I unfortunately depend on driving a big van every day (carpenter) in a big city (KC) that got the ‘highway through poor neighborhood’ treatment hard in the 50s-70s as well. Blockbusting and redlining too. ‘Murica! I try to limit my work to within a mile or two of my historic midtown neighborhood though, and try to avoid highways like the plague. And my work is all on prewar homes, trying to save what’s left of the old world. It is frustrating having to do the rat race sometimes. Ugh.
My in-laws have a place down in the Keys, and I got to see one last year up close just like this! Amazing creatures.
My dad learned that joke in the Navy in the 70s and never missed an opportunity to demonstrate it at restaurants haha.
When I was in like 5th grade, I was home sick from school. My mom knew I loved Holy Grail, so went down and rented Meaning of Life, popped on the VHS and left me home alone on the couch while she ran some errands. She came home right at the very end as the guy was being chased to his death by the topless roller skaters and dove for the tv power button haha. That movie gave me an… education.
Oh, and Jenkins, apparently your mother died this morning.
That CD lived in my discman all through middle and part of high school. Python shaped me into the semi functioning weirdo I am today.
Mine usually stop working when they fall off scaffolding, I drop a pipe wrench on it, etc. (A carpenter’s phone lives a hard life). I’m 36 but feel like an irate 70 year old when I go in for a new one and they say they’re discontinuing the smaller pocket size iPhones. My first LG flip phone circa 2003 lasted 9 1/2 years. Rebuilt that thing like 4 times with spare parts. I miss those simpler times.
Every time I have dinner with my in laws, my FIL somehow manages to bring him up and the new world order. He just recently legit asked if I got my protest check after I posted a pic from no kings. He is fully brainwashed and I’ve given up trying to convince him that lizard people are not in fact real. It’s infuriating.
My old coworker had a boss at a cabinet shop back in the 90s. Super straight edge creepily chipper born again Christian that always wanted to spread the good word. The guy out of the blue suffocated his wife with a pillow one night.
As a Preservation carpenter this boils my blood. Couldn’t even bother saving the window sashes? What an absolute fucking travesty.
I’m at a 4-way tie between the first three and Yield. They all have their strengths and it depends on my mood. I think Yield is my desert island album though.
I think a lot of ppl found street parking and walked a bit. I got there at 12:15 and had no problem finding garage parking a few blocks west though
It was a great day in KC as well! I’m somewhere in the middle of this crowd. I think the estimates were 5000+
Nick Offerman is my spirit animal. I got to see him live a few years ago. His humor and down to earth philosophies are so honest and humble. I’m a carpenter, so also a huge fan of his woodworking side. The epitome of macho man, while also a total goofy softy. An absolute legend.
So sorry for your loss. Hugging one of my rascals now. Peace to you.

I grew up near San Jose in the 90s. Used to love going to Fry’s with my dad. I recall one was Aztec/Mayan temple themed, and another was ancient Egyptian. Those were the days…

This album got me through my teen years. The ‘03 30th reissue was the first vinyl I bought as I was discovering music, and I’ve worn those grooves clean through. With good headphones and a dark room, it is an experience.Time in particular hits me profoundly every few years as I go through life. The fact that they were in their 20s when they wrote such an epic commentary on the human experience and the arc of life is profound. Also, pairs nicely with Wizard of Oz for the uninitiated…
I saw him in a small club in 08ish as he was starting to become a big name. Been listening to his podcast off and on since he started it. It’s been fun following along seeing his journey through marriage and fatherhood, he’s matured a lot. From tough guy bachelor stand up, to what I consider a very well-spoken level headed social critic approaching Carlin.
I’d gladly take it. I’d be Canadian by a few feet. (Live right on the KS/MO state line in KC). Pancakes for breakfast, tacos for lunch, and poutine for dinner!

I’m in an odd nervous state of sleep habit where I wake up almost subconsciously every few hours just so I can go back to sleep and have weird dreams before actually getting up for the day. They’re usually just those bizarre AI type dreams, but even if they’re nightmares I don’t mind it. Like a free movie. Is this a thing?

I changed my name to Turd Ferguson on my iphone 10 years ago. Thought it’d be funny if every time I asked Siri, “what’s my name?” And she’d say “Turd Ferguson”. It’s still funny every time. Has made for a few interesting business interactions though.
As a scruffy white carpenter in the Midwest, I get this a lot too. 90% of my clients are fiercely liberal and I try to make it very clear day one that I align with them. The maga crap I’ve heard from some of the subs onsite who run their mouth thinking I’m one of them has sickened me many times. One guy was legit telling me about how he’s fortified his house and has firing angles established for when the hordes of Libs come over the hill for his stuff. Wild times we’re in…
They were going full apeshit on me. Wasn’t expecting it. At some point a little girl jumped in with a big stick. I won’t lie, I was winded afterwards haha. That armor is surprisingly heavy, and it was 90 degrees out. It was a true battle.
