He's not exactly very involved in the story. The only reason I can see is so DS1 players could go "hey it's Andre!"

Yes definitely, DS3 was still a really good game despite all the fanservice.
He's basically a copy of Siegmeyer. It's like the same guy with a different name.
DS3 really went overboard with the fanservice. Seeing Andre, Siegward, etc without explanation really broke my immersion.
Jacht is still a word in Dutch, nothing ancient about it.
I had an idea for a Master Thief playthrough, where you were only allowed to have stolen items in your inventory.
It's to weed out the weak padawans before their full training
