Maiar is the numerous but less powerful category of the angelic/demonic Ainur spirits. They existed before the material universe and helped shape it. The most powerful of the Ainur are the Valar [who Men often mistook for gods] and the rest of the Ainur, the followers and helpers of the Valar, are known as the Maiar.
