Hi, I am Norrah. First of all, I am from Denmark, I am an 30-ish year-old male, and a huge--
But you are called Norrah, said Imgur while holding up a finger like they were waiting for permission to ask a question.
Yes, I know, said Norrah. I just said that... But I was about to say--
But that is a girls name? Said Imgur. Feeling very confused.
Listen, said Norrah. It is not like the name is exclusively feminine. Also, it is not really the point. This name is something that naturally evolved. I did not choose my own online name. It was given to me, for reason that I do not need to go into detai--
But, Said Imgur, but was shushed by Norrah instantly.
I do not have the power to change what I am called. I have earned this name, and it is mine now. I am Norrah. I am no-one in particular. But this name is mine--
The uncomfortable situation had started to feel heavy on Imgur. They wanted to cut the tension, but could not figure out what to say. This was simply too weird, even for Imgur.
Anything else proclaimed Norrah?
Imgur inhaled as if they prepared to talk.
Anything not related to my name? Norrah asserted.
Imgur fell silent. But thought to themselves, what kind of guy calls themselves a female name on the internet. That is just messed up. A little while passed before Imgur quietly mustered to ask.
You are not like a Brony or something? But Norrahs reaction nearly forced them to choke on their question.
For fucks sake, exclaimed Norrah. I am not a good damn neckbeard. I own a lot of expensive suits, sure. I enjoy fashion, and I wish I could pull off a three-piece suit with a hat. I love the art deco period, and I love the 1920s fashion... but noo.. that has been ruined by neckbeards forever. Even though I am fairly fit, and I love to exercise - triathlon disciplines mostly. I am still a giant fucking nerd, and because of that, there is no way that I will ever be able to wear a hat.. and especially it means, that I will by no means... EVER.. watch my little pony. The signals that would send. I cannot even--
Norrah had begun walking in circles in what effectively was a dome of anger, meaning he had started to ignore Imgurs presence. His anger had completely overtaken him...
..I mean, he continued. I like Adventure Time, and I enjoyed stuff like those kids with the platypus. It is endearing and funny.. but holy shit, consider that I found out that my little pony was even remotely watchable... I do not think it is.. but what if it was? I would never be able to live that down. Jesus Christ, you are sick Imgur. I would never even consider trying --
Imgur was noticeably uncomfortable and had started to back away. Norrah would have seen this if not for his continued rambling.
-- I mean, a neckbeard. Just because of my feminine name? That is sexist. Wait, is it? He said to himself. He lingered for a second while he tried to figure out if he was stuck in some sort of Social justice warrior trap, but he decided to continue...
..Is there reason that a man on a pronominally male dominated site can not identify with a pronominally female name, without there being something wrong with him, or does that confuse you? Norrah asked Imgur directly.
It was here that he noticed that Imgur was currently fighting with the back button and apparently was in such a bewildered state that they had failed to click it, repeatedly, during the entire rant.
Fuck... You need to fix this... Their discomfort is on you now, Norrah thought to himself. I guess I am kinda wrong as well. I mean sure, It is easy to make this mistake. Remember that time you met that guy called Emma. I mean, for real. That name was messed up...
Norrah took a deep breath and said, I am sorry... I am, I really am... I have not had my coffee today, and I mean... People on the internet are weird... I know, for real. This name does not help me. I have had people assume that I am female on more than one occasion. Most do not... but... I can really feel the difference in their treatment when they do. It is harder to get taken seriously when people think you are female. And I get so many unsolicited gift-subs on Twitch? I do not know for sure, but I think some of them assume my gender.. and honestly, I have less authority when people think I am a girl. It is really a bad sign in our global society that this is the case, so I will by no means ever change my online name. It has been given to me, I have earned it, and I will fight for my right to keep it. Also, when people realize I am not female, it might cause them to realize how their opinion about me might have been affected by gender.. or it causes them to think I am even weirder than before.. small price to pay really if I can change just one persons behavior... But that brony comment just threw me off.
Maan... I have never had anyone ask me that before, and it felt really weird. Like being accused of murder, only worse. I am sorry, Okay? It is my fault. Lets start over.
Hi. I am Norrah.
