$10 at Walmart gets one of these ⤵️which is not only better (note the wrist strap, supporting a full-arm pull without wrecking your thumb), but also never jams/malfunctions to load, AND can use anything for ammo.
I've shot rocks, pennies, beads, pinecones, chunks of wood, CDs and even arrows from a wrist-rocket like this. And the bands are like $3, and take maybe 5min to put on.
My brother in law still hunts with a musket. Simple, especially for weapons that need to be dependable, is a feature. I'd take the '80s slingshot any day vs the gimmick machine shown in the original post. Do you even see how convoluted & messed up the band system on that is?! The ammo clip needing to be slotted in the correct orientation; and when the magnet in the sling gets dirt shavings all over it (as all magnets do)..? Simple FTW.
The magnet is also brittle and risks cracking from those impacts (the ball bearings touching it directly) and then violently releasing them and decelerating. It's eventually going to disintegrate.

Cautionary note, the wrist brace can make a slingshot illegal in some places. Some legal codes use that as the line across which it becomes a hunting weapon or a prohibited/dangerous projectile weapon.
Sure the Datsum is small, but unless it's like my-pecker-small, it probably won't fit, sorry. Now using the Datsum AS A TARGET, well that's an entirely different story! :D

How long do they last in use? And how long do they last in storage? If a small, easy to carry set of replacement bands can make the thing last through 60 years of frequent use, then... shit, I might just have to update my zombie apocalypse kit...
Here's the stainless steel pint glass I was firing at from various distances. I hit it a few times from 50 feet with random rocks. If your ammo is consistent, it's easier to improve accuracy. Rocks can kind of veer off course. I learned by shooting frozen grapes back in the day because they were cheap and biodegradable. I'll carry a bag of steel shot if I am shooting a target. This is one odd thing I'm incredibly good at lol
I know a guy who collects acorns; has jars of 'em. They won't hit as hard as steel shot, but they'll hurt. And they're consistent, plentiful, and, as you noted, biodegradable. And even if you do use steel shot, at least that is, in theory, recoverable; it's not like it's going to break like an arrow or be spent like a cartridge.
I just shot probably 400 some rocks of various sizes from a fresh set of bands during my back country camping trip, and only stopped when I noticed some slight tearing on one side. I've had this slingshot since I was 9-10 and I feel like I've replaced the bands less than 10 times in my life, with sometimes years between use. So yes, add it to the apocalypse kit!
Unless your projectile hits the mount arm, impacting the band as well, they last for multiple seasons. All through my childhood, I had barely a handful of band changes. But I abused the hell out of mine - rock impact marks, drops down the hillsides I was hiking, poor storage, stretching the bands too far - being a kid with it. A responsible hunter could keep a band going for years, probably; and the device itself for a lifetime most likely.
