Gonna have to disagree. As a Brit, many of our worst travel regularly to places like Spain and The Netherlands while plenty of good, generous and kind hearted people can't afford to see the world or are too busy helping vulnerable people that they aren't able to. You can stay put and be an empathetic person just as you can travel and hate. How many countries do Billionaires visit? More than your average volunteer I guarantee.

Wonderful sentiment, but in practice, not so much. I have a friend whose parents travel to a new country several times a year. They are currently in Guatemala. But then they'll come home, put on their maga hats, and bemoan "the illegals" here.

Yeah some people are like that. My parents are racist, dad more than mom, and I was raised to be racist and my first boyfriend was a national socialist (nazi, if you will) and got me into all of that. Traveling and meeting new people both irl and online helped me change my mind. Just because some people are lost causes, doesn't mean that everybody is.

Yeah, I'm from a small town, and when I was a kid there were only white people here. I think the first black person moved here when I was around 16 years old, so 20 years ago. Before that the most exotic people in town were these Turkish people that were, and still are, running a pizza&kebab place. Now we have more diversity, but not much tbh. And tbh most of the diversity is just people from other European countries..

Yup. I was far right when I was younger and then I started traveling and ended up kind of accidentally moving to another country for almost 2 years in total. This + making new friends from all over Europe due to World of Warcraft slowly made me change sides. I do know of people that have traveled and they've spent a lot of time in other countries and they're still racist, but there's hope for some. This is why I think that the best kind of a nazi is an ex nazi who changed their mind.

TBH, travelling in Europe is cheap, if you plan ahead and/or use busses like Flixbus. It is the hotels/airbnb that are expensive. Even the hostels are very expensive in some cities like Barcelona. And you get your stuff stolen.

I hate that viewpoint. It goes literally counter to every single lesson we need to teach. Even a *baby step* towards tolerance *is still a baby step*. You should *celebrate that baby step.* Reward people for doing the right thing, don't punish them because they haven't done enough of the right thing. This is basic fucking human psychology. If you reward good behavior, they will start behaving well. If you punish a lack of good behavior, they will start faking it well.

I grew up on Long Island and though I wouldn't have said as much, I was pretty damn homophobic when I graduated High School. The president of the 'Nerd Club' in my first college saw that and allowed me to go with the club to a nearby Convention (on the school's dime) but made an out homosexual guy my roommate.
I like to think that was part of what helped me to see him as just a guy. I think on that president often, that he saw what I needed and taught the lesson subtly.

There are lots of bubbles. For me the university was more of a bubble than anything else. Sure there were more people from different countries, but almost everyone was smart and somewhat sane. Usually from a family of at least one decent parent. Also everyone seems to have one or more of ADD/ADHD/autism and are nerds of some sort, but that's probably just my own smaller bubble inside the university life.

Genuinely the amount of times I’ve heard people say ‘college made my kids views shift away from mine’ in my home town is kind of depressing. A lot of them joke about it claiming that their kids views will change with age. That college poisoned their minds. It’s really sad. Depends on the kind of economics. Billionaires have poured a lot of money into funding major business schools and university economic departments -- on the condition that they teach right-wing economics, like austerity and trickle down. People who study actual scientifically-valid economics tend to be more centrist or even progressive, since those are the theories that actually work, but that's sadly the minority.
