It can't, they're chatbots. That's it. They just randomize via averaged probability of all the information they have. They can't come up with something new. That's why they made up some shit about 'it solved this hyper, uber difficult maths problem because NO ONE CAN TELL US IT DIDN'T SOLVE IT' It can't even function as a proper calculator without the information it's scrapped.

you're talking about LLMs, one of the less useful uses of AI. Specialized AI, can be a ridiculously useful tool. examples are Alphafold, better at catching issues on medical scans, faster vaccines etc.
They are probability machines, but they are really good at finding patterns and way faster than we are. I truly believe that AI can be a great tool and help us advance faster by doing a lot of "grunt work". but i do agree that they won't reinvent the wheel by themselves.

So...... I have to work in AI a lot. Like, far more than I want and generally my work is constantly, "how can we cut or eliminate our software's depenance on AI".
That said, there are things it actually is good at and does extremely efficiently. Medicine will be probably the fastest and most immediate success. Maybe we're looking at Cyberdyne Systems, but the result will most likely be some pretty astonishing innovations that will estabilish it's position "politically".
we'll see.

Terminators only had a thin skin sheath (why not hide futuristic laser weapons in a skin sheath too? because the writer didn't want to, of course). I'm thinking second series Cylons. Maybe some umbrella corporation or engineered last of us cordyceps for a stretch goal.
