Daniela Rus, director of MIT CSAIL, talks about how AI is being used to study sperm whale communication.

She explains that sperm whales communicate through discrete clicking patterns called codas, which makes their vocalizations especially interesting for computer science analysis. According to Rus, earlier research suggested sperm whales had around 20 or 21 codas, while AI-based analysis showed the possibility of about 540 different types of sounds.

No. Next question.

I hope the whales can tell when the researchers write their responses with AI like everyone else can when their lazy boss fires of a droning email on a topic you just brought to their attention after sitting down for less than 3 seconds

For god’s sake don’t tell the military we can communicate with whales. And if you do, tell them the whales’ answer is “GFYS”.

This is a good use of AI.

With how shit AI is, I would assume it's entirely wrong. This is probably another push for how "great" it is

Great. Now we can talk to the whale ship and avoid having to travel back in time entirely.

I mean, duh. It's only human hubris and the stupid fucking Bible that told us humans had dominion over the animals. They have been here so much longer than we have. How dare we presume that they don't have a language?

Doesn't each whale pod have it's own language the way dolphins do? So wouldn't that limit how useful this translator is? It's still cool, but having to make a new translator for each pod seems like it'd be a boondoggle.

My guess would be dialects that are mutually intelligible to varying degrees.
