They missed the part about how adorable they are!

I knew a man who was a lawyer and political organizer – very well educated and articulate - who said he once interviewed for a job as a teacher, and was asked by the superintendent if he could work at night at school events. He was trying to decide whether to come back with “I don’t have a problem with that” or “ I have no problem with that,” and of course in his nervousness, it came out “I don’t have no problem with that.”

Skunks is a bit like badgers and they don’t care none about nothin. Unfortunately, that makes them bow up against cars, which don’t often work out so well for them.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the only other natural predator that I know of for skunks has 5 wheels...

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LIE! Tomato juice neutralizes and does remove it! I know because I did it on my corframs.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They also eat rats!

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"They ALWAYS warn before spraying"

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They also have the cutest little babies and walk single file with momma in front and the babies following behind her with the cutest little baby waddle walks ever.

Beg to differ on the "accuracy" thing - the skunk my dog barked in the face of (he thought he'd made a new friend!) sprayed in completely the wrong direction. Don't worry though, once the dog noticed the WONDERFUL NEW SMELL, the idiot ROLLED IN IT. Skunk ran away, apparently it couldn't handle that level of dumb.

🤣😂

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tbf if I was a small creature and a dog barked in my face I too would shit myself in whatever direction lol

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Skunks are generally pretty chill because they know they're armed with potentially lethal force (supposedly a predator sprayed in the face can actually starve to death because they rely on their sense of smell to identify food). Skunks aren't afraid of anything.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It takes about 15 days for a skunk to regenerate its spray so they use it sparingly

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They are also cute especially when trying to run

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only five shots? I have an idea for a “Dirty Harry” reboot.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I caught one and relocated it and it never sprayed me and was very calm, they are mild mannered.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having twice, entirely by accident, caught a skunk by surprise (mutual, I can assure you), I for one am *very* grateful that skunks give ample warning before they spray.

2 months ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Skunk: *hissing, stamping*
Me: "Oh, yeah, sorry man, I'm going."

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lots of skunks in my neighborhood and when I walk at night I frequently have to stomp at them to get them to notice me. They're nearsighted, unafraid and very interested in digging grubs out of the lawns next to the sidewalk.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Skunks also make pretty descent pets.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They also make very attractive anthromorphs.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Can confirm, people want me to draw them all the time.

I do stupid shit like this constantly. Partway through a sentence like this I'll switch from "They don't have a sense of smell" to "They have no sense of smell". My brain is all "That sounds so much smarter" without realizing I just combined both sentences instead of writing one correct sentence. Stupid brain.

Skunk spray is 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, (E)-2-butene-1-thiol, and various thioacetates. Nobody farts that.

2 months ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

and oxygen deactivates it. hydrogen peroxide mixed with soap to dissolve the oils gets rid of the smell.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You’ve never eaten at Taco Bell.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You need to drink a bunch of Coronas first to get that skunky fart. jk/ In Gulp by Mary Roach she says the smell comes from about 8 sulfur chemicals, including hydrogen sulfide. Also, farts are mostly hydrogen and only about 1/3 of people have the right bacteria to make methane, which is odorless.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only 1/3 of people? I'm not sure I'm one of those, unless it makes people fart more, then yes, cuz i be fartin'!

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, not with that attitude.

2 months ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Look at the "owls don't have no sense of smell" thing. Slop slop sloppy slop .

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends if I had thioacetates for lunch.

2 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Hence the "almost" in that sentence.

I was on a bus trip.... All they had was boiled eggs and horse wurst. Friggin Dutch.

I wonder how close those molecules are to the shape of coffee esters. Reason I say that is I smell coffee, especially fresh coffee, and I smell skunk. And I knew a girl in high school who would smell skunk and smell coffee.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I also smell fresh roasted coffee when smelling skunk! Btw, sulfur compounds get deodorized through oxidation, like bleach (please dont use bleack on yourself) or hydrogen peroxide

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It isn't the esters that give that smell to coffee, it's the mercaptans. They share the sulfur-hydrogen group, which is responsible for the smell. The shape of coffee and skunk mercaptans are quite different, although I suppose it is notable and relevant that they are fairly small organic compounds (only 5 carbons).

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most skunks can't read above a third grade level.

They could grow to eight feet long if they wanted to.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't forget that their family includes otters, badgers, weasels, stoats, ferrets and wolverines!

2 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yay for Mustelids!

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ha-ha! Skunks were moved into their own family back in the '90s! They're Mephitidae now! Ha-ha!

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

*Their superfamily. They're not mustelids (members of the weasel family) but musteloids (members of the superfamily that includes the mustelid, raccoon, and skunk / stink badger families. Also the red panda family Ailuridae that is missing from this diagram)

2 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

how long has 'superfamily' been a thing? I'm genX and didn't learn that one in high school Biology. King Phillip Came Over For Good Soup... or, Kinky People Come Over For Good Sex.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are several prefixes that allow taxonomists to squeeze taxa in between that hierarchy. Super-, sub-, infra-, and parv-. Everyone knows that humans belong to the primate order, but in between that and the class Mammalia is an infraclass (Placentalia), a subclass (Eutheria), and a superorder (Euarchontoglires). And in between our order and our family (Hominidae) there's a suborder (Haplorhini), an infraorder (Simiiformes), and a superfamily (HominOidae). Not always listed in its entirety tho

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PS: There is a taxon above kingdom now btw, which is the domain (Eukaryota versus Prokaryota). So the Kinky Phillip mnemonic doesn't work anymore

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bruh.

2 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Nope. They don’t have no sense of smell.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That should be, “They aint got no sense of smell.”

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate double negatives

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Skunk spray isn’t just a bad smell, it’s a legit chemical irritant; so even though owls can’t smell it they’re still greatly irritated, and the great horned owl will only go after a skunk if absolutely necessary

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Chewy was commenting on the double negative, "... don't have no sense of smell".

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also says fart smell (hydrogen sulfide... H2S) is "almost identical" to butyl mercaptan (C4H10S). Lol. Slop slop sloppy.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lt. Dan, you ain't got no sense of smell.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Most birds don't really have a sense of smell, with the exception of New World vultures, which can use it to find carrion.

It's part of the reason the "mom will reject her nestling if you touch it b/c it smells like humans" is a total myth. Just put that little fucker back in the nest.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(This is just a fact as an interesting aside, despite the weird probably-AI phrasing)

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see what you did there.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the term of art for skunk spray is 'broth', which means that we can get a skunk, get a hyena for their butter, and create The Final Soup.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm choosing not to google where Hyena Butter comes from.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I did it for you. Anal gland secretions 🤢

90% of the time whatever the secretion is, it's from the ass.

Experience is saying "I know X". Wisdom is saying "I do not know X" TRUE wisdom is being able to say "I know that I don't *want* to know X"

If you're going to skunk a bunch of enemies, remember to reload your skunk. They only carry 5 rounds.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ch-stink! I'm ready boys.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We both fire our skunks five times. Then I reach for a baby-stinker out of my ankle holster. The music changes.
I'm sprayed in the face, it's a kill-shot... you had one up your sleeve, it pops out on an accordion-lever. Zoom in to my body on the floor. End scene.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I. Am. In.
It's like I can smell the scene in front of my eyes.
