizing I couldn't do half measures, I couldn't just have one or only on weekends or only to celebrate or even only a sip at a wedding. Also, finding hobbies to fit the parts of the where you would usually be drunk and content. The biggest issue for me was how bored I was and how boring I felt.
It doesn't matter what direction you drive out of major Midwestern cities, you pretty much always end up in the south.
3 years here, honestly, the first month was always where I caved before. Once you make it past your friends and family expecting you to drink at events, it does get easier. Finding hobbies to fill the times you used to be blacked out is key! CONGRATULATIONS!

What full picture would make this acceptable outside of the unbelievable? I'm all about seeing grey, but where is the grey here?
