Can more than one pair tango at the same time? I only ever see one pair dancing at a time while surrounded by watchers. What happens when multiple tangos are going on?
Performances are done one couple at a time, usually there is a whole room full of people dancing in circles. Usually there are concentric rings that get faster as you move towards the center of the room. Sometimes there is little more than standing room, so navigating and dancing in tight quarters as the room moves is quite normal.
Tango for show danced by pros tends to be just one couple because all the attention is on them.
The "normal" setting would be a tango bar, or a place in a park where people gather to dance with fixed partners or with strangers. It's also a lot less complex.
Both are great tho, and I hate the gatekeepers that say this is not tango, often without even being argentinian themselves. As one myself, I'm glad it is being adopted and refined, because that's how culture survives.

But those handful of steps (starting @ 1:43 left, or about 40 seconds in) where she's holding her pose with all of her weight on the one spike which he does a little strut made me feel pain for the floor

If you look at salsa, rumba or other rhythm dances, a lot of dance "steps" don't actually involve taking your feet off the floor, but sliding one foot with no weight on it across the floor while your weight rests on the other foot. Hence, smooth bottoms on shoes and polished/waxed hardwood. Sometimes you'll see rubber, but if it's too sticky/catchy, you'll trip
of course you can fathom it! isn't there something you can do really good because you've been practicing for years? like a fun hobby, or maybe something for your career? for ger, it's dancing, but for you I'm sure it's something :) and you'd be okay doing it in front of your community (pretty sure she's dancing in front of other dancers)
I did dance as a young fella and audiences, whether they be other dancers or not, never influenced me. I hasten to add that I have always been a solitary person. You've practised your routine countless times and if you lose the plot your partner will give you a nudge that brings you back on point. Interestingly, I think he loses his position in the last 5-7 seconds and has to "jump' into the final stance.
My expiration, just started dancing 2 years ago, is that the best group are very supportive of all levels of skill. I've watched nationally ranked dancers dance with someone on thier first night. Its about supporting each other to get better.
It helps to be very good. These two are very good. But even so, most dancers will enjoy that others are out there dancing at any skill level. It's generally a very supportive community.
Sounds like being at karate events with my nephews. It doesn't matter what the skill level of the person they're interacting with is, the enthusiasm of support is always 110%
One thing I both love and hate about tango is the Cabeceo. It is great because it removes the nerves of having to walk up to someone and asking them to dance, however, it does force you to make eye contact with people which is not always easy for everyone. But to me it makes it easier to get dances as a nervous/shy person.
Though, once you get the Cabeceo down, you will find it is super useful for getting waiters attention without having to make any noise at restaurants.
There will always be the odd outlier in any community who sees everything as a contest, but those folk are dickbags whose judgmental opinions don't matter. The vast majority are, as you say, supportive and glad to see others enjoying their interest.
My daughter is almost 2, and she has been pulling me away from what I'm doing to dance with her. Even if she didn't have the amazing rhythm that she does, we would be smiling and laughing just as much. I love dancing in general, but dancing with her is simply magical.
