It seems impossible not to connect the crash to Trump taking a machete to just about all federal workers, but in transcripts between the helicopter tower the plane had been given right of way and the copter was told to go around. The copter voiced visual on the plane but didn't veer off the intercept path. The tower told it to course correct again, with plenty of time, but it didn't apparently. From what I've seen it seems like the fault lies mostly with the helicopter pilot.

It really bugs me, that they use terms like "intellectual disablities", when Elon barely has high BSc and Trump was admitted to university by, you know, his father power and influence (and through a backdoor). I also imagine Trump supporters to be largely uneducated and intimitated by people who really have university level education.

So, you wanna know why aviation safety has been so good? One reason is because the people responsible for funding the FAA and NTSB (Congress) are among the largest users of aviation, flying back and forth between their homes and DC all the time. This has been true since the dawn of commercial aviation. Congress people DO NOT LIKE planes falling out of the sky because they don't fancy personally dying in a giant fireball. Expect all funding and staffing issues to be quickly solved :)

The only reason Regan National still exists is because Congress doesn't want to drive all the way out to Dulles for a flight. They have repeatedly blocked Regan National from shutting down. Regan is a stupidly dangerous and crowded airport in crowded and dangerous airspace.

Even if the tower would have been fully staffed, the helicopter pilot was on visual separation rules and messed up. I highly suspect that the helicopter also had several flight support systems deactivated, like collision avoidance, due to it being reported as a training/practice flight.
Allowing visual separation at all in aviation, especially in dense air space, is in my opinion one of the root causes of this disaster. And also not holding military aircraft to the same standards as civilian.

Those helicopters may not have collision avoidance (TCAS) but in any case that system is typically muted at low altitude around airports due to the constant stream of false positives from nearby normal traffic. While the available facts of the collision seem to point to the helicopter flying higher than directed and failing to identify and avoid the CRJ, we won't know for a while. Well, other than DEI had nothing to do with it.

One man was controlling plane and helicopter traffic at the same time, while trying to do the work of two people. It is a challenging job to begin with, and that is too much to ask of one person and not expect mistakes.

There have been a lot of near-miss incidents in the last couple years where ATC lapses were a primary cause. A bunch of runway incursions last year for example. It's almost an impossible job to do perfectly all the time, but it's now possibly the weakest link in aviation safety with the cuts to staffing and the growth of aviation in general. No doubt there will be those who call for just automating the whole thing with "AI".

There has been a surge of ATC mental health issues and ATC organizations are at least dog-whistling about managing "the crisis". Determining longitudinal suicide risks because of profession is not easy. Working in transport in general is high stress, you can see this metastudy shows there are transport jobs with a higher suicide risk than even ATCs: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10546617/#sec1-3. I've long heard that agriculture is the sector with the highest suicide risk though.

To be fair, ignoring the sky-boss, which is what ATC *is*, generally would be read as 'attitude' and had he not crashed probably would have gotten his butt chewed by his CO once he was back on the ground. It's always possible though that there was some kind of radio failure and it wasn't an actual attitude, won't know for sure till they rebuild the helo and the plane and figure out what actually went down.

The audio from last night going around on here didnt have their response on it. They probably saw the plane further behind I guess? The CRJ was close, and being on approach its prob still descending so guessing the chopper pilot didnt notice it above them. An investigation should have accurate elevation info but sadly its prob not possible to know what pat 25 was thinking he requested vis sep from.
