In my old neighborhood someone built an outdoor kitchen without consulting the HOA. The homeowner did everything they could to keep it, but It was torn down.
Good job not scaring it, and making it abandon its meal.

This is called root bound. They are correct that you need to "free" the roots (by hand, using water, etc.). Replant in bigger pot, or the ground. when repotting cover roots in honey. This will stimulate growth, and prevent the plant from going into shock. I've done this many times.
And the convertible top is black, not white.
